The post Who are the world精东影业 largest aircraft engine manufacturers? appeared first on 精东影业.]]>
Normally when making a purchase decision, one would always look at the best, or at least one of the best, market options available. The same logic applies in the aviation industry when aircraft精东影业 airframe builders are looking for the right engine or powerplant assembly for their aircraft.

Considering that the engine is the primary source of power and thrust for an aircraft, its optimal performance is highly desirable. Equally, the efficiency of an aircraft relies on its engine characteristics. From one aircraft manufacturer to the next, the performance requirements for aircraft types and models differ, hence the difference in engine requirements.

However, despite these variances, most aviation stakeholders agree that there are more notable, 鈥榮uperior鈥 players than others in the business of aircraft engine manufacturing and they include Pratt & Whitney, General Electric, Rolls-Royce, and CFM International.

精东影业 takes a closer look at some of the world精东影业 largest commercial aircraft engine manufacturers, and answers the question: who is the largest?

Pratt & Whitney

Pratt & Whitney, commonly referred to as P&W or PW, is an American aviation company with headquarters in East Hartford, Connecticut, United States (US). Having been founded in 1925, P&W is one of the big three commercial aviation engine manufacturers, competing with General Electric and Rolls-Royce in gas turbine engine manufacture.

Today, at least have been installed by P&W. Even more, P&W engines power globally. Some of the notable commercial aircraft powered by these engines include the A220, A320, A330, Embraer E-jet family, Boeing 767, De Havilland Canada (DHC-8) Classics, and Q400 series among others.

One of the company精东影业 popular models is the GFT engine, which is the industry精东影业 only commercially available modern geared propulsion system today. The GFT engine is lightweight compared to other similar engines, it has various technological and aerodynamic advancements. Some of the other major engine models include the V2500, GP7200, JT8D, JT9D, PW2000, PW6000, and PW4000 families.

Over the years, P&W has partnered with other multinational companies forming two main joint ventures namely the Engine Alliance and International Aero Engines. The Engine Alliance incorporates P&W and General Electric in manufacturing the GP7200 engines. On the other hand, International Aero Engines is a joint venture between P&W, MTU Aero Engines, and Japanese Aero Engine Corporation, manufacturing the V2500 engines.

General Electric

General Electric, commonly known as GE, is another of the world精东影业 largest commercial engine manufacturers. Its headquarters is in Cincinnati, Ohio, US, and the company was founded in 1892.

GE supplies engines to the world精东影业 leading aircraft manufacturers, including Airbus, Boeing, De Havilland Canada, Embraer, and COMAC. Some of the aircraft types powered by GE engines include the Boeing 737, 777, 747, 787, A320, A330, and A340, plus all the aircraft powered by engines from joint ventures of the company. For example, the previously mentioned joint venture between GE and P&W, the Engine Alliance, manufactures the GP7200 engines.

Another successful partnership, CFM International, was forged between GE and French engine manufacturer Safran.

Some of the popular GE engine models include the GENX, GE90, GE9X, HF-120, PASSPORT, and CFM56. When considered independently, GE services about 16% of the market. However, when considered jointly with CFM, the company精东影业 , which is the world精东影业 largest.聽聽聽

CFM International

CFM International is a joint venture between GE and Safran. Founded in 1974, and with its headquarters in Cincinnati, Ohio, the US, the main purpose of this partnership was to support and build the CFM56 engine, a high-bypass turbofan engine. This was a combined project between Safran精东影业, formerly Snecma, M56, and GE精东影业 CF6 engines.

To a large extent, the engine powers the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 families. CFM International also manufactures LEAP engines, which make use of newer technologies that result in innovative, cost-effective, and fuel-efficient engines. Similar to the CFM56, LEAP engines extensively power the A320 and 737 aircraft families.

As previously mentioned, CFM and GE control the largest market share of commercial aircraft engine manufacturers at 55%. Of this, , which makes it the largest commercial aircraft engine manufacturer in the world.

Rolls-Royce

Rolls-Royce is one of the most successful engineering companies globally. Founded in 1906, the company has its headquarters in London, England, United Kingdom. Its first successful production of an aircraft engine was in 1914 when it made a piston engine, known as the Eagle, primarily used to power many aircraft during the Second World War.

Today, Rolls-Royce is one of the world精东影业 largest commercial aircraft engine manufacturers and is popularly known for the Trent XWB, 7000, 1000, 900,800, and 500 engines. The Trent engine family has been used to power a wide range of aircraft including the Boeing 777, 787, Airbus A330, A340, A350, and A380 among others.鈥

Further, the company精东影业 Trent engine family has recorded with . Rolls-Royce controls about 18% of the engine market share globally.

In conclusion: who are the world精东影业 largest aircraft engine manufacturers?

Undoubtedly, when considered together with their joint ventures, General Electric, Pratt & Whitney, CFM International, and Rolls-Royce control the largest share of the world精东影业 aircraft engine market at a combined percentage of around 98%. This means that the three big players enjoy economies of scale such as holding the highest bargaining power of the suppliers of aircraft engines to the market. This leaves just 2% of the market share to the other market players.聽聽

However, the data should not deter newer market entrants since the aviation industry still encourages innovations that enhance reliability, efficiency, and sustainability.

Portugal is initiating the sale of its national airline, TAP Air Portugal, for the second time in a decade. The Portuguese government aims to divest a minimum of 51% of the airline’s shares to an investor while allocating 5% to the company’s employees.

Fernando Medina, the country’s Minister of Finance, the 51% stake is the initial target, with the possibility of selling a higher percentage, potentially up to 100%, to be determined later in the process. He was quoted by local media as saying, “The exact percentage will be determined in subsequent stages.”

The government’s objective in this sale is to facilitate the growth of TAP Air Portugal, its Lisbon hub, investment, and employment within the aviation sector. This move also aims to foster the expansion of point-to-point national airport operations and influence the company’s share price.

Portugal’s Minister of Infrastructure, Jo茫o Galamba, mentioned that TAP’s performance has exceeded the expectations outlined in its restructuring plan. He stated, “TAP is experiencing a positive phase, with results far surpassing our previous forecasts. We anticipate even better results in 2023.”

During the first half of 2023, TAP reported robust performance in its crucial long-haul markets and achieved a record net income of 鈧23 million ($25.1 million). This marks a significant improvement from the previous year when the airline reported a net loss of 鈧202.1 million ($220.7 million).

TAP Air Portugal has garnered the interest of three major European airline groups: Air France-KLM, Lufthansa, and the International Airlines Group (IAG), which is the parent company of British Airways. TAP Air Portugal holds a substantial and profitable presence in various African and transatlantic markets, particularly in Brazil.

This marks the second privatization of the Portuguese flag carrier TAP Air Portugal within a decade. In 2015, a consortium of private investors led by American airline entrepreneur David Neeleman acquired a 45% stake in TAP Air Portugal, gaining effective control of the airline’s management.

However, in July 2020, TAP returned to majority public ownership when Neeleman sold his 22.5% stake back to the government. This transaction followed a 鈧1.35 billion government rescue package prompted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The new privatization process is anticipated to conclude in 2024.

Saudi Arabian Airlines (SAUDIA), the national flag carrier of Saudi Arabia, has introduced its fresh brand identity, which includes a new logo, aircraft livery, and cabin crew uniforms.

This rebranding initiative, extending to all of SAUDIA’s products and services, heralds the dawn of a “new era for SAUDIA,” as stated in an official issued on September 30, 2023.

The new brand color identity, characterized by shades of green, blue, and sand, symbolizes Saudia’s ambitions to expand its fleet and destinations, thus fostering global connectivity with Saudi Arabia. In addition to the visual facets, the airline is introducing a novel fragrance and sonic identity, along with a locally inspired cuisine as part of its in-flight service.

See what SAUDIA’s livery looked like before in this gallery:

Simultaneously, SAUDIA has embarked on a digital transformation journey. By year’s end, the airline aspires to fully deploy its generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) virtual assistant, which will cater to all informational and travel-related requirements of its passengers.

SAUDIA精东影业 new aircraft livery

The airline’s revamped aircraft livery boasts white, green, and blue lines that, according to the carrier, embody progress and transformation. It also introduces a redesigned tail, now adorned in green and featuring the new logo, with the word “Saudia” adorning the aircraft fuselage’s lower section.

The airline’s previous livery featured a solitary golden stripe on a white fuselage, with a dark blue tail housing its former gold-colored logo.

The fresh design bears resemblance to the airline’s retro livery, which was unveiled on a Boeing 777-300ER to commemorate its 75th anniversary back in September 2021. Nevertheless, discernible distinctions exist, including a significantly darker green hue on the tail and the inclusion of green paint on the engine pod鈥攁 characteristic absent in the retro livery.

The rebranding initiative extends to new uniforms for both cabin crew and ground staff. The fresh cabin crew uniforms incorporate a color palette consisting of shades and hues of purple, beige, gold, and royal blue. The airline initiated the uniform rollout on its Paris Charles de Gaulle and London Heathrow routes in February 2020.

The post Blue Origin to fly 鈥渟oon鈥 as New Shepard 23 mishap investigation concludes appeared first on 精东影业.]]>
After a year-long hiatus of flights while US authorities investigated the New Shepard 23rd launch mishap, Blue Origin now plans to relaunch flights “soon” as the investigation has concluded.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced the closure of the Blue Origin in a statement on September 27, 2023.

The FAA reported that there were “multiple root causes” behind the mishap that occurred on September 12, 2022. In its statement, the authority explicitly identified the structural failure of an engine nozzle caused by higher-than-expected engine operating temperatures as the immediate cause of the New Shepard mishap.

The FAA has emphasized that the investigation’s closure does not signal the resumption of New Shepard launches. Nevertheless, it appears that the space company has different plans and is eager to resume flights sooner rather than later. In response to the news about the investigation’s closure, Blue Origin issued a brief statement on X (formerly Twitter), saying: “We’ve received the FAA’s letter and plan to fly soon.” However, it did not provide further clarification regarding the timeline.

A clearer indication of when the space company could potentially resume its flights was provided by the FAA. Although it refrained from specifying a timeline, the authority stated that Blue Origin could relaunch New Shepard once it implements all corrective actions that impact public safety and receives a license modification from the FAA that addresses all safety and other applicable regulatory requirements.

The FAA has outlined a list of 21 corrective actions for Blue Origin to implement in order to prevent a recurrence of mishaps. These actions include, for example, redesigning engine and nozzle components to improve structural performance during operation, as well as making organizational changes, according to the statement.

What happened to New Shepard on September 12, 2022?

Blue Origin’s New Shepard 23rd official launch ended dramatically when a rocket booster exploded shortly after liftoff on September 12, 2022. During the mission, the rocket was carrying a payload of scientific experiments, including a fluorescence imaging system to study how plants respond to a trip to space.

Following the mishap, the company claimed that the capsule escape system worked as intended, and the passenger compartment separated successfully, safely bringing the payload back to the ground.

No injuries were reported during the incident, and there was no damage to public property.

Now, the FAA has found that:

“During the mishap, the onboard launch vehicle systems detected the anomaly, triggered an abort and separation of the capsule from the propulsion module as intended, and shut down the engine. The capsule landed safely, and the propulsion module was destroyed upon impact with the ground. All debris landed within the designated hazard area.”

The FAA oversaw the Blue Origin-led investigation and granted NASA and the National Transportation Safety Board official observer status.

The investigation report has not been released to the public due to containing proprietary data and U.S. Export Control information, as explained by the FAA.

New Shepard is a suborbital rocket designed to carry a capsule to an altitude of more than 100 kilometers (62 miles). Its first crewed flight occurred in July 2021, with Jeff Bezos and several other space tourists on board.”

The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has canceled an airworthiness directive (AD) affecting Airbus A321 passenger-to-freighter (P2F) aircraft after discovering a calculation error on which the AD was based.

After the agency issued an airworthiness directive introducing stricter fuselage inspections for Airbus A321 P2F operators, it was subsequently found that the formula used to calculate the compliance timeframe in the directive was incorrect.

A further assessment, prompted by these observations and conducted by Elbe Flugzeugwerke and Airbus, confirmed that the additional stress on modified aircraft resulted in only a minimal reduction in the compliance timeframe when compared to the requirements outlined in the AD. Therefore, the potential safety concern for affected A321 aircraft had already been adequately addressed by a previous airworthiness directive issued on December 7, 2022.

What did the Airbus A321 P2F airworthiness directive say?

EASA introduced stricter fuselage inspections for the Airbus A321 P2F in the now-canceled Airworthiness Directive (AD) issued on September 12, 2023.

Back then, as part of the A321 XLR certification process and the alignment of fatigue and damage tolerance across the Airbus Single Aisle family, a new stress calculation was completed for the Center Wing Box (CWB) and slanted junction areas at fuselage frame 42.

The results of these stress analyses revealed elevated fatigue stress levels in these specific regions, which could potentially lead to the development of cracks under the current inspection procedures. Failure to detect and address this condition would have the potential to compromise the structural integrity of the fuselage.

At the time, EASA warned operators that if left unaddressed, this condition could affect the structural integrity of the Airbus A321ceo aircraft and, by extension, the A321 P2F.

In response to this situation, EASA issued an airworthiness directive mandating a one-time inspection of the affected aircraft parts and, based on the inspection results, the implementation of necessary corrective measures. Additionally, the directive included provisions for a single ferry flight.

What is the A321 P2F, and how many are there?

The A320/A321 P2F conversion program was as a joint venture between ST Engineering, Airbus, and Elbe Flugzeugwerke. In this partnership, Airbus, as the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM), provides technical data, certification support, develops on-board computers, manages airframe engineering, and offers expertise in flight physics and flight testing. Elbe Flugzeugwerke, as the Supplemental Type Certificate holder, was appointed to lead the overall program and commercialization.

There is a total of 25 Airbus A321 P2Fs currently in service, flying cargo with 13 different airlines, according to data from ch-aviation.com. This number includes three aircraft that are currently in storage and three more that are undergoing maintenance.

Airports Council International (ACI) World Director General Luis Felipe de Oliveira spoke with 精东影业 on the sidelines of the World Aviation Festival following the presentation of the latest global passenger traffic figures for 2023 and the outlook for 2024.

The main takeaway is that the air travel industry is about to leave behind the dramatic shock that represented the COVID-19 pandemic.

A report published by ACI on September 27, 2023, revealed that global passenger traffic is expected to reach 8.6 billion passengers, equivalent to 94.2% of the 2019 levels by the end of 2023. This figure is projected to increase to 9.4 billion in 2024, surpassing 2019 traffic levels.

ACI estimates that aviation will double in size by 2041. However, to reach this growth, there are a number of challenges that the industry faces. 鈥淔irst one, of course, is the sustainable aspects of the industry,鈥 de Oliveira told 精东影业. “How will we finance these investments in terms of capacity, sustainability, sustainable aviation fuels, and, of course, innovation? These are the main issues we face in the future.”

ACI is a global organization of airports, representing approximately 2,000 members worldwide, which accounts for roughly 95% of global air traffic. The organization’s primary focus is to collaborate with ICAO and other international organizations to enhance the air transport system.
