Two Boeing planes were involved in a ground collision at Chicago O鈥橦are International Airport  (ORD) on the evening of January 14, 2024.

A Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) spokesperson told The Independent that an All Nippon Airways Boeing 777-300 (JA784A) was taxiing for departure when its left winglet struck the stabilizer of a Delta Air Lines Boeing 717.

The collision occurred when the Delta flight had just concluded its final parking after performing a flight from Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW).

No injuries were reported and the incident took place in an area that was not under traffic control.

A Delta Air Lines spokesperson said that the B717 is undergoing inspection by airline mechanics.

ANA told The Independent that all of the B777 passengers deplaned safely after the incident, and that its top priority is the safety of its flight crew and passengers. The Japanese carrier also apologized for the convenience caused to its customers.

Boeing is currently undergoing investigation and scrutiny after a door plug on an Alaska Airlines B737 MAX 9 detached from the fuselage mid-flight on January 6, 2024.

Alaska Airlines and United Airlines reported that loose bolts and hardware were found when the carriers conducted inspections of their respective Boeing 737-9 MAX fleets.

Boeing said that it is increasing its quality control checks as the FAA investigates its production line of B737 MAX 9.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is also currently conducting an investigation into the incident.聽

The wingtips of a GoJet plane and SkyWest plane collided while both aircraft waited on the tarmac for gates at Chicago O鈥橦are International Airport (ORD) on the evening of December 5, 2023.

The SkyWest aircraft, a Bombardier CRJ-700 under flight 5433 (operating as United Express), was taxiing to its gate when its wingtip made contact with a GoJet aircraft, also a CRJ-700 under flight 4423, at about 19:00 local time.

No injuries were reported, and the planes both made it to their respective gates and were able to deplane passengers as normal.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is investigating the incident.

In October 2023, a SkyWest aircraft on the same flight number was also involved in a collision at ORD airport. It was one of two planes struck by a baggage cart on the runway.

Wingtip collisions are common at busy airports. It is usually caused by miscalculation when maneuvering aircraft, darkness and miscommunications between pilots and ramp control.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has given the final regulatory approval to construct a new passenger terminal at Chicago O鈥橦are International Airport (ORD).

To commemorate the approval, U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg joined local, state, and federal officials at ORD airport on November 21, 2022.

鈥淐hicago精东影业 transportation infrastructure is what makes this city an economic powerhouse of global importance,鈥 Buttigieg said in a .

鈥淣ow, as we prepare to break ground on O鈥橦are精东影业 newest terminal, Chicago and this entire region will be positioned to grow and create good-paying jobs through the benefits of first-rate infrastructure, beginning with the construction project itself,鈥 Buttigieg added.

The FAA’s review process began in 2018 and consisted of a technical review of the environmental impact of the Terminal Area Plan (TAP). The review is a common requirement by the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) for large airport capital projects.

The FAA concluded that proposed construction projects and changes to air traffic procedures will not significantly affect any environmental resources, including noise, air quality, water resources, and historic sites.

Construction is expected to begin in spring 2023.

Urban air mobility firm Eve is going to run a trial using helicopters in downtown Chicago to gain a better understanding of how flying taxis will work for commuters in real life operations.

Eve, spun off from Brazilian aerospace manufacturer Embraer, said it wants to study operations, ground services, passenger journeys and the needs of operators of electric vertical take-off and landing vehicles (eVTOLs).

The Chicago simulation will be conducted using helicopters from Blade Air Mobility and run for three weeks, starting with ground tests on September 12, 2022, and passenger flights on September 14, 2022. Ground tests will be carried out at Vertiport Chicago, an existing downtown heliport facility.

The helicopter being used to replicate Eve精东影业 planned eVTOL will take passengers from the Vertiport to two helistops in the northwest and southwest of Chicago on morning and afternoon weekday flights. Passengers can book flights through Blade to 鈥渆xperience the future of commuting鈥 Eve said.

鈥淪imulating the eVTOL operation in Chicago allows us to study how people will experience this service and understand the entire ecosystem requirements for our product and services, while showcasing the benefit of Urban Air Mobility in one of North America’s most prominent and populated cities,鈥 said Andr茅 Stein, co-CEO of Eve, in a press release dated August 23, 2022.

Eve has formed a consortium of partners for the simulation, including Blade, Republic Airways, Halo Aviation, Vertiport Chicago, Village of Tinley Park, Village of Schaumburg, ACCIONA, SkyWest (SKYW), Inc. and Speedbird Aero.

Along with regulation and integration into airspace alongside existing aircraft, customer acceptance is set to be one of the key challenges for the emerging UAM market.

“For Eve, it is essential to understand and address through these projects involving partners and the community the key challenges associated with the main pillars of the UAM ecosystem,鈥 said Luiz Mauad, Vice President of Services and Fleet Operations at Eve.

鈥淥ur proposal brings together all stakeholders and counts on different views and feedback to structure and deliver the best solutions.”

Full freighter takeoff. The first aircraft for France-based logistics company GEODIS is taking off on September 5, 2021 in the company精东影业 colors.

Its first flight will take it from Amsterdam across the Atlantic to Chicago, GEODIS announced via social media.

GEODIS has leased the A330-300 aircraft, which has undergone a passenger-to-freight conversion, for several years in order to provide more air freight capacity amid tight supply chains.

鈥淲ith the continued strain on airfreight capacity, we wish to ensure a more sustainable supply of air cargo space for our clients and are therefore investing in this, our own, first dedicated freighter,鈥 commented Marie-Christine Lombard, chief executive of GEODIS, in a statement on August 31, 2021.

The aircraft will operate between Amsterdam, London, Chicago and Hong Kong, but will also serve the key China – Europe route for the peak season at the end of 2021.

Giving further details, GEODIS said the A330-300 with its branding will initially fly three times a week between Amsterdam/London and Chicago (AMS/ STN鈥揙RD) and will also be deployed on weekly rotations between AMS and Hong Kong (HKG).

鈥淭his will provide our clients with a reliable schedule of flights, under our operational control, helping them overcome the significant logistical constraints that the market is currently enduring,鈥 commented Eric Martin-Neuville, Executive Vice President Freight Forwarding of GEODIS.

The global COVID-19 pandemic has grounded aircraft, leading to a shortage of air freight capacity and prompting airlines to invest in freighter capacity.

In addition, restrictions to curb the spread of the virus, especially in China, have led to handling issues in recent weeks.

Notably, Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG) has imposed restrictions on freight volumes, so airlines have switched to Zhengzhou Xinzheng International Airport CGO, GEODIS said in a September 2, 2021 update. However, that has in turn created backlogs at CGO, so the hub is no longer accepting any inbound cargo there, forcing airlines to again cancel flights.

The International Air Transport Association said on August 31, 2021, that while strong growth in air cargo demand was expected to continue, the Delta variant of COVID could present risks for supply chains and therefore air freight.
