Embraer President and CEO Francisco Gomes Neto was in a buoyant mood as he took to the stage, keen to seize his moment in the spotlight and celebrate the company精东影业 success.  

And who could blame him after Embraer精东影业 incredibly strong showing at and a net revenue that is set to grow by 85% from 2023 to 2030.听听

One of the most intriguing plans detailed during the press conference on July 23, 2024, was Embraer精东影业 plans to introduce an automated takeoff system. 

Embraer Commercial CEO Arjan Meijer lauded the new system as a first for commercial aviation with benefits available for both airlines and pilots.  

With the Enhanced Take Off System in place, E2 aircraft will produce a more precise and efficient rotation moment and flight trajectory, reducing the required field length and pilot workload. 

The system will reduce the takeoff distance and increase the takeoff weight, allowing aircraft to fly further, particularly from airports with short runways such as London-City Airport (LCY).  

In other developments the E175 will undergo improvements that are more common features on E2 aircraft.  

These include larger overhead bins allowing each passenger to have space for their carry-on luggage, mood lighting, multi-band satellite connectivity, an option for Recaro seating and next generation weather and data avionics. 

Improvements to the E2 family aircraft include the E195-E2 becoming 12.5% more fuel efficient than competitor aircraft, up from the previous 10%, an improved range from 2600nm to 3000nm and an option to add an extra row of four seats to most E195-E2 configurations. 

Additionally, Embraer announced its latest aircraft, the 190F E-Freighter, passenger to full cargo conversion, has been certified by the National Civil Aviation Agency of Brazil (ANAC).   

The aircraft, which is making its public debut this week at the Farnborough Airshow, was developed to fill a gap in the air cargo market and to replace older less efficient models.    

The E-Freighter is due to receive European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certification later this year and for the Cargo Loading System shortly after.

The direct flights to the two Mexican cities will take off from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and will be launched in the 2024/2025 winter season.

The airline said that its guests search for travel destinations with warm weather, so the new flights will cater to the demand.

La Paz is a coastal city in Mexico popular with scuba divers and deep sea fishers. 

Monterrey, an important industrial and business center in Mexico, is fringed by mountains, and is considered to be one of the country精东影业 most liveable cities.

United Airlines confirmed that the time-saving, in-demand overhead bins will be fitted on 50 Embraer E175s with a 76-seat configuration by the end of 2024.  

However, United said it may choose to expand the project and install larger overhead bins on more than 150 aircraft by the end of 2026.   

鈥淯nited is the first airline to offer these larger overhead bins on E175 airplanes and estimates this move will nearly eliminate the need for one million annual passengers to gate-check bags on more than 150,000 E175 flights,鈥� the airline said. 

United now has more than 200 mainline aircraft outfitted with bins large enough to fit every passenger’s carry-on bag and is in the process of retrofitting its domestic narrowbody fleet. 

“Customer sentiment for the new overhead bins and signature interiors has been extremely positive. By helping to eliminate the need to gate check bags, we are seeing an increase in gate and boarding satisfaction,” Linda Jojo, United’s Chief Customer Officer, said. “This is just the latest way we’re working to create an industry-leading experience for all our customers 鈥� whether they’re on an international or regional flight.” 

Every E175 aircraft outfitted with these overhead bins will also have braille and tactile placards that enhance accessibility, part of a larger initiative the airline announced in 2023. 

United Airlines and United Express operate an average of more than 4,000 flights a day to over 350 airports across six continents.

SkyWest boosts United Airlines fleet with further 20 Embraer E175 jets听

On March 3, 2024, SkyWest confirmed that the 20 partner-financed Embraer E175s will be placed with United under a four-year contract.听

The agreement is in addition to a previously announced deal for 19 SkyWest-owned E175s to boost United精东影业 operations. 

In October 2023, SkyWest announced it had placed an order with Brazilian planemaker Embraer for the purchase of 19 E175 aircraft that will fly exclusively with United under a Capacity Purchase Agreement (CPA).   

Skywest paid $1.1 billion for the new 70-seater aircraft, which will arrive in a three-class configuration starting in the final months of 2024.听

SkyWest plan to deliver 24 E195s to United in 2024 and one to Delta Air Lines, and then in 2025 United will receive an additional seven aircraft and Alaska Airlines will acquire one.  

Finally, according to SkyWest, United will receive eight E195s in 2026. 

As well as flying for United Express, SkyWest also operates through partnerships with Delta Air Lines as Delta Connection, American Airlines as American Eagle, and Alaska Airlines as Alaska SkyWest.   

By the end of 2026, SkyWest is scheduled to operate a total of 278 E175 aircraft. 

SkyWest orders 19 Embraer E175 jets for operations on United Airlines network

Overall there was a 13% increase in aircraft deliveries, with the commercial and private jet arm of Embraer achieving the standout performances.听

In 2022, Embraer delivered a total of 160 aircraft. In 2023, the figure rose to 181.  

According to the details announced on January 30, 2024, E-Jets family aircraft deliveries increased 12% year on year, from 57 jets in 2022 to 64 in 2023. 

The highlight was the E2 group whose deliveries more than doubled, from 19 aircraft in 2022 to 39 in 2023. 

In the private jet sector, 74 light jets were delivered, – 12% more year on year and the largest volume in seven years. 

And with 41 deliveries, the company精东影业 medium-sized jets also reached double-digit annual growth of 14%.听

The private jet delivered the most times in 2023 was the Phenom 300, with 63 deliveries.

In Q4 alone, Embraer delivered 75 aircraft, including 49 executive jets (30 light and 19 medium), 25 commercial jets and one military C-390 jet. 

The company精东影业 backlog rose by 1.2 billion year on year, reaching a total of $18.7 billion in 2023 – the highest number recorded since Q1 2018. 

The commercial aircraft unit backlog reached 298 in Q4 2023, at a total value of $8.8 billion – a $200 million growth year on year. 

Part of the aircraft backlog includes an order from the Canadian carrier for 25 Embraer E195-E2s, and two E175s from American Airlines to add to its existing purchase of four.听听

Embraer added that it continues to face supply chain delays which have impacted on its 2023 deliveries.听

The order, confirmed on January 3, 2024, includes eight Embraer E-175s and 11 E-170 aircraft, and adds to an already busy 2023 purchasing 22 E-Jets.听听

In March 2023, Envoy ordered six E1-75s, followed by seven E1-75s and five E-170s in June 2023 and then in October 2023 a further four E-175s were added to the list.  

With the newly announced order the American Airlines subsidiary鈥榮 total fleet commitment stands at 169 aircraft made up of 126 E-175s and 43 E-170s.听

Single pilot operations: the aircraft evolution that fires up aviation debate

In Oregan, the Multnomah County announced on December 5, 2023, that a grand jury indicted Joseph David Emerson, 44, on 84 charges.听听

Charges relating to attempted murder were dropped, which means the former pilot faces one count of endangering aircraft in the first degree and 83 counts of recklessly endangering another person. 

On October 22, 2023, Emerson, who at the time was still an Alaska Airlines pilot, was given permission by the aircraft精东影业 captain to travel in the cockpit精东影业 jump-seat.听

He then allegedly reached for the red fire handles midflight, which if activated would have shut off the fuel supply to the engines. 

One of the pilots managed to grab Emerson精东影业 wrists as he pulled the handles down, and they began wrestling with each other for around 30 seconds.   

The other pilot declared an in-flight emergency, turned the autopilot off and rerouted the aircraft to Portland. 

In an affidavit, based on interviews following the incident, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) reported that Emerson said he was 鈥渄reaming鈥� when he pulled the fire handles. His attorneys have previously said he “suffered a panic attack”.  

It was also reported that Emerson had taken a small amount of Psilocybin, which is found in psychedelic mushrooms, around 48 hours before the flight.  

Responding to the grand jury indictment, Emerson精东影业 attorneys said the attempted murder charges “were never appropriate” and he had 鈥渘ever intended to hurt another person or put anyone at risk鈥�. 

“Simply put: Captain Emerson thought he was in a dream; his actions were taken in a single-minded effort to wake up from that dream and return home to his family,” the statement said. 

ABC News reported that the attorneys were 鈥渄isappointed鈥� Emerson had been indicted on the 84 charges.  

“Captain Emerson had no criminal intent, and we look forward to being able to present a fulsome defense at trial and bring forth all the facts and circumstances to a jury. Captain Emerson精东影业 defense team is crafting a release plan and expects that he will finally return home to his family by the end of this week,” the statement added.  

Emerson is currently lodged at the Multnomah County Detention Center. He is currently scheduled to be arraigned on December 7, 2023, at 9:30 am.

The new deliveries, set to begin arriving in the final months of 2024, will be used for operations on the United Airlines network.听听

At present, SkyWest already operates 90 E175 jets for United Airlines, and the newly acquired aircraft will represent a significant increase in the number of flights for the carrier.听听

The E175 aircraft will fly exclusively with United under a Capacity Purchase Agreement (CPA) which larger airlines use to outsource portions of their operations to other airlines.  

Skywest will pay $1.1 billion for the new 70-seater aircraft, which will arrive in a three-class configuration.

Multnomah County Sheriff精东影业 Office confirmed that the 44-year-old Joseph David Emerson, from Pleasant Hill, California, is being held on 83 counts of attempted murder, 83 for reckless endangerment and one charge of endangering an aircraft.

Alaska Airlines confirmed on October 23, 2023, that Emerson was aboard Alaska Airlines Flight 2059 on October 22, 2022, travelling from Seattle Paine Field International Airport (PAE) to San Francisco International Airport (SFO).

As a serving Captain with Alaska Airlines Emerson was granted permission by the pilot in command (PIC) of the Embraer E175 passenger jet to ride in the jump seat.

According to Alaska Airlines, a 鈥渃redible security threat鈥� arose when midflight Emerson 鈥渦nsuccessfully attempted to disrupt the operation of the engines鈥�.

Emerson allegedly attempted to shut down the engines by engaging the Engine Fire Handle, also known as the fire suppression system.

鈥淭he fire suppression system consists of a T-handle for each engine. If the T-handle is fully deployed, a valve in the wing closes to shut off fuel to the engine. In this case, the quick reaction of our crew to reset the T-handles ensured engine power was not lost,鈥� Alaska Airlines said.

Alaska Airlines praised its Captain and First Officer who subdued Emerson during a 鈥渄ifficult and highly unusual situation鈥�.

A recording of one of the on-duty pilots speaking to air traffic control was captured following the incident.

“Okay, let精东影业 give you a heads up. We’ve got the guy that tried to shut the engines down out of the cockpit, and he doesn’t sound like he’s causing any issue in the back right now. I think he’s subdued. We want law enforcement as soon as we get on the ground and parked,鈥� the pilot is heard saying.

The flight, operated by Horizon Air, was then diverted to Portland International Airport (PDX) where an emergency landing was carried out.

鈥淔ollowing appropriate FAA procedures and guidance from Air Traffic Control, the flight was safely diverted to Portland International Airport. Captain Emerson is currently in custody and the event is being investigated by law enforcement authorities, which includes the FBI and the Port of Portland Police Department,鈥� Alaska Airlines said in a statement.

The (FAA) confirmed that it was 鈥渆ngaged with Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air鈥� and is 鈥渟upporting law enforcement investigations鈥�.

In a statement, the FBI said it was investigating the incident and reassured the traveling public that there is no 鈥渃ontinuing threat related to this incident”.

Captain Emerson joined Alaska Air Group as a Horizon First Officer in August 2001. In June 2012, Emerson left Horizon to join Virgin America as a pilot.

Emerson became an Alaska Airlines First Officer following Alaska精东影业 acquisition of Virgin America in 2016. He became an Alaska Airlines Captain in 2019.

鈥淭hroughout his career, Emerson completed his mandated FAA medical certifications in accordance with regulatory requirements, and at no point were his certifications denied, suspended or revoked,鈥� Alaska Airlines added in its statement.

These aircraft will be operated by Envoy Air, American’s wholly-owned subsidiary. This order is valued at $230.6 million at list price.  

The four E175s are set to be delivered in the fourth quarter of 2024. With this addition, Envoy’s all-E-Jet fleet is poised to grow to over 150 aircraft by the end of 2024.
