Singapore Airlines will start the new year flying a VIP (Very Important Panda).

In January 2024, the Singapore flag carrier will take Le Le the giant panda cub back to China onboard a specially arranged B747-400F flight.

Born in August 2021, Le Le is Singapore精东影业 first giant panda cub. His parents, Kai Kai and Jia Jia, are on loan from China under China精东影业 wildlife goodwill gesture known as the 鈥減anda diplomacy鈥.

Under the diplomacy program, host countries receive pandas on a 10-year renewable basis. Kai Kai and Jia Jia will remain in Singapore for five more years.

Two year-old Le Le, however, will return to China because zoologists believe it is in the best interest of the pandas and the conservation program that the animals should eventually return to their natural habitat.

Le Le had his final day in Singapore精东影业 Pavilion Capital Giant Panda Forest at River Wonders on December 13, 2023. He is currently in quarantine until he departs for China on January 16, 2023.

Singapore Airlines is sponsoring Le Le精东影业 homecoming trip to Chengdu, where he will be accompanied by two dedicated keepers and a veterinarian. The cabin精东影业 ambient temperature will be maintained between 15-16 degrees Celsius (50-60 degrees Fahrenheit), consistent with the temperature at the River Wonders Panda Forest where Le Le spent the first two years of his life.

According to a report by Channel News Asia, the B747-400F精东影业 nose door can be opened upwards to accommodate Le Le精东影业 custom-made crate, as well as his travel essentials 鈥 including an in-flight meal of up to 50kg of bamboo, bamboo shoots, fruit, pellets and water.

Le Le精东影业 care team has been conditioning him for the flight using positive reinforcement training, which involves food rewards to encourage him to voluntarily enter the crate and get comfortable being inside.

How do you pass the time on a 14-hour flight? Some of us would take this time to catch up on reading, watching films, and even get a much-needed sleep.

A group of theater actors decided to jazz up the in-flight entertainment by using business class seat amenities to act out a scene from a musical.

鈥楥hicago鈥 is celebrating its 25th year with a world tour, and has just wrapped more than two months of shows in South Korea.

After the cast had flown back to the United States, one of the cast members, Garrett Alan James, uploaded a clip of a mini show performed on the 14-hour flight.

When on a 14hr flight鈥 we Chicago tour folk get a lil goofy鈥 by we, I mean me. I am the next Velma Kelly.

The 12-second video clip shows pans to a business class seat with a partition. While the partition automatically goes down, a mobile phone spotlight shines on James, who hams it up for the camera to the score of 鈥淎ll that Jazz鈥.

The video now has over 1.7 million views, and has garnered positive and encouraging comments.

Many of the comments lamented why their flights were never 鈥渢his fun鈥, while plenty complained that 12 seconds was too short, and demanded to see more.

Based on the aircraft seats and aircraft type, the clip appears to have been shot in the business class cabin of a Korean Air Boeing 747

A Cargolux Boeing 747-400F freighter aircraft sustained significant damages after its right body landing gear bogie detached following an emergency landing.

A bogie is the attaching mechanism used when more than two wheels are attached to a landing gear strut.

The 23-year-old Boeing 747-400, with registration code LX-OCV, was scheduled to operate from Luxembourg Airport (LUX) to Chicago精东影业 O鈥橦are International Airport (ORD) on May 14, 2023.

However, upon takeoff from LUX airport the aircraft was unable to retract its landing gear, Cargolux said in a press .

The decision was made to return to LUX airport. But with the large jet full of fuel for a long-haul flight, the aircraft circled around the area while it dumped fuel in order to reach the maximum landing weight.

The aircraft landed in LUX airport 52 minutes after departure, but not without hiccups.

鈥淥n its landing roll its right body landing gear detached from the aircraft. The aircraft however came to a controlled stop and was attended to by the emergency services,鈥 the carrier confirmed.

Various video footage of the aircraft精东影业 landing have been uploaded to Twitter, and show the landing gear bogie detaching before flying away from the aircraft.

The Luxembourgian flag carrier cargo airline confirmed that no persons on board nor on the ground suffered any injuries.

Following the incident, LUX airport shut the runway, forcing the diversion of several flights.

At 00:53 local time on May 15, 2023, the airport operator said that the runway had reopened and that flights had resumed.

Another landing gear accident

Update: On May 20, 2023, another Cargolux Boeing 747-8F aircraft involved in another landing gear incident.

The aircraft, registered as LX-VCB, was forced to declare an emergency after the crew received an alert that the aircraft精东影业 landing gear had not properly deployed on approach to Luxembourg Findel Airport (LUX).

The Boeing 747-8F was coming into land at LUX during the operation of flight CV5486 from Chicago O鈥橦are International Airport (ORD) on May 20, 2023, when the crew received a notification on the Engine-indicating and crew-alerting system (EICAS) warning that the aircraft精东影业 landing gear had not deployed properly.

鈥淭hey executed a low fly past to confirm that all gears were down. The aircraft landed safely with the emergency services on hand,鈥 Cargolux said in a statement released on May 20, 2023.

Data from Flightradar24.com showed the aircraft was on its final approach at around 11:30 am local time (UTC +2) when the crew decided to abort the landing attempt and circle around LUX in a holding pattern at 3,900 feet. Subsequently, the Cargolux pilots performed the low fly-past in what was likely to have been a chance for Air Traffic Control (ATC) to assess whether the landing gear had been deployed before attempting to land once again at 11:47 am local time (UTC +2).

The crew squawked 7700, the code for a general emergency, just prior to landing at LUX at 11:57 am local time (UTC +2), before successfully landing the Boeing 747-8F at the airport at 12:00 pm local time (UTC +2).

On May 14, 2023, another Cargolux Boeing 747F, a -400F, lost its right-body landing gear bogie after it detached after landing at LUX. Although it had lost its landing gear bogie, the aircraft came to a controlled stop without any injuries onboard or on the ground. The operator of LUX shut down the runway after the incident and resumed operations on May 15, 2023.

NASA精东影业 Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) aircraft has been retired to the Pima Air & Space Museum in Tucson, Arizona following the conclusion of its mission.

The Boeing 747SP 鈥楽OFIA鈥 jetliner, which was modified to carry a reflecting telescope, performed its final flight from NASA精东影业 Armstrong Flight Research Center in Palmdale, California, to Tucson on December 13, 2022, NASA said in a .

The aircraft will eventually be on public display at Pima Air & Space Museum, the statement added.

鈥淭he SOFIA mission has a powerful potential to inspire, from its discoveries about the unknown in our universe, to the engineering achievements that broke new ground, to the international cooperation that made it all possible,鈥 said Paul Hertz, senior advisor for the Science Mission Directorate at NASA.

While NASA精东影业 Boeing 747SP has been retired, Hertz said that SOFIA will continue to engage a diverse new generation of scientists, engineers, and explorers.

A successful eight-year run

Initial development of the SOFIA aircraft began in 1996, with the jet reaching full operational capability in 2014.

Since 2014, SOFIA completed a five-year primary mission in 2019 and concluded a three-year mission extension in 2022, NASA noted in a released in April 2022.

The SOFIA jetliner was equipped with a large door in the fuselage that remained open while the aircraft was in flight. During flight, the reflecting telescope would observe infrared light from the Moon, planets, stars, star-forming regions, and nearby galaxies.

An evaluation made by the National Academies鈥 report that SOFIA精东影业 science productivity did not justify its operating costs. The report found that SOFIA精东影业 capabilities did not significantly overlap with the science priorities that had been identified by the Decadal Survey for the next decade.

Operations for the SOFIA mission concluded on September 30, 2022.

The post In a 747 cockpit with 40-year veteran Captain Cameron Livingstone appeared first on 精东影业.]]>

The iconic Boeing 747 was the first wide-body aircraft in the history of aviation, and the first aircraft to be called a 鈥楯umbo Jet鈥 due to its enormous size.

Built and developed in the United States, the four-engine giant pioneered the development of long-haul travel. Nicknamed 鈥楾he Queen of the Skies鈥, the 747 embarked on its first flight in February 1969, received certification in December of the same year, and officially commenced commercial operations in January 1970.

Sydney-based Australian pilot and 精东影业 contributor Hunter McLeod spoke to veteran pilot, Captain Cameron Livingstone, who shared his longstanding history with the 747.

Livingstone took his first flying lesson in 1978 at Archerfield Australia and went on to complete his commercial pilot精东影业 license (CPL), instructor rating and multi-engine instrument rating (multi-IFR). His initial flight hours were in charter flights before getting his big break in 1983 when he joined regional airline and Qantas subsidiary, Sunstate Airlines, as a first officer on the Embraer.

Over the course of four decades, Livingstone went on to amass more than 26,000 flight hours across a range of aircraft including the Airbus A330 and A380. He also became a Captain on the Boeing 767.

Today, Captain Livingstone is the National Coordinator of the Pilot Assistance Network program (PAN), a volunteer organization jointly funded and supported by Qantas and AIPA (the Australian and International Pilots Association). The organization supports and provides peer support to Qantas pilots, crew members and their families.

However, in all his time flying, Livingstone says: 鈥淚 will always love the 747. I really will. There is no other way to put it. I have spent most of my life on it.鈥

A love affair with the 747

Livingstone began flying the 747 with Qantas and flew on the 100/200/300/400 series and 747SP series aircraft. He went on to become a check trainer on the 747 Classic and 400 series.

He says that, even while there is a noticeable difference in the 鈥渉andling鈥 of the aircraft, the Rolls Royce-powered 200 series was his favorite model to fly.

鈥淚t just felt like putting on an old shoe every time we flew, it was so comfortable.鈥

Cameron Livingston after his last landing and the last Qantas Boe

Livingstone describes all the 747 models as 鈥済reat airplanes鈥, adding that the biggest difference he encountered was on the 747-400, which flew with a flight engineer (FE) in the jump seat.

Older versions, such as the 747 classics, had analog dials in their cockpits, which demanded a higher workload. As a result, 747 cockpits were constructed for three crew members: the captain, co-pilot, and flight engineer.

Flight engineers were responsible for operating the analog configured systems of older aircraft.

Modern airplanes, on the other hand, have only two crew members – the commander and the co-pilot. Advancements in technology, computerization and automation have rapidly digitalized computers on board the aircraft and so what would have been done by the flight engineer in the past is now done by computers and automated systems.

What is the seniority number?

When a pilot is hired by an airline, they are given a seniority number. Airlines operate on a seniority-based system which ranks pilots on a seniority list based on the length of their stay with the airline. Therefore, veteran pilots have a higher seniority position than new pilots.

The number remains with a pilot for the duration of their stay with the airline and can significantly impact their career. This includes influence over where a pilot is based, what aircraft and routes they fly, their monthly schedule, when they can go on vacation, and how soon they can upgrade their pilot ranking.

Captain Livingstone describes the seniority number in one word: 鈥渆verything鈥.

鈥淪o, the day you start, you’re given a number. I think my original number was about 400 and something. So I started round about the high 400s. What that means is, as you progress, you have longevity in the airline, [and] your number will decrease [and] become smaller as people ahead of you retire.鈥

Captain Livingstone emphasizes that a smaller seniority number grants a pilot higher bargaining power.

鈥淚t’s like bidding at an auction, the smaller your number, the more you’ve got in your pocket. So, you’d bid for holidays, you’d bid for type changes, you鈥檇 bid for days off, you’d bid for trips, you’d bid for promotion.鈥

Today, Captain Livingstone精东影业 seniority number is 鈥渆ffectively number four on the long-haul side鈥.

Australia精东影业 last 747 bids farewell with a 鈥榝lying kangaroo鈥

The last Boeing 747-400 passenger jumbo jet, belonging to Qantas and registered VH-OEJ, took off from Sydney in July 2020 for its final flight.

Having taken delivery of its first 747-200 series in August 1971, flight QF7474 in July 2020 marked a close to the five-decade long chapter of the 747精东影业 presence within Qantas精东影业 fleet and within Australia精东影业 aviation sector.

As part of the aircraft精东影业 flight plan, Qantas Boeing 747 drew a kangaroo as a final salute.

Livingstone says: 鈥淲hen the last 747 left Australia they did the kangaroo trail. And I couldn’t bring myself to watch that for a couple of days. I really couldn’t. And when I did, I had tears in my eyes.鈥

Looking back, Livingstone recollects the days he spent flying and the opportunities that came along the way. As he looks forward to his final working years before retirement, he is keen to work with and support the next generation of pilots.

鈥淚 might go back to some ground instructing or something like that, because I really enjoyed being around the young people coming through. And they seem to think that maybe I know something. I don’t think I know much more than they do, but they like to hear the stories anyway.鈥

A Boeing 747 freighter is being prevented from taking off by authorities at Frankfurt-Hahn airport (HHN) in Germany due to sanctions on Russia over the war in Ukraine.

Germany daily Bild reported that the CargoLogicAir UK jumbo, which was at HHN for maintenance, will remain in Germany for an unspecified period of time. CargoLogicAir UK has two B747-400 freighters and is part of the Volga-Dnepr Group.

鈥淏ecause the airline Cargologicair UK and its aircraft are subject to EU sanctions, a take-off ban has been placed on the B747, which was at Frankfurt-Hahn for maintenance,鈥 the daily cited local aviation authorities as saying.

Bild cited the German transport ministry as saying that the airline is owned by Russian citizens and is therefore subject to EU sanctions.

The grounding could bring some useful income for Hahn airport, which is currently insolvent. A spokesman for the insolvency administrators told the paper it can charge parking fees of around 1,200 euros per day for the 747.

In aviation, nothing is more synonymous with 鈥楴orth America鈥 than #AirForceOne. Blockbuster movies have been named after it. Books have been written about it. There is absolutely no doubt that Air Force One is one of the most famous and iconic aircraft in history.

While it精东影业 exciting to explore the aircraft, it精东影业 also important to look back at how presidential aircraft have evolved through the decades. After all, it精东影业 been almost 80 years since the first US presidential flight, and Air Force One has certainly come a long way since then.

As we look forward to 2024, when the new Air Force One (which will reportedly cost more than $5 million) will enter service, 精东影业 looks back at US presidential planes from 1943 to 1990, chronicling the evolution of one of history精东影业 most iconic aircraft and the aircraft that preceded the iconic Boeing 747.

Theodore Roosevelt (in office 1901 -1909)

Technically, Theodore 鈥楾eddy鈥 Roosevelt did not officially fly as president of the United States, but he was the first president to travel outside the country while still in office.

During the early 20th century, was the way to go, and if the president was required to leave the country, he would need to sail. Crossing the Atlantic in the early 1900s took about five days.

The USS Louisiana. Image source: Wikipedia

Since travel was time-consuming, presidents rarely went overseas at the time, remaining close to the seat of power instead. In 1906, Roosevelt had to inspect work being carried out on the Panama Canal. He embarked on a 17-day trip to South America aboard a 16,000-ton battleship, the USS Louisiana.

That trip made Theodore Roosevelt the while still in office.

The first presidential flight

Franklin D. Roosevelt (in office 1933-1945)

In a twist of fate, it was another Roosevelt who made history in terms of presidential travel.

Franklin D. Roosevelt, of Theodore Roosevelt, was the first US president to travel by plane in 1943.

At that time, Franklin Roosevelt needed to join other allied leaders, including British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, for a .

Franklin Roosevelt avoided sailing, the usual mode of transportation at the time, as the journey would have taken at least a week.

Boeing 314 the Dixie Clipper. Image source: Wikipedia

The president traveled on board a commercial Boeing Clipper flying boat, the Dixie Clipper, and, although the plane was not designed for presidential use, it inspired the government to create an aircraft dedicated to flying the president.

The Sacred Cow

A modified Douglas VC-54C Skymaster was chosen to fly the US president. It was a Consolidated C-87A liberator express, a transport version of the B-24 bomber, with a top speed of 245 mph and a range of 3,600 miles.

The 鈥楽acred Cow鈥. image source: Wikimedia

But the aircraft also had a low door, which was helpful to President Franklin Roosevelt, whose legs had been permanently paralyzed in 1921, after contracting polio. The low door made it easier for secret service agents to lift the president, who was in a wheelchair, inside the aircraft.

Eventually, a large custom-made ramp had to be connected to the aircraft so Roosevelt could easily board and leave the aircraft in his wheelchair. However, this method was short-lived as the ramp精东影业 presence easily gave away the president精东影业 arrival or departure.

An engineer from Douglas designed a special lift to hoist the wheelchair in and out of the aircraft. It was placed at the rear of the aircraft so that it lifted the president straight to the entrance of his onboard office.

The 鈥楽acred Cow鈥 in 1948. Image from Wikimedia Commons

The lift was not the only nifty feature included in the first presidential aircraft. The plane was also equipped with a conference room, bullet-proof windows, a private lavatory next to the presidential seat, an electric refrigerator, and even a fold-down bed.

The aircraft was officially named 鈥楾he Flying White House鈥 but, due its size and how it was heavily guarded, the press dubbed it the 鈥楽acred Cow鈥.

The Sacred Cow精东影业 inaugural flight took place in February 1945, when President Roosevelt attended the Yalta Conference in the Crimea. Unfortunately, it proved to be his first and only flight aboard the first presidential aircraft as he died two months later due to a hemorrhagic stroke.

Harry Truman (in office 1945-1953)

The 33rd US president, Harry Truman, inherited The Sacred Cow. But in 1947, the Douglas Aircraft Company rolled out the more modern DC-6, replacing the aging 鈥楩lying White House鈥.

The DC-6 boasted a pressurized cabin, which meant greater comfort for passengers. It also featured the latest in aircraft instrumentation at the time – radar.

But rather than allow the press to name the aircraft, the presidential pilot and the president精东影业 office opted for the name 鈥業ndependence鈥, after President Truman精东影业 hometown in Independence, Missouri.

The Independence. Image from Wikipedia

The Independence boasted a large stateroom, which could be converted into a bedroom, and had room for an additional 25 passengers. A fully-stocked kitchen in the galley ensured that meals could be prepared for everyone onboard.

Also known as the C118 Liftmaster, the Independence had a cruising speed of 320mph, and a range of 4,400 miles.

Dwight D. Eisenhower (in office 1953-1961)

In January 1953, Dwight D. Eisenhower was elected as the 34th president of the United States. Rather than inheriting the presidential aircraft from the previous administration, Eisenhower chose a new presidential plane and crew.

By Tupelo the typo fixer – Own work,

Eisenhower was a private pilot himself and served as Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force in Europe during the Second World War. He chose the Lockheed Constellation, a C-121 with tail number 8610. The aircraft had a top speed of 376 mph and a range of 5,800 miles.

He named the presidential plane 鈥楥olumbine鈥, after the state flower of Colorado, the First lady精东影业 hometown.

Air Force One

During the 1950s, standard US Air Force procedure was to designate a flight by its tail number.

In 1953, this led to a case of mistaken identity during radio communication between the Washington air traffic control in Richmond, the presidential plane, and an Eastern Airlines flight, which had been given the same designated flight / tail number.

While confusion was easily averted, officials realized that the method of giving aircraft a call signal name by using its tail number could eventually lead to accidents.

The mix-up led traffic control to officially designate any aircraft flying the president as AIR FORCE ONE.

Air Force One is not one single aircraft. Any aircraft can be given the radio signal and be identified as Air Force One as soon as the president of the United States steps on board.

Until the president leaves that aircraft, regardless of its size, make, and model, it carries the radio call sign 鈥楢ir Force One鈥. When the aircraft carries the Vice President of the United States, the radio call sign is 鈥楢ir Force Two鈥.

Bye bye, propeller

The first presidential plane to be given the radio signal of Air Force One, the Lockheed Constellation was sleek, but it was still operated by propellers.

By the late 1950s, Russian government delegates were already being transported by jets, so the US presidential office decided to keep up with the times.

The B707 livery during President Eisenhower精东影业 time

By ,

In 1958, the B707, Boeing精东影业 first jetliner, was chosen as the next presidential plane.

In 1959, the Air Force took delivery of the first new jet at the Boeing Seattle plant.

The aircraft set a new coast to coast speed record during its flight back to Washington, taking just three hours and 44 minutes.

The B707 became the official Air Force One until the aircraft were replaced by the B747-200s in 1990.

John F. Kennedy (in office 1961-1963)

The young, modern and much-loved presidential couple, John and Jacqueline Kennedy brought a stylish change to Air Force One by changing its livery.

Raymond Loewy, a French-born American industrial designer, famed for designing everything (the Coca-Cola bottle, Shell and Exxon logos, etc) caught a glimpse of the Air Force One in March 1962. He told his friend, General Godfrey McHugh, President Kennedy精东影业 Air Force aide, that he could change the orange graphics worn by the Air Force One at the time. He offered his design suggestions for free.

Raymond Loewy精东影业 initial design proposal By ,

The result was the iconic blue and white livery still worn by Air Force One today and has since become the global branding for the US presidential plane. Loewy精东影业 livery design sketch can be (MoMa) in New York.

Inside, the aircraft boasted several luxury amenities, including a stateroom with sleeping accommodations for the president and the first lady and first class seats for up to 50 additional passengers.

Modern communications allowed the president and his staff to secure phone calls anywhere in the world and the aircraft精东影业 kitchen allowed fresh meals to be cooked from scratch onboard.

The new Air Force One was only a year old when it flew President John F. Kennedy to Dallas, Texas on November 22, 1963, the day he was assassinated.

Air Force One played a momentous role on that tragic day. It carried the casket of the dead president, and, as it was the extension of the Oval office, Vice President Lyndon Johnson was also sworn in as the new president of the United States in the aircraft.

It carried an ex-president and a current president at the same time, flying one man to be given a funeral, and the other to his new office and residence.

Lyndon B. Johnson (in office 1963-1969)

With each change of presidential administration, the interiors and styles of Air Force One have been altered to reflect the personality of each president.

Air Force One reportedly took on a more grandiose ambiance under the administration of President Lyndon B. Johnson, who was known to be a He had an infamous, that was equipped with a hydraulic lift to ensure that he was at least eye-level with or higher than the person he was speaking with.

Lyndon B. Johnson

Johnson also had an electronic table that could be raised and lowered when it needed

to be used as a conference or coffee table. These are regular features of ordinary modern desk chairs, but these were luxurious state-of-the-art amenities in the early 1960s.

Ralph D. Albertazzie was Air Force One精东影业 pilot during the Nixon administration, but he also flew John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson.

In History Channel精东影业 鈥, Albertazzie revealed that President Johnson had microphones installed in specific places across aircraft. This was so Johnson could ask for a microphone, wherever he was, and all eyes – and ears – would be directed at him.

Richard Nixon (in office 1969-1974)

Air Force One was restored to a simpler and more conservative layout under President Richard Nixon.

According to Nixon精东影业 Air Force One pilot Ralph Albertazzie, the president was fondly referred to by the crew as 鈥渕echanically disinclined,鈥 always having a hard time figuring out switches and buttons in the aircraft.

After his resignation, he boarded the presidential helicopter to travel back to his hometown of Yorba Linda, California. As Air Force One was flying over Missouri, Gerald Ford was sworn in as the 38th president of the United States of America.

It was the first time in history that the presidential plane departed with the call signal of 鈥楢ir Force One鈥, and had to change its radio call signal mid-flight to reflect the aircraft精东影业 tail number. Because it was then carrying an ordinary citizen, rather than a president.

Gerald Ford (in office 1974-1977)

When President Ford was thrust into the office, he had little time to modify or personalize Air Force One. He in the United States since the second World War, so he had bigger fish to fry.

Although he was only in office for three years, he had a total of onboard Air Force One.

Without a doubt, the most unforgettable among these trips would have to be President Ford精东影业 journey to Austria in June 1973, when he was filmed slipping and falling down the stairs of Air Force One.

James ‘Jimmy’ Carter (in office 1977-1981)

President Carter was known to have in his administration, and this was also reflected on Air Force One.

Master Sergeant Charlie Palmer was the chief steward of Air Force One during President Carter精东影业 administration. In the documentary Palmer recalls that they did away with all the corporate 鈥榝reebies鈥 inside the aircraft.

He revealed that President Carter would not accept anything from private companies to embellish or stock Air Force One. There were no bells and whistles, and everything was 鈥渂are bones鈥.

Ronald Reagan (in office 1981-1989)

As President Reagan served two terms in office, he became the most frequent flier of Air Force One SAM 27000, logging more than 675,000 miles on the presidential aircraft.

Overall, President Reagan made more than 40 official international trips during his presidency.

Though President Reagan was the most frequent flier of the SAM 27000, manufacture of the presidential aircraft version of the Boeing 747 began during his presidency.

It was only on September 6, 1990, when President George H.W. Bush boarded the B747 that tail number 28000 officially became Air Force One.

The VC-137C SAM 27000, the very same Air Force One that flew US presidents from 1973-2001, can now be found at the Air Force One Pavilion of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum in Simi Valley, California.

The VC-137C SAM 2700 was retired in 2001. In his remarks regarding the last flight of Air Force One 2700, President George W. Bush said: 鈥淢y father flew it frequently, but the President who used it the most was Ronald Reagan. It was from this plane that President Reagan disembarked in Berlin in 1987, and demanded, 鈥楳r. Gorbachev, tear down this wall鈥. And none of those flights would have been possible without the skill and commitment of the air crews of the old 27000.鈥

“And as we lift off aboard Air Force One鈥he winds of freedom will be propelling my mission鈥 As I fly westward over our majestic land, I go knowing that we麓re witnessing an awakening to those self鈥揺vident truths to which our forefathers pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor.” -鈥 Ronald Reagan, April 23, 1986

Atlas Air, the US-based provider of freight and passenger ACMI operations, reported record results for 2021, boosted by strong demand for air freight.

Atlas operates the world精东影业 largest fleet of 747 freighters, plus provides customers with Boeing 747, 777, 767 and 737 aircraft for domestic, regional and international cargo and passenger operations.

The airline, which operates services for FedEx and DHL among many others, reported 2021 revenue of $4 billion and net income of $493.3 million, up from $3.2 billion and $360.3 million in 2020.

Atlas Air said it expects the strong air freight environment to continue. The company is benefitting from supply chain bottlenecks pushing more volumes towards air freight

鈥淲e are leveraging our world-class fleet and global operating capabilities to increase aircraft utilization and capitalize on strong demand for our services and dedicated freighters, as well as on higher airfreight yields,鈥 chief executive John Dietrich said in the financial results statement on February 17, 2022.

Atlas Air said it had placed all four of its new and incoming 747-8Fs under long-term agreements. The aircraft are due to be delivered between May and October this year.

It also says there is strong demand for the four new 777-200LRF that it ordered in January 2022, with one due to be delivered in the fourth quarter of 2022 and the other three in 2023.

Atlas Air has also recently been buying 747s that it used to lease. It purchased six of its existing 747-400Fs in 2021 and said it will buy another five during 2022 when their leases end.

鈥淎cquiring these widebody freighters underscores our confidence in the demand for dedicated international airfreight capacity, particularly in express, e-Commerce and fast-growing global markets,鈥 Atlas Air said.

For the first quarter of 2022, Atlas Air is expecting a strong performance, with net profit similar to the first quarter of 2021 and revenue of around $1 billion.

Dietrich concluded: 鈥淲e also have a strong position and look forward to growing our Titan dry leasing business. And our strategic focus on express, e-Commerce and fast-growing markets will continue to drive our business forward.鈥

After their offer was rejected by British Airways, ultra-low fare airline start-up Avatar Airlines proposed to buy Thai Airways retiring Boeing 747 fleet.

In October 2020, Avatar Airlines offered British Airways a 22% stake in exchange for its retired fleet of 26 Boeing 747-400s. However, the airline had not raised enough money and the British government refused to process the application.

On November 5, 2020, Thai Airways announced the sale of all 10 of its Boeing 747-400 jets. The company was soon after approached by Avatar Airlines with an intention for purchase. The terms of the offer are still unclear.

鈥淥ur offer to Thai Airlines is part of a bigger partnership opportunity that we believe will not only accelerate Avatar精东影业 plans to start flying within 12-18 months, but also position Thai Airways for a codeshare entry into the U.S. market and a long-term relationship between our two companies,鈥 said Avatar精东影业 founder and Chief Executive Officer Barry Michaels in a press release.

Avatar Airlines has not gotten off the ground since its creation in 1992. The company plans to operate 鈥渦ltra-low fare鈥 non-stop flights within the Continental US and Hawaii, exclusively flying the Boeing 747 aircraft. The fares would be as low as $19 one-way.

According to the company’s website, Avatar would make exclusive use of the jumbo Boeing 747 and 鈥渨ill pioneer a new age of budget travel for a new millennium.鈥 It intends to start operations with four Boeing 747-400 aircraft, later adding eight more and own a total of 30 Boeing 747s by the end of the third year.

The start-up airline plans to become the leader in the industry by affordability and cost-effectiveness. It plans to operate service between Los Angeles, Las Vegas, New York JFK and Miami.

The unique business model would include the airline offering an annual membership for unlimited flights bookable within 72 hours for just the cost of taxes and fees. Furthermore, the company精东影业 aircraft would serve as flying billboards and the overhead bins in the passenger’s cabin would also be used for advertisement.

The era of the most iconic passenger jet of all time is almost over. News of its grounding by one or another airline is coming almost every day, which begs the question: can you still catch a flight aboard the Queen?

Of course, dozens of private and government-operated Boeing 747s are still in service and show no signs of retirement. But not everyone can boast of a possibility to hop on Air Force One or its many sisters.

Then here is cargo hauling. Unexpected upside of COVID-19 induced crisis came in an exploding demand for long-range heavyweights that can carry everything from humanitarian aid to dramatic increase in Amazon shipments, so 747 freighters are roaming the skies as if it精东影业 still the 80s. But you would have to pack yourself in a cardboard box to catch one of those flights and not everyone may find it convenient.

Luckily, passenger Whales are not yet extinct. So, a small list of carriers that still offer tickets on their 747s can be compiled, giving you a possibility to experience the double-decker before it goes away forever. Just keep in mind that travel restrictions and quarantines are still in place in many countries, so, although there are many chances, most of them are not for everybody.

Lufthansa (LHAB) (LHA)

After British Airways suddenly retired its jumbo jets, Germany精东影业 Lufthansa (LHAB) (LHA) remains the largest operator of the aircraft and amongst the last in Europe. The amount of flights is still impressive though, as the carrier精东影业 Boeing 747-8s fly daily between Frankfurt (FRA) and Chicago (ORD), Mexico City (MEX), Los Angeles (LAX), Bangkok (BKK), Nanjing (NKG), San Paolo (GRU), Shanghai (PVG) and Johannesburg (JNB), covering four continents and providing the most convenient opportunity to say farewell to the Queen.

Air China

Third-largest Chinese airline still operates two models of the aircraft: it flies new 747-89L between Guangzhou (CAN) and Beijing (PEK) on a weekly basis, and two slightly older 747-4J6s: one between Chongqing (CKG), Beijing (PEK), London (LHR) and Shanghai (SHA), another between Tianjin (TSN), Madrid (MAD and Beijing (PEK).

Rossiya

A part of Aeroflot group, Rossiya specializes in internal flights within Russia. Its Boeing 747-400s 鈥 slightly older model 鈥 are still in use connecting the European part with Russia精东影业 Far East. With relatively loose restrictions on domestic travel, once in the country, you can find various daily or semi-daily flights between Moscow (SVO), Sochi (AER), Yekaterinburg (SVX), Khabarovsk (KHV), Vladivostok (VVO) and Simfeopol (SIP).

This South Korean carrier still retains one last 747-400 and operates it on weekly flights between Seoul (ICN), Nanjing (NKG) and ChangChun (CGQ).

Mahan Air

Iranian carrier精东影业 sole Boeing 747-400 was returned from storage last year and is now used for flights between Teheran (THR) and Kerman (KRM). Although the same route is usually serviced by various Airbus wide body airplanes, according to Flightradar24, the jumbo jet is still occasionally used.
