Thousands of passengers were left stuck in long queues after passport e-gates at major UK airports suffered a nationwide outage on May 7, 2024.

According to the UK Home Office, a wider system network issue was detected at 19:44 local time and a 鈥渓arge scale鈥 contingency response was activated within six minutes. All e-gates were back online shortly after midnight.

The Home Office also said there was 鈥渘o indication鈥 of malicious activity behind the outage and border security was not compromised.

E-gates use facial recognition to check a traveler精东影业 identity and allow them to enter the country without having to be processed or spoken to by a Border Force officer.

During the outage, airport staff resorted to manually processing passengers. The incident came at a peak travel period with many travelers returning home from a long weekend.

A number of passengers took to social media to upload photographs and video footage of the almost-five hour ordeal and the chaos experienced at airports across the country.

Airports affected by the outage were London-Heathrow Airport (LHR), London-Gatwick Airport (LGW), London-Stansted Airport (STN), Edinburgh Airport (EDI), Birmingham Airport (BHX), Manchester Airport (MAN) and Bristol Airport (BRS).

A British Airways flight travelling over the Atlantic returned to London-Gatwick Airport (LGW), reportedly due to a crack developing in the windscreen.

The Boeing 777-200ER left for Orlando Airport (MCO) at 11:09 am local time on Monday, August 21, 2023, but after only a few hours, the aircraft was forced to take a U-turn.听聽

The aircraft, registered G-VIIU, was due to arrive in the United States (US) at 3:00 pm, but after four and a half hours of flying, the plane landed back at Gatwick instead.

Passengers aboard the 24-year-old jet disembarked and the aircraft was taken away to be inspected.

After an overnight stay at LGW, G-VIIU flew to Vieux Fort Hewanorra Airport (UVF) in St Luicia.

鈥淥ur pilots returned to London Gatwick as a precaution due to a minor technical issue, and the aircraft landed normally. London-Gatwick Airport (LGW) has published plans to bring the airport精东影业 existing Northern Runway into routine use alongside its Main Runway.

The application, known as a Development Consent Order (DCO), was submitted to the Planning Inspectorate (PINS) on Thursday July 6, 2023.

Gatwick claims the second runway will create 14,000 new jobs and inject 拢1 billion into the region精东影业 economy every year.听聽聽

78% of residents who expressed an opinion on an additional runway reportedly support Gatwick精东影业 plans, with the economic boost and new jobs they would provide for the region.

Significant commitments would be given to local communities, including legally binding agreements to control noise and reduce carbon emissions.

The 鈥榥oise envelope鈥 guarantee ensures that within nine years of the Northern Runway opening, the airport精东影业 operations will generate less noise than they did in 2019.

The airport also promises the Northern Runway will not be used between 11pm to 6:00am each day.

It would also see the number of homes eligible for an industry-leading noise insulation scheme increase from the current 2,000 to 4,300.

The Northern Runway is currently limited to acting as a taxiway, only available when the Main Runway is out of use.

The application proposes repositioning the center line of the Northern Runway 12 meters north to allow dual runway operations.

Construction could start in 2025 and be completed and ready for operational use by the end of the decade.

Gatwick Airport also promises major road improvements, including a flyover to separate airport and local traffic.

鈥淭he Northern Runway plan will help secure the long-term future of the airport and economic prosperity for thousands of families, businesses, and future generations across the region, 鈥 said Stewart Wingate, CEO of . 鈥淚f approved, our plan will also improve airport resilience, meet future passenger demand, and increase competition in the London airport market, by providing vital new international connections to support 鈥楪lobal Britain鈥.鈥澛

Wingate added: 鈥淭he consultation and engagement activity over the past two years has been hugely valuable in shaping our plans to ensure they best meet the needs and requirements of local people, as well as our airlines, passengers and other stakeholders.听 We are confident that our plans are both economically and environmentally robust.鈥澛

London-Gatwick Airport (LGW) was forced to divert incoming flights after both runways were temporarily closed on May 14, 202 in order to investigate suspected drone activity.

LGW精东影业 airlift was closed from 13:44 to 14:35 local time, and a total of 12 incoming flights were diverted to Stansted Airport (STN), Southend Airport (SEN), Luton Airport (LTN), London-Heathrow Airport (LHR) and Bristol Airport (BRS).

鈥淧assenger safety is the airport’s absolute priority and – following established procedures – operations at London Gatwick were suspended temporarily while investigations into the sighting of a suspected drone close to the airfield took place. These investigations are now completed and the airfield reopened,鈥 a Gatwick Airport spokesperson told various UK media outlets.

Though the investigation has closed, the culprit has not been identified.

According to the , drone pilots are not allowed to fly their drones within 5km of any UK airport or above 400ft in the air.

In December 2018, drone chaos at LGW airport cost the budget airline easyJet at least 拢15 million ($19.4 million).

Mass sightings of drones encroaching LGW airport over the airfield and the single runway during the month caused the cancellation of over 1000 flights and is said to have affected more than 140,000 passengers.

London-Gatwick Airport (LGW) is celebrating a return to profit in 2022 after experiencing significant financial losses as a result of the COVID pandemic.

On March 16, 2023, the UK精东影业 second largest airport released its financial results for 2022 showing revenue over $935 million.

The figures represent a return to a profit of $237.75 million in 2022, after $1bn losses from 2020 and 2021.

Revenues were driven by a strong and steady recovery in passenger numbers throughout 2022 with demand at 70.4% of pre-pandemic levels, equating to 32.8 million passengers passing through the airport in the year ending December 31, 2022.

This includes aeronautical income ($489m), retail income ($192m) and car parking income ($123m).

Despite the encouraging figures bosses at are keeping their feet on the ground, especially with current economic uncertainty and inflationary pressures.

鈥淲hile we still have some way to go to reach a full recovery, we know long-term sustainable investment is critical to the future of our airport and provides a significant boost to the regional and national economy,鈥 said CEO, Stewart Wingate.

Gatwick places some of its success in 2022 down to the airport精东影业 response to a surge in demand leading up to the summer when it took decisive action to ensure passenger disruption was minimal.

London Gatwick精东影业 short-haul network was also the first to show strong recovery in 2022 and now serves 156 destinations, with easyJet flying 72% of those routes.

Short-haul is at 92% of flights flown pre-pandemic, while long-haul connectivity is taking longer to recover but has bounced back robustly in recent months, and now boasts 47 long haul routes – 76% of the number flown pre-pandemic.

The airport精东影业 main runway was also resurfaced in half the time and for half the cost of traditional methods by resurfacing only the most 鈥榯rafficked鈥 parts of its main runway.

Looking at the year ahead Air India will start flying to four new destinations from March 26 and Delta Air Lines returns to Gatwick with the airport精东影业 fourth daily flight to New York from April 10.

From this summer Jet Blue, British Airways and Norse Atlantic Airways will also be operating new long-haul routes to North America and the Caribbean.

鈥淭he decisive actions we took early last year allowed us to offer good levels of service to passengers who travelled through Gatwick. This year we will have even more choice of airlines and destinations for travellers, whether flying for business or leisure,鈥 Wingate added.

Airports in the UK are warning arrival passengers that they may experience delays to their journeys due to border force strikes.

The day of strike action has been called by the Public and Commercial Services (PCS) union whose members are unhappy with pay and conditions in Britain.

The strikes begin on March 15, 2023, and will continue through until around 7am on March 16.

The UK government said it has undertaken extensive planning to minimise disruption, reduce queues and keep our border safe ahead of Border Force strike action.

Airports that have announced customers may experience disruption include London-Gatwick Airport (LGW), London-Heathrow Airport (LHR) and Manchester Airport (MAN).

According to the PCS alongside its 133,000 striking on March 15 will be more than 500,000 employees from eight other unions.

In France, several unions have also called for strike action and demonstrations on March 15 which may lead to additional disruption to services and queues at French ports not due to Border Force strike action.

Transport for London (TfL). which runs underground services to the capital精东影业 airports, are also holding strikes on March 15 resulting in no tube service.

鈥淒uring this period of industrial action, travellers should be prepared for disruption. We encourage everyone to check the latest advice from operators before travelling,鈥 said Steve Dann, Border Force chief operating officer.

Norse Atlantic already operates a daily direct service from London to New York and recently announced flights to Orlando and Fort Lauderdale launching in May.

鈥淲e have made a significant investment in our UK airline, based at Gatwick Airport, and now employ over 370 colleagues at our London base, said Bjorn Tore Larsen, CEO Norse Atlantic Airways. 鈥淚 am very pleased that we are fulfilling our pledge to create competition in the transatlantic market that will benefit consumers, stimulate business travel and lead to job creation on both sides of the Atlantic.鈥

London Gatwick Airport (LGW) will reduce the number of flights ahead of the summer peak due to staff shortages.

The number of daily flights from Gatwick will be cut to 825 in July and 850 in August. Normally, .

, Gatwick said it will be gradually increasing the maximum number of flights over time.

鈥淲e are also working closely with our airlines to avoid disruption to passengers this summer, and while more newly recruited staff will start work in coming weeks, we know it will be a busy summer,鈥 Stewart Wingate, CEO of Gatwick Airport said.

Wingate added: 鈥淗owever, it is clear that during the Jubilee week a number of companies operating at the airport struggled in particular, because of staff shortages. By taking decisive action now, we aim to help the ground handlers 鈥 and also our airlines 鈥 to better match their flying programmes with their available resources.鈥

Gatwick said it had recruited 400 new employees to maintain smooth passenger service throughout the summer.

During the first half of 2022, a total of 10 million passengers traveled through London Gatwick.

The UK精东影业 busiest airports, including Gatwick, have been facing long queues as well as numerous flight cancellations and delays due to recent staff shortages.

The aviation sector is facing staffing problems after a large number of employees were placed on furlough during the COVID-19 pandemic, and a subsequent increase in air travel demand before this year’s summer peak period.
