Avelo Airlines will launch its new nonstop service in autumn 2024 connecting Salt Lake City-Bay Area, Utah, to Sonoma County, California.  

The new route will operate twice a week starting from October 24, 2024. The flights will be operated by Boeing Next-Generation 737 aircraft. 

The service will link the Bay Area精东影业 Charles M. Schulz Sonoma County Airport (STS) with Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC). Currently Avelo is the only airline to offer direct flights between SLC and STS.  

鈥淲e look forward to inspiring travel this fall to Sonoma County and inspiring Northern Californians to explore all the Beehive State has to offer,鈥 Andrew Levy, Avelo Airlines Founder and CEO, said in a press release. 

鈥淭his new nonstop service to the Bay Area/Sonoma County is a plus for our passengers,鈥 added Bill Wyatt, Salt Lake City Department of Airports Executive Director. 鈥淭he additional gates the airport built as part of The New SLC has made this new service possible.鈥  

Since its inaugural flight on April 28, 2021, Avelo Airlines has transported more than five million passengers on more than 40,000 flights. The carrier currently operates flights to 54 locations in the United States and Caribbean, as well as two foreign countries 鈥 Jamaica and Mexico.

As US-based Avelo Airlines approaches the third anniversary of its first flight, the company has announced that it completed 2023 with strong year-over-year revenue growth and its first-ever profitable quarter. For the full year 2023, Avelo improved its pretax margin by 15 percentage points compared to 2022. 

In 2023, Avelo flew 2.3 million passengers, generating $265 million in revenue, an increase of 74% over 2022. Additionally, Avelo concluded 2023 with a pre-tax fully allocated profit for its fourth quarter 鈥 the first since it started flying in 2021. Specific figures have not been disclosed by the airline.  

Avelo also said that in its brief existence, the carrier has also established the lowest cost structure of any US airline. In Q3 2023, Avelo reported a 6.9 cents stage length-adjusted Cost per Average Seat Mile (CASM) excluding fuel 鈥 the lowest in the US airline industry. This improved further in Q4 2023 to 6.6 cents. Avelo achieved this unit cost outcome despite relatively low aircraft utilization of eight hours per day or less.听

鈥淎velo achieved this profitable outcome 鈥 unadjusted and free of special items 鈥 despite a high fuel price in the period on the back of a strong demand environment and a low non-fuel cost structure that continues to improve, said Avelo Airlines Chief Financial Officer Hunter Keay.  

鈥淎velo精东影业 non-fuel unit costs are half of the US airline industry average, and we see this gap widening in 2024. Low costs enable low fares, which is even more important to consumers in the current high-inflation environment,鈥 he added. 

Since taking flight on April 28, 2021, Avelo has flown more than four million passengers on more than 30,000 flights. The carrier currently serves 48 destinations spanning 23 states and Puerto Rico. The airline operates 16 Boeing Next-Generation 737 aircraft (nine 189-seat 737-800s and seven 149-seat 737-700s). The airline expects to take delivery of five additional 737s by the end of 2024.听

The low-cost airline operates from six bases located at Los Angeles鈥 Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR), Southern Connecticut精东影业 Tweed-New Haven Airport (HVN), Orlando International Airport (MCO), the Philadelphia and Delaware Valley region精东影业 Wilmington Airport (ILG), and Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU). On May 1. 2024, the airline is planning on moving its Las Vegas base at Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) to the Bay Area精东影业 Sonoma County Airport (STS).  

Continuing with the positive news, in January 2024, Avelo was the highest-ranking US airline for on-time performance with 78.81% of all Avelo flights arriving at their destinations within 15 minutes of their scheduled arrival time, according to US Department of Transportation data. The industry average figure among all US carriers in January 2024 was 72.67%. 

Additionally, in January 2024, Avelo achieved the industry精东影业 second-lowest flight cancellation rate of 1.08%, significantly better than the industry average flight cancellation rate in January of 3.51%.听

US low-cost carrier Avelo Airlines has announced the expansion of its network with three new routes in the East Coast area. 

The Houston-based carrier精东影业 three new routes. one to a new city plus two direct services, will begin in May 2024 and operate on Boeing Next-Generation 737 aircraft.

Starting May 10, 2024, Avelo will operate Albany International Airport (ALB) to Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) flights twice weekly, on Mondays and Fridays.

Another route, Manchester-Boston Regional Airport (MHT) to Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport (GSP), will begin on May 10, 2024, also operating twice weekly on Mondays and Fridays. 

And on May 9, 2024, the airline will begin operating a direct route from Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport (ROC) to Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport (GSP).

鈥淲e are excited to celebrate one year of base operations at RDU by adding three more popular routes to our East Coast network. Whether visiting friends and family or enjoying a leisurely vacation, Avelo offers time and money-saving convenience for our Customers,鈥 Avelo Airlines Chairman and CEO Andrew Levy said in a press statement.

Avelo Airlines has also celebrated the one year anniversary of its fifth base, Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) .

Since then, the airline has added a second aircraft and now employs approximately 90 RDU-based crew members, including airport customer service, flight Attendants, pilots, aircraft technical operations and maintenance, and supervisors, with more career opportunities still available.

Since taking flight at RDU, Avelo said it has served more than 230,000 customers and operated more than 1,700 flights.

An Avelo Airlines passenger is facing the possibility of up to 15 years in jail after saying he had placed a bomb under the aircraft he was on.  

Kenneth Lee Szogas, 62, was charged on August 31, 2023, with disorderly conduct and threatening to place a destructive device.听

According to court documents, Szogas arrived at Palm Beach International Airport (PBI) in Florida, United States (US) and while disembarking he told another passenger about the bomb.  

The passenger immediately informed a gate agent and Szogas was promptly arrested by Palm Beach Sheriff精东影业 Office deputy. 

reported that Szogas was transferred to jail later that evening and released on a bond for $26,000.听聽

If convicted, as well as a long prison sentence, Szogas could face a fine of thousands of dollars. 

Although the consequences of a bomb threat while travelling on a plane are well-known, cases of passengers making them are all too common. 

On July 5, 2023, Alaska Airlines Flight 334 from Atlanta to Seattle was diverted to Spokane International Airport (GEG) following a bomb threat made by a passenger on board.   

The passenger, identified as 38-year-old Brandon Scott from Kentucky, was detained upon landing and now faces federal charges.   

And in August 2023, armed police were deployed to Nottingham East Midlands Airport (EMA) in the United Kingdom (UK) after a passenger on a Boeing 737-800 stated he was in possession of an explosive device.听 聽

Aside from low-cost fares, budget carriers around the world seem to have one thing in common and that精东影业 getting resourceful when it comes to in-flight entertainment.

In the absence of modern and high-tech in-flight entertainment systems, low-cost carriers are turning to cabin crew to host parlor games and serenade passengers during flights.

A bemused passenger on an Air Asia flight from Cambodia to Vietnam recently uploaded a video clip capturing their flight attendant crooning an Ed Sheeran song using the aircraft精东影业 interphone system as a microphone.

Ive never been so confused & so happy at once.

鈥淭here was no in-flight entertainment on our flight from Cambodia to Vietnam, so our flight attendant said he鈥檇 perform for us,鈥 the passenger captioned her video.

鈥淚鈥檝e never been so confused and happy all at once,鈥 she added.

Air Asia isn鈥檛 the only carrier to turn to live song performances as its in-flight entertainment. 

A passenger from American ultra low-cost carrier Avelo also uploaded a video clip of a flight attendant singing live to passengers during an evening flight.

The performance seemed to be appreciated and enjoyed, with passengers breaking into applause at the end of the song.

Meanwhile, a flight attendant for Dominican passenger and charter airline Sky Cana also uploaded a video clip of himself singing a song for his passengers before take-off.

Philippine low-cost carrier Cebu Pacific.is known for offering interactive in-flight entertainment such as hosting trivia and parlor games.”

The carrier is also known to partner with local celebrities to host the 鈥渇un鈥 games on board. 

However, not everyone is amused by this type of entertainment. 

鈥淐ebu Pacific should stop those stupid parlor games. It’s just plain silly and causes unnecessary discomfort to other passengers,鈥 one passenger tweeted.

Some are appreciative of the games, especially because the airline provides small prizes to game winners.

Avelo Airlines it will open its sixth base in the United States (US) with a new hub launching in Las Vegas on September 7, 2023.  

The announcement came on June 26, 2023, which revealed that the base will initially serve five nonstop destinations.  

Las Vegas joins Avelo精东影业 five existing bases at Los Angeles鈥 Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR), Orlando International Airport (MCO), Philadelphia / Delaware Valley精东影业 Wilmington Airport (ILG), Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) and Southern Connecticut精东影业 Tweed-New Haven Airport (HVN). 

Avelo stated that the new Las Vegas hub will bring 鈥渁ffordable, convenient and reliable air service to unserved and underserved communities across the country鈥. 

Avelo, which has operated nonstop service between Las Vegas鈥 Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) and Sonoma Airport (STS) since September 2021, will add four new nonstop destinations from LAS.  

These include Redmond Municipal Airport (RDM), Brownsville South Padre Island Airport (BRO), Dubuque Regional Airpor (DBQ) and California Redwood Coast-Humboldt County Airport (ACV).  

Avelo will be the only airline flying nonstop between LAS and these five destinations.

Investing in airlines has traditionally been a rather risky proposition and yet, the aviation industry continues to exert a gravitational pull that many entrepreneurs find hard to resist.

It is remarkable that even during the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic, with fleets grounded across the globe and carriers hemorrhaging cash, there was no shortage of new airline projects taking shape.

During the last couple of years, the US has proven to be a particularly fertile ground for new operators. America may well be a consolidated market as far as air travel is concerned, but startup airlines have been quick to emerge whenever a market segment is perceived to be underserved by the incumbents.

No less than three startup airlines, each ready to challenge the status quo in its own way, have taken to the skies recently in the United States or are preparing to do so in the near future: Breeze Airways, Avelo and Northern Pacific Airways.

But which gap in the market have their founders spotted? And what are their respective value propositions? Let精东影业 take a look.

Breeze Airways

Breeze Airways is the latest project of one of the most prolific and successful entrepreneurs in the international aviation scene.

When it comes to starting new airlines, the track record of David Neeleman, founder of Breeze Airways, is second to none.

Prior to Breeze he had already launched no less than four other carriers in three different countries: Morris Air and JetBlue Airways in the US, WestJet in Canada, and Azul in Brazil. On top of that, Neeleman also temporarily took over and managed TAP Air Portugal and was a minority investor in French carrier Aigle Azur.

If JetBlue and Azul represented a transformational force in their respective markets, Neeleman now aims to do it all over again, just this time in a somewhat different segment.

Rather than face official on its own turf, Breeze airways is bypassing major hubs in order to connect second and third-tier American airports that, until now, had few or no direct air links between them.

To do so, the new airline is using relatively small Airbus A220-300s, configured to seat between 126 and 137 passengers and, temporarily as a stop-gap solution, even smaller Embraer E190s and E195s (sourced from Azul, another airline in Neeleman精东影业 orbit).

This is a similar approach to that followed in Europe by another airline that successfully pioneered this type of inter-regional low fare concept, Barcelona-based Volotea, which started using Boeing 717s to later switch to Airbus A319s.

Breeze seems to be following in the footsteps of JetBlue, which, back at the time of its launch, tweaked the traditional low-cost rule book to introduce what could be described as a hybrid product.

Low fares remain one of the tenets of Breeze, but the new carrier also places the accent on being a 鈥渘ice鈥 carrier. To drive the point home, its three fare classes are named 鈥淣ice鈥, 鈥淣icer鈥 and 鈥淣icest鈥, depending on the bundle of services you purchase.

And, while the 鈥淣icest鈥 product may be comparable to a business class, the more basic tiers also benefit from some of the elements more typically associated with a premium product, such as the ability to change or cancel your ticket free of charge.

Avelo Airlines

Interestingly, free changes and cancellations are also a major selling point for Avelo Airlines, another newcomer.

This ultra low-cost carrier is the latest incarnation of a pre-existent charter operator called Xtra Airways, which has entered the scheduled market after a change of ownership and a thorough rebranding and re-launch.

Avelo, which defines its mission as 鈥渟aving time and money for travellers鈥, operates a fleet of B737NG aircraft (of both the -700 and -800 versions) offering a bare bones product (no food, drink, or inflight entertainment onboard, even if you are willing to pay for it) although you can add some seating and baggage options for a fee.

Curiously, Avelo runs not one, but two parallel networks, one on each coast of the United States, without any of its routes linking them.

Northern Pacific Airways

Northern Pacific Airways, the third of the new airlines we are looking at, aims to replicate in the trans-Pacific market what Icelandair have been doing for decades in the North Atlantic: offer a good value intercontinental travel option, with the additional allure of the opportunity to explore an interesting place along the way.

The founders of Northern Pacific Airways are linked to America精东影业 northernmost state through their prior acquisition of Ravn精东影业 assets. Ravn was Alaska精东影业 largest regional airline when it went bankrupt during the COVID-19 pandemic. After relaunching Ravn and drawing up plans for its future growth as a would-be electric aircraft operator, they started planning the next aviation venture.

If Icelandair has found a viable niche flying people between Europe and America through Keflavik, Northern Pacific Airways wants to link the 鈥淐ontiguous 48鈥 to East Asia by way of Alaska.

The parallels don鈥檛 end there. Northern Pacific has also selected the Boeing 757, which for decades was Icelandair精东影业 workhorse, as its aircraft of choice. This is certainly not a state-of-the-art aircraft, but the combination of availability at a reasonable cost, capacity and proven reliability is expected to do the trick.

The Alaskan link is a key element of this project and the necessary stopover in Anchorage (ANC) is seen as a commercial opportunity and an element of differentiation, rather than an encumbrance. Northern Pacific plans to offer, in cooperation with the Alaskan tourism industry, a number of products specifically designed to help passengers explore and enjoy this huge Arctic state during their stopovers.

The idea sounds straightforward enough, yet its implementation hasn鈥檛 all been plain sailing.

Northern Pacific Airways unveiled its first aircraft in January 2022, but the launch of regular services has been repeatedly delayed because COVID-related travel restrictions in the target markets of Japan and South Korea have been lingering until quite late this year. As a result, Northern Pacific精东影业 managers started to look for alternative ways to deploy their aircraft. A proposed service to Mexico from Ontario, California, hasn鈥檛 materialized and the airline精东影业 management have subsequently been scouting for opportunities elsewhere.

In October one of Northern Pacific精东影业 Boeing 757s stopped in Saipan, in the Northern Marianas, on its way to Alaska. The purpose of this trip was to pitch the possibility of part of Northern Pacific精东影业 fleet being based in this US territory in the Pacific and acting as the archipelago精东影业 home carrier under a wet lease agreement.

During a recent phone call, Northern Pacific精东影业 CEO, Rob McKinney confirmed that if this arrangement finally goes ahead, the airline will most likely deploy a couple of airplanes to Saipan, with the remainder being allocated to the Alaskan operation, as originally planned.

Regardless of its name, this would make this startup a truly pan-Pacific airline.

A shortage of pilots in the US has led to airlines cutting schedules and having to boost pay and bonuses to staff their operations. 精东影业 investigates what led to the current situation. 

The pilot shortage in the United States started making itself felt in the second half of 2021 as carriers ramped up operations to take advantage of returning travel demand after the COVID-19 pandemic. 

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) expects the North America region to recover more quickly than other regions of the world. It forecast on that passenger numbers will reach 94% of 2019 levels in 2022, with full recovery expected in 2023.

鈥淎fter a resilient 2021, traffic to/from/within North America will continue to perform strongly in 2022 as the US domestic market returns to pre-crisis trends, and with ongoing improvements in international travel,鈥 IATA predicted. 

However, while people want to travel, airlines in North America are struggling to keep pace. Bad weather and staffing shortages led to thousands of flight cancellations over the busy Christmas period and major carriers have announced cuts to flight schedules for this year. 

A real battle is now on to hire pilots, with airlines announcing more incentives and higher pay to tempt employees, while others are announcing partnerships with flight schools or even operating their own schools. 

Did being a pilot lose its glamour? 

The roots of the current situation lie as far as back as 9/11, explained Maximilian Buerger, managing director of AFM.Aero, a market intelligence platform and advisory firm for the pilot training industry. 

The US travel industry slumped after the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center in New York in 2001. Then came the global financial crisis just a few years later, in 2007/2008. Many airlines nearly collapsed and consolidation followed. That led to major cost cuts, including to pilot salaries, with first officer pay sometimes being at minimum wage levels. 

Finally, the Colgan Air crash of 2009 led to a requirement that pilots must accrue 1,500 hours before they can fly for the commercial carriers in the United States. 

All of those factors combined to reduce the lure of the job, Buerger said. 

鈥淭he pilot profession is just not seen to be as attractive in the US as it is in other regions.,鈥 Buerger said. 鈥淵ou have to spend a lot of money on training, you start on a lower salary than in other sectors such as banking or IT, and then you can鈥檛 even get to the airlines for two years because you have to build your hours.鈥  

Buerger added the pandemic has damaged the image of being a pilot further.  鈥淭here’s instability, what if there is another wave? You might lose your job again.鈥

Added to those factors, the pandemic has meant that airlines have used early retirements as a way to cut costs quickly during the downturn, while schools have halted training programs, leaving a gap at entry-level .  

United Airlines chief executive Scott Kirby commented published on January 27, 2022 that he doesn鈥檛 believe the pilot shortage is a function of pay, but rather the time and expense involved in training. 

鈥淎t United, we鈥檙e convinced that the root of the problem is that it costs over $100,000 and takes five or more years to obtain all the training to become eligible to fly for a major airline,鈥 Kirby wrote. 鈥淎 commercial pilot精东影业 journey is technically complex, building hours and obtaining certificates in a process that is difficult to navigate without experienced support.鈥

What actions are US airlines taking?

The current shortage of pilots is being felt most keenly at the regional carriers. Pilots usually begin their careers at the regional airlines and then move on to the more prestigious mainline carriers.

While regional carriers usually plan for this movement, the early retirements at major carriers during the pandemic, plus the faster than expected recovery, means that airlines like Skywest are losing their captains to the majors much more quickly than expected. 

鈥淪o while our pipeline for new pilots is strong, we expect that upgrade timing creates an imbalance and production constraint for the next year or so,鈥 SkyWest (SKYW) chief executive Chip Childs said on a fourth-quarter results call on February 3, 2022.  

SkyWest (SKYW) has therefore reduced schedules and implemented upgrade and retention incentives to attract and retain staff. The scheduling challenges and increased labor costs will also constrain its ability to make profit this year. 

鈥淚n summary, 2022 looks to be the next phase of our COVID recovery and while demand for our product has never been stronger, the current staffing imbalance and ongoing refleeting doesn’t allow us to monetize that demand in the short-term,鈥 Childs added. 

Low cost carriers Avelo and Breeze are raising pay, as is Delta Airlines (DAL). Regional carrier all pilots a $110,000 retention bonus if they stay for a certain time, while new-hire bonuses will temporarily increase from $20,000 to $40,000.

Breeze also has a different solution. It is accepting , under the E3 visa scheme between the United States and Australia. 

Meanwhile, United Airlines boasts that it is the only major US airline to own and operate its own flight school. It opened the doors to its Aviate Academy in Goodyear, Arizona in February 2022. CEO Kirby estimates United will hire 10,000 new pilots by 2030. The airline has a goal to train about 5,000 new pilots at the school by 2030, with at least half being women or people of color. United also teamed up with JP Morgan to offer $2.4 million in scholarships in 2021.

Alaska Airlines and regional partner Horizon Air said on March 9, 2022 that they were teaming up with Hillsboro Aero Academy to launch the development program for aspiring pilots.

The two airlines said they plan to register and train up to 250 students a year and that the cadet pilots will be eligible for financial aid, a $25,000 stipend and a conditional job offer at Horizon, with the prospect to join Alaska later.

鈥淭he program is part of a larger effort to address a growing pilot shortage coupled with increased travel demand,鈥 the airlines said in a press release.  

Will the pilot shortage be repeated elsewhere?

Boeing highlighted in its that the recovery across the world will be uneven with pilot shortages in some regions. It downgraded the number of pilots needing to be hired over the next 20 years to 612,000 worldwide from a previous prediction of 763,000 made in 2020.

Of the 612,000 pilot hires, North America accounts for the biggest chunk at 130,000. Boeing said the pandemic has led to pilot training programs being suspended, junior pilots losing their jobs and more experienced pilots taking early retirement. It said operators will need to plan ahead to make sure they have enough pilots to fly their routes. 

鈥淲ith the dual impact of a smaller qualified pilot pool and accelerated retirements, it is expected that regional pilot shortages and strong competition for qualified pilots will re-emerge within the next few years,鈥 Boeing predicted. 

AFM.Aero精东影业 Buerger says globally we could end up in a situation similar to 2018/2019, when airlines hungry for pilots were snapping up flight instructors from flight schools, leaving the schools unable to train enough new pilots to meet demand. Airlines will most likely also start stepping in to finance cadet programs after a long gap.

鈥淚 predict that 2023 will be the year of the cadet program. As long as airlines can offer a job at the end of training, schools can use that to set up financing programs.鈥

鈥淭his industry follows quite a pronounced boom and bust cycle,鈥 concludes Buerger. 鈥淲e just had the biggest bust in the history of this industry and the effects of it could lead to the biggest boom the pilot training industry has ever experienced.”

US-based start-up carrier Avelo Airlines has raised an additional $42 million in Series B funding, increasing its total capital base to over $160 million.  

In a statement, Avelo Founder, Chairman and CEO Andrew Levy announced: ”This additional capital significantly bolsters our already strong balance sheet and enables the acceleration of Avelo’s growth trajectory in 2022 and beyond.” 

Avelo disclosed that the airline精东影业 largest shareholder, Morgan Stanley Tactical Value (MSTV), invested more than $30 million in a fresh offering.  

“The Morgan Stanley Tactical Value Investing Team is pleased to partner up once again with Avelo Airlines on their recent capital raise,” said Tom Cahill, Managing Director and Co-Head of MSTV, and an Avelo board member. 

Low-cost start-up Avelo launched its operations in April 2021, with a debut flight from its West Coast base at Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR) to Santa Rosa Airport (STS).  

The airline currently serves 19 destinations across the US using its fleet of six Boeing 737 NG aircraft. In November 2021, the carrier launched its East Coast base at Tweed-New Haven Airport (HVN), which allowed the airline to connect across six destinations in Florida.  

Looking ahead to the future, Avelo plans to expand its fleet by adding nine Boeing 737s by the end of 2022. It also aims to boost its connectivity by doubling its network to at least 40 destinations served across the country.

Counting the last days until its Hollywood debut, the newest US airline Avelo Airlines, will try to conquer the American domestic air travel market starting with the West Coast.

Avelo Airlines plans to launch its debut flight from Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR) to Santa Rosa Airport (STS) on April 28, 2021. It will begin operations with single-class 189-seat Boeing 737-800 aircraft. Currently, the carrier owns three narrow-body Boeing 737-800s. 

鈥淧eople are ready to reconnect with family and friends and explore new places,鈥 said Avelo founder, chairman and CEO Andrew Levy. 鈥淲e’re looking to sell the flights very full, we’re defining full as 80-85%.鈥濃

Before expanding across the country, the American start-up Avelo Airlines will put its focus on everyday leisure flights in the West Coast offering introductory ultra-low-fare tickets starting at $19.

The new airline is planning to begin with 11 non-stop routes taking off from BUR,  vintage-looking airport Avelo Airlines chose to be its first base known for its convenient location.

鈥淟ocals know that BUR is LA精东影业 best airport,鈥 said Levy. 鈥淣o airport is closer to downtown LA, Hollywood, Pasadena and Southern California精东影业 many other attractions than BUR,鈥 Levy explained.
