EGYPTAIR has sold its entire fleet of Airbus A220-300 aircraft to the lessor Azorra as the airline prepares for an influx of new planes over the coming years.

In total, Azorra has purchased 12 Airbus A220s, all of which were owned by EGYPTAIR and less than five years old.聽聽

John Evans, CEO and Founder of Azorra, said: 鈥淥ur strong partnerships with Airbus and Pratt & Whitney have been key to facilitating this creative transaction. These young, well-maintained aircraft with freshly overhauled, updated engines from Pratt & Whitney have strong market demand and are very attractive to Azorra精东影业 rapidly growing customer base.鈥

He added: 鈥淲e are so grateful for EGYPTAIR精东影业 trust and confidence in Azorra to provide a fleet transition solution, while clearing the path for new Airbus widebody aircraft.鈥

The agreement between EGYPTAIR and Azorra was announced on February 1, 2024, just three months after the carrier confirmed deals for new planes with Airbus and Air Lease Corporation (ALC) at the Dubai Airshow 2023.

In Dubai, the EGYPTAIR CEO Yehia Zakaria announced the airline will lease 18 Boeing 737 MAX 8 jets from ALC, with delivery expected from the start of 2025 through to 2026.聽聽聽聽

More significantly, though, EGYPTAIR also announced at the air show that it had placed an order with Airbus for 10 A350-900 widebody planes which will eventually become the carrier精东影业 flagship aircraft.聽聽

Airbus designed the A220 family aircraft to feel like a wide-body aircraft, but with the arrival of the A350 on the horizon, EGYPTAIR may feel that the single-aisle Airbus is now surplus to requirements.

According to ch-aviation.com, only two of EGYPTAIR精东影业 A220-300s are currently active, leaving 10 unused.

鈥淲e highly value the creativeness shown by . We are thankful to the team for their commitment which led to such a successful transaction,鈥 Zakaria said.聽聽

EgyptAir has launched its first ever direct service from its hub at Cairo International Airport to Dublin, Ireland.

The state-owned flag carrier commenced service between Cairo and Dublin on flight MS775 on June 2, 2022, operated by an Airbus A320neo, according to the airline on Facebook.

The airline will operate four return flights a week with the Airbus A320neo, which has a configuration of 16 business class seats and 126 economy seats.

The airline announced in February 2022 its intent to start services to Dublin (DUB), a move welcomed by the airport.

The crash of Egyptair flight MS804 from Paris to Cairo in 2016 was caused by one of the pilots smoking a cigarette onboard, according to an Italian newspaper report.

All 66 onboard the Airbus A320, registered SU-GCC, died when it crashed into the Mediterranean Sea. Egyptian authorities have never published a final report into the crash.

The Corriere della Sera on April 26, 2022, cited , which is investigating the crash with a view to bringing manslaughter charges. According to the report, the fire was started in the flight deck when one of the pilots lit a cigarette. The report finds that smoking was not forbidden by Egypt Air at the time.

The reason the fire started on the accident flight is because one of the emergency oxygen masks was leaking oxygen, after a valve had been placed in the incorrect position when it was replaced three days earlier, the reports states. It was the combination of leaked oxygen and the cigarette that ignited the fire that led to the crew losing control of the aircraft.

French air accident investigators from the BEA stated on July 6, 2018 that they considered 鈥渢he most likely hypothesis is that a fire broke out in the cockpit while the aeroplane was flying at its cruise altitude and that the fire spread rapidly resulting in the loss of control of the aeroplane.鈥

Egyptian air accident investigators have previously said they found traces of explosives, which led them to hand over the investigation to public prosecutors.

The BEA at the time criticized Egyptian authorities for not releasing a final report and said they would have used the final report to set out differences of opinion with Egyptian investigators.

鈥淭he BEA considers that it is necessary to have this final report in order to have the possibility of understanding the cause of the accident and to provide the aviation community with the safety lessons which could prevent future accidents.鈥

The post What is the oldest airline in Africa? appeared first on 精东影业.]]>

Singling out a region精东影业 oldest airline can be difficult. With KLM, the undisputed oldest airline in the world, the task is easy as it has never changed its name, nor has it undergone any major transformations apart from the 2003 merger with Air France, which was done carefully to preserve the airline精东影业 identity.

But most airlines do not have that luxury. They have been renamed, transformed, merged, separated, closed and reopened, until the line of succession becomes hard to follow. Many of the oldest African airlines are prime examples of this.

So, what is the oldest airline in Africa? Due to the turbulent history of the continent, there isn鈥檛 a straightforward answer.

The earliest air service in Africa was conducted in the early 20th century, on behalf of colonial governments, and was usually operated by European companies. It was only in the 1960s that newly independent African nations began creating their own airlines, some of which continue operating to this day.

But this picture 鈥 a common narrative, presented in many popular depictions of African history 鈥 is not entirely complete.

尝别迟精东影业 take a look at Egyptair. It was established in 1932, commenced operations in 1933, and continues flying to this day. However, its history is rather complex. Initially called Misr Airwork, it was renamed, reorganized and has changed hands several times. In 1949 the company was nationalized and renamed Misrair; in 1957, after Egypt and Syria formed the United Arab Republic (UAR), the airline was merged with Syrian Airways and became United Arab Airlines, before being reformed again after the UAR精东影业 collapse, and was finally renamed Egyptair in 1971.

A similar history of transformation can be found by taking a closer look at South African Airways (SAA), seemingly the second oldest African airline. It was established in 1934, but its history goes much deeper. Its establishment was a result of the South African government nationalizing Union Airways, a private airline which began in 1929. SAA inherited Union Airways鈥 assets, staff and network, mirroring the transition from Misr Airwork to Misrair.

So, can SAA be called the oldest African airline? There is at least one more candidate for this title, and its history goes even further.

In 1927 a company called the Rhodesian Aviation Syndicate was established in Bulawayo. The British colony of Southern Rhodesia had witnessed several attempts to establish an aerial service in the early 1920s, but these initiatives hadn鈥檛 been successful. Despite an impressive sounding name, Rhodesian Aviation Syndicate was a personal initiative with a single aircraft 鈥 an old Airco DH.6 鈥 which flew chartered flights for several weeks before being damaged in a crash landing.

In subsequent years, the Syndicate acquired more aircraft, was renamed the Rhodesian Aviation Company, before becoming Rhodesian and Nyasaland Airways (RANA) in the 1930s. In 1946, RANA was consolidated with Southern Rhodesia Air Services and became Central African Airways (CAA).

When the British colonies served by CAA gained independence, the company was split between them. In the 1960s its assets and routes were distributed between Zambia Airways, Air Malawi and Air Rhodesia. Of these three, only Zambia Airways survived until the mid-1990s.

In December 2021, with the help of Ethiopian Airlines, Zambia Airways was resurrected. While its fragmented history means that it can鈥檛 legitimately lay claim to being the oldest African airline, its roots can be tracked back to 1927, pre-dating both Egyptair and SAA精东影业 predecessor, Union Airways.

It精东影业 also possible that there are more airlines in Africa with lineage traceable to colonial air services and small private companies in the 1920s. But would they qualify for the position of Africa精东影业 oldest airline?

Whatever the case, the question of which airline is Africa精东影业 oldest remains, for the most part, unanswered.

EgyptAir, the state-owned flag carrier of Egypt, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the government of Ghana under which the airline will become a strategic partner for the creation of a new Ghanaian national air carrier.

The MoU was signed by Joseph Kofi Adda, the Aviation Minister of Ghana, and Hassan Mounir, the Deputy Chairman of EgyptAir on October 21, 2020.

Speaking to local media, Amr Abu El-Enein, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of EgyptAir, said the airline is 鈥減leased with the confidence of the Ghanaian government in choosing and preferring EgyptAir for this strategic partnership in establishing a new airline鈥.

The CEO of EgyptAir announced that the new national air carrier would be expected to operate its flights from the headquarters in Accra, the capital of Ghana. Amr Abu El-Enein also stated that the airline would fly regular routes throughout Africa, and connect it with countries in North and South America.

Earlier in 2018, the government of Ghana signed a similar MoU with Ethiopian Airlines, the state-owned flag carrier of Ethiopia. Under the MoU, Ethiopian Airlines was supposed to cooperate with the Ghanaian government in funding and management issues of the new national airline.

However, the Ghanaian government was reportedly concerned over Ethiopian Airlines鈥 suitability for further contribution after the parties did not reach an agreement over key issues such as routes, flight frequencies, funding aspects and tenure of the management. While both sides were struggling in seeking a unanimous solution, EgyptAir offered the government more favorable terms than Ethiopian did, reported local media.

The government of the country was considering holding 10% of shares in the new air carrier with the rest held by private investors.

Before implementation, the recent agreement between EgyptAir and the government of Ghana would need to get the state精东影业 Parliament approval.
