Passengers at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (LOS) in Lagos vented their anger and frustration on airport equipment and airline check-in counters after a series of flight cancellations.

The incident occurred on February 12, 2024 at around 18:00 local time, after Nigerian airline Dana Air announced the cancellation of two flights bound for Port Harcourt Airport (PHC) and Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport (QOW) in Owerri. Both flights were originally scheduled to depart at noon.

Nigerian media outlets reported that Dana Air officials informed waiting passengers that flights that had been postponed from February 11, 2024  would be departing on February 12, 2024 at 10:00 and 12:00 noon.

One of the frustrated passengers took to X (formerly Twitter) to post about the cancellations that stretched from 08:00 to 20:00

鈥淯nfortunately, around 6 PM, Dana announced more cancellations with no concrete plan on refunds or rebookings. That is when the furious passengers started vandalizing airport property,鈥 an aviation official told local media outlets.

鈥淪ome passengers had been waiting since yesterday after their initial flights were canceled. They were promised the flights would depart today, but after over three hours of further delays, there were more cancellations,鈥 the official added.

Witnesses told Nigerian media that several passengers started disconnecting the airline精东影业 check-in computers, and that some airline staff were also 鈥渞oughed up鈥 by the angry crowd.

Airport security eventually took control of the situation, and the enraged passengers were able to depart to their destinations at 21:00 local time.

Cathay Pacific cancels flights over Chinese New Year amid crew shortages聽 /articles/cathay-pacific-cancels-flights-chinese-new-year Mon, 08 Jan 2024 12:05:14 +0000 /?p=88886 Cathay Pacific Airways has announced that it has been forced to cut a dozen flights a day on…

Cathay Pacific Airways has announced that it has been forced to cut a dozen flights a day on average until the end of February 2024. The drastic move comes as the Hong Kong-based carrier takes action to avoid multiple cancellations and other disruptions as the busy Chinese New Year travel season approaches, while it battles ongoing crew shortages.聽

This latest move follows Cathay精东影业 decision to cancel flights over the peak Christmas and New Year travel period because 鈥渋ts operations were stretched,鈥 the carrier said in a statement.

“Cathay has consolidated on average six flight pairs (12 sectors) per day for the rest of January and February, focusing on routes with multiple daily frequencies, where possible,” the airline said.

The South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported that the airline鈥痗anceled almost 70 flights during the Christmas and New Year holidays, with the airline citing “higher-than-expected pilot absences caused by seasonal illness”.

On January 7, 2024, at least 10 departing and nine arriving flights were canceled by the carrier. Affected destinations included Taipei (TPE), Kaohsiung (KHH), Singapore (SIN), Shanghai (PVG), and Dubai (DXB).

The airline has announced that it has reviewed its flight schedules and has also increased the number of pilots on standby to avoid disruption in the coming weeks.

鈥淲e have taken measures to ensure Cathay Pacific精东影业 flights will operate normally for the coming Chinese New Year travel peak,鈥濃痵aid Cathay Group CEO Ronald Lam Siu-por. 鈥淗ong Kong people traveling out and visitors coming to Hong Kong can be reassured that their travel will go ahead as planned.鈥

In November 2023, Cathay Pacific announced it intended to recruit 5,000 additional employees throughout 2024, having cut staff numbers drastically in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.聽

In December 2023, the Hong Kong Aircrew Officers Association (HKAOA), which represents some of its pilots, said Cathay’s passenger operations had just 58% of the pilots it had on its role before the pandemic.

The association’s Chairman, Paul Weatherill, said that the airline had set itself 鈥渦nrealistic targets鈥 to resume flight capacity.

鈥淭here精东影业 no real ability for the system to absorb these changes, they knock on and end up canceling more than just one flight,鈥 he said.

In a briefing to industry analysts in November 2023, the airline Cathay revealed its goal to rebuild its cargo and passenger capacities to pre-pandemic levels by the end of 2024. In October 2023, passenger capacity was at 62% of 2019 levels, and cargo operations were at 79%.

Cathay was one of the world精东影业 major airlines hardest hit by the pandemic due to the early imposition and late lifting of travel restrictions in mainland China 鈥 one of the airline’s most important markets.聽

What was meant to be a simple two and a half hour flight back to London-Gatwick Airport (LGW) from Palma de Mallorca Airport (PMI) ended in a 30-hour ordeal that included floods at the airport, an overnight delay and soaking wet luggage.

Passenger Evie Clark took to social media platform TikTok to share her experience, which she described as 鈥30 hours of hell鈥.

Our travel journey from hell馃槴 What was meant to be a 2 hour flight from Mallorca to London gatwick ended up being 30 hours and overnight馃挃 Lucky to be safe but shocked at how the airline treated us

In the video, Clark said that her flight was delayed for 10 hours.

On the weekend of September 2-3, 2023, PMI airport experienced 100 delayed flights and six canceled flights due to storm Dana bringing torrential rains across Spain.

Clark then decided to rest and take a nap on the floor to pass the time, but said she woke up to find that the airport was flooding. Clark’s video included a clip of water pouring from the ceiling.

According to Clark, her airline, easyJet, gave passengers 鈧9 ($9.72) food vouchers as compensation. However, she found that the cafe where she had intended to use the vouchers was closed, despite it only being 14:00 local time.

Clark said she waited another nine hours before being told to go up to the gates, so everyone thought that they could finally depart.

However, moments later, Clark was advised that her flight was canceled and rescheduled to depart the following morning at 08:00 local time.

Clark said that the airline promised passengers a hotel room because of the overnight delay. So she, along with other passengers, had to exit the airport and collect her luggage to go to the hotel.

When Clark found her luggage though, she said both the outside and inside, which included personal clothing and books, were wet. Clark said she was told the bags had been 鈥渓eft out in the rain鈥.

Setting the issue of wet luggage aside, Clark then joined a long queue of other delayed passengers inquiring about overnight hotel stay.

Clark, along with five to six other families, then took a shuttle to get to the hotel where they were informed that no rooms had been booked for them and only 鈥渙ne or two鈥 were available.

One of the families, Clark said, had a newborn baby, so it was unanimously decided by other passengers that the family should be given the room.

鈥淢y stuff is drenched, we have nowhere to sleep, and all they gave us was a 鈧9 food voucher,鈥 Clark said.

Clark posted a follow-up video where she revealed that she was already back in London, but shared that the journey had been “absolute chaos”.

Clark said that one of the passengers became disruptive and had to be removed from the flight prior to departure. Overall, she said she was glad to be home despite the almost two-day ordeal.

A passenger who was onboard United Airlines flight UA 40 on July 3, 2023 is boldly refuting the airline精东影业 statement regarding the flight that ended up as a seven-hour ordeal.

What happened?

Passengers who were booked on a United Airlines flight to Rome精东影业 Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport (FCO) from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) on July 3, 2023 have taken to social media to complain about an uncomfortable seven-hour delay that ended up with cancellation of the flight.

United Airline Flight – EWR to FCO

The passengers claimed that the airline left them 鈥榮tuck鈥 for seven hours inside the Boeing 787 aircraft without any water or food.

The aircraft精东影业 air conditioning did not function either, so temperatures reached up to 27 degrees Celsius, which led to some passengers having panic attacks and experiencing dehydration.

To make things worse, the flight was ultimately canceled at 2AM on July 4, 2023.

United Airlines statement

The airline acknowledged the incident and gave the following statement to US media:

鈥淥n July 3, United flight 40 returned to the gate at Newark Liberty to address a temperature issue. Once there, we offered customers the opportunity to deplane and later provided snacks and beverages,鈥 the statement said.

鈥淥ur crew eventually exceeded their legally permitted duty hours and we had to cancel the flight. We regret we couldn鈥檛 provide our customers a better travel experience and offered compensation in the hopes of having an opportunity to welcome them back.鈥

What really happened?

One of the passengers onboard, who was traveling with his family, took to social media platform TikTok to refute the airline精东影业 statement, and explain what he insists really happened.

An update on the United Airline Flight on July 3rd from EWR to FCO.

The passenger, who goes by 鈥楯ack鈥 on social media, maintained that they were indeed 鈥榯rapped鈥 inside the aircraft for seven hours without food or water.

He said that despite United claiming that their flights would be rebooked, they were not. According to him, the return flights were also eventually canceled by United.

So Jack and his family ended up making their own travel arrangements, first traveling from EWR Airport to New York精东影业 John F Kennedy Airport (JFK). From there, they caught a flight to Rome with Egypt Air, a 鈥渕uch more reliable airline鈥, according to Jack.

Jack精东影业 family ended up spending an extra $4,000 for the expenses, which they asked United to reimburse.

United sent them a reply saying, 鈥淲e don鈥檛 reimburse for pre-arranged expenses such as hotel accommodation at your destination, special events, ground transportation, inconvenience or loss of time.鈥

The airline offered them instead a $400 electronic voucher for use towards a future flight with United, something that Jack says he will never be doing again.

Jack called United Airlines鈥 statement 鈥減athetic鈥, offering a point-by-point rebuttal.

United claims that UA 40 returned to the gate at EWR following a temperature issue. Jack said that this is false, as the aircraft did not return to the gate but instead stayed on the tarmac for seven hours, with passengers getting updates every 45 minutes. Jack said they only got back to the gate after four hours.

United claims that, once the passengers were back at the gate, they were offered snacks and beverages. Jack said this is 鈥減artially false and a straight up lie.鈥 He insists that they were only at the gate for 20 minutes and were encouraged to stay inside the plane because it could be leaving soon, and that only three people actually left the aircraft.

Jack said that the aircraft returned to the tarmac, where they stayed an additional hour before United finally announced the flight cancellation. He said that it took two more hours to return to the gate again.

Jack reiterated that, during those seven hours of delays, there had been no offer of food or beverages. Jack claimed that the only reason passengers received water was that he went to the back of the aircraft himself and 鈥渟tole鈥 some water bottles, passing them around to fellow passengers.

According to Jack, the flight attendant simply sat at the back of the plane 鈥渙n her phone鈥 while he did so.

Finally, Jack also refuted United精东影业 statement of offering passengers compensation 鈥渋n the hopes of having an opportunity to welcome them back.鈥 Jack said that $400 does not cover the $4,000 he and his family spent because of the delay and cancellation.

Jack concluded that United精东影业 offer is disappointing, considering that the airline raked in almost $45 billion in revenue the previous year.

At least 2,000 passenger flights have been canceled as Hurricane Ian, one of the most powerful storms ever recorded in the US, makes landfall in Florida. The 鈥榙angerous鈥 hurricane is reported to be almost a Category 5 storm.

In total, around 5,000 passenger flights due to depart or arrive at various US airports on September 30, 2022, have been canceled.

Many scheduled services, more than 2,100 flights, were canceled on September 29 alone.

According to the US , tropical storm-force winds are expected to spread northward across northeastern Florida, Georgia, and Carolina costs. The hurricane has already significantly impacted the operations of major US airports, including Orlando (MCO), Sarasota-Bradenton (SRQ), Melbourne (MEL), and Daytona Beach (DAB) as well as Naples (APF), St Petersburg/Clearwater (PIE), and Tampa (TPA). Flights to and out of these airports have been temporarily halted.

The United Kingdom Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) chief executive Richard Moriarty warned the country精东影业 airlines and airports that excessive flight cancellations and delays have the 鈥減otential to impact confidence levels” across the aviation industry, which is still on the way to recovery.

The warning comes just weeks after passengers started facing long queues, massive flight cancellations and delays at the UK精东影业 busiest airports, including London Heathrow, Manchester Airport, and Gatwick Airport. The travel chaos was attributed to staff shortages across the sector.

In a public letter, the chief of UK CAA said that he expected 鈥渁irlines and airports to work closely together to manage the resourcing challenges鈥. Moriarty also requested that flight cancellations must be announced well ahead.

鈥淎t a minimum, we would like to see passengers given notice so that they do not travel to airports unnecessarily and are able to make alternative arrangements where possible and appropriate,鈥 Moriarty wrote in the public letter.

鈥淚 would also like to take the is opportunity to remind you of your legal obligations to provide passengers with information about their rights when flights are disrupted, to offer passengers a choice of refund or alternative travel arrangements at the earliest opportunity.鈥

On April 8,2022, the chief executive of Manchester Airports Group, Charlie Cornish, apologized to travelers for the chaos they experienced in recent weeks in a public letter.

Cornish remarked that the UK civil aviation sector has seen a 鈥渟tunning鈥 recovery in international air travel since February 2022. However, due to staff shortages across the industry, Cornish warns of more queues ahead of the Easter holidays.

“We are busy recruiting new officers and taking them through the rigorous training and testing needed to work in aviation security. We are doing this in one of the most challenging employment markets we have seen,鈥 Cornish added.

Cornish said that these challenges were temporary, and that the airports were focused on getting back to normal in time for the peak summer season.

British Airways and the low-cost carrier easyJet canceled hundreds of flights due to staff shortages amid the new surge of COVID-19 virus infections among employees of both airlines.

On April 4, 2022, alone, British Airways cut around 100 flights to and from its base at Heathrow Airport (LHR) blaming higher than usual levels of employee absence because of the virus. Meanwhile, easyJet canceled 222 services between April 1 and April 4, 2022. The British low-cost carrier attempted to offset employee shortages by rostering additional standby crew members, but the effort was not enough to secure the workforce needed.

鈥淎s a result of the current high rates of Covid infections across Europe, like all businesses easyJet is experiencing higher than usual levels of employee sickness,鈥 an easyJet spokesperson was quoted by as saying.

Due to massive flight cancelations, travel chaos hit some of the UK精东影业 largest airports where passengers at Heathrow (LHR), Manchester (MAN), and Edinburgh (EDI) airports were stuck in long queues while waiting for check-in. Like airlines, local airports have also faced staff shortages at the time when the demand for summer season air traveling was picking up as travel restrictions were removed.

鈥淥ur whole industry is facing staff shortages and recruitment challenges at present, after the most damaging two years in its history,鈥 a spokesperson of Manchester Airport told BBC. 鈥淭he removal of all travel restrictions after two years, coupled with the start of the summer travel season, has seen a rapid increase in passenger numbers, which is putting an enormous strain on our operation.鈥

Hundreds of flights have been canceled in Europe due to life-threatening, hurricane-strength storm Eunice, which hit some of the biggest airports in Europe on February 18, 2022.

Storm Eunice with severe winds has already hit the United Kingdom and Ireland on early February 18, 2022. The Met Office, the UK精东影业 national weather service, issued a Red Warning and asked locals to avoid leaving their homes if unnecessary as the storm is expected to 鈥渂ring damaging and disruptive winds for most of the UK.鈥 The authority also warned that strong swings may potentially cause severe damages to buildings, roofs and power lines as gusts could reach a speed of more than 90 miles per hour.

The storm has already disrupted the operations of various European airlines. A number of British air carriers, such as British Airways and easyJet, have been forced to cancel or divert their flights due to safety hazards. The UK flag carrier, British Airways, was forced to cut at least 80 flights to and from London airports, including 44 operations to and from Heathrow (LHR) and 36 flights at London City (LCY).鈥

Meanwhile, British low-cost carrier easyJet warned of significant disruption to its services from both Gatwick (LGW) and Bristol (BRS).

“Due to strong winds impacting parts of the UK today, like other airlines we are experiencing some disruption to our flying program and have been required to cancel a small number of flights to and from the UK,” a spokesperson of easyJet told

The storm is moving towards other European countries. Dutch flagship airline KLM Royal Dutch Airlines said it had canceled almost 170 flights that were scheduled to be operated on Friday.

鈥淒ue to stormy weather in Amsterdam on Thursday 17 February and Friday 18 February 2022, our flights to, from, or via Amsterdam Airport Schiphol may be disrupted,鈥 the carrier said.

European network manager Eurocontrol predicted 鈥渕ajor disruption鈥 for UK airports including London Luton, London Heathrow, Stansted, Manchester with the storm then expected to affect operations at Amsterdam Schiphol, Paris Charles de Gaulle and Brussels.

Because of the potential for disruptions, some airports, including Amsterdam, are not accepting diversions.

More than 700 flights were canceled in the United States after SkyWest Airlines faced a glitch in an internal computer system. Even after the issues were resolved, the knock-on effects of the disruption led to further delays and cancelations.

The connection with SkyWest Airlines servers was lost on October 21, 2021, resulting in cancelations across the regional carrier精东影业 network, with the majority of them at the carrier精东影业 base at Fresno Yosemite International Airport (FAT) in California. When the SkyWest (SKYW) servers went offline, the airline lost the ability to provide any services, meaning hundreds of flights were first temporarily delayed and later canceled.

“SkyWest (SKYW) experienced an internal technical issue resulting in approximately 700 flight cancellations before the issue was resolved Thursday evening. We apologize to customers for the inconvenience; we are working to minimize the impact on Friday’s schedule and to return to normal operations as quickly as possible,” a spokesperson for the airline told a local outlet on the day of the glitch.

According to FlightAware.com data,  SkyWest (SKYW) resumed some scheduled flights  late on October 21, 2021. However, the operational disruption continued through the morning of the following day. On October 22, 2021, SkyWest Airlines partner Delta Air Lines issued an apology for the incident.

鈥淲e are aware of a technical issue affecting flights operated by Delta connection partner SkyWest (SKYW). Our technical teams are engaged with SkyWest IT to resolve the issue and minimize the impact on our customers. We are working with customers directly to accommodate them to their destination as soon as possible and apologize for the inconvenience,鈥 the read.

SkyWest Airlines has a fleet of 580 aircraft and operates flights to more than 235 destinations across the North American region for Alaska Airlines, American Airlines (A1G) (AAL), Delta Air Lines, and United Airlines.
