The US firm GE Aerospace will adopt a new cutting-edge X-ray inspection device to improve the way the company analyses metal parts, after entering an agreement with Bruker, a leading provider of analytical tools for material characterization. 

Bruker has developed a non-destructive open beam X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF) inspection device that is capable of detecting microstructural variations in metal parts.   

The new technology will allow GE Aerospace to improve the quality and detail of part inspections and help reduce the airline精东影业 costs by more accurately pinpointing repaired parts that can be reused and those that need to be replaced.听听

鈥淭his will help reduce supply chain constraints with the manufacture of new parts, improving the overall turnaround time of our engine overhauls,鈥 GE Aerospace said.  

The new process and device are already deployed in the art world to expose forgeries where detailed inspections of materials are crucial in determining whether a painting or sculpture is genuine.  

The technology will be used at GE Aerospace精东影业 new Services Technology Acceleration Center (STAC), in Springdale, Ohio, which opens in September 2024.听

鈥淲e鈥檙e excited to be opening our new STAC facility, which will serve as a major accelerator for scaling and deploying cutting edge inspection and repair processes to market,鈥 said Nicole Jenkins, Chief MRO Engineer, GE Aerospace.听听

She added: 鈥淲e have already begun moving equipment into the facility and preparing to launch our first inspection process that takes a page from the art world to improve the quality and speed of detecting chemical anomalies in metal parts.鈥 

Both artwork and metal parts in jet engines contain a chemical composition so the technology can be applied broadly and accurately to both.  

In art and conservation, XRF is used to image and see aspects of an art object精东影业 chemical composition that can tell you about the history of its origin and how to restore it or, in some cases, whether the piece is real or fake.  

For metal part inspections, the XRF provides a view of the part精东影业 chemical composition that can help a service engineer more-readily spot anomalies. 

鈥淲e are excited to extend our most advanced XRF technology into the Aerospace industry, contributing to set a new standard in non-destructive chemical analysis techniques and therefore helping to support aircraft component re-manufacturing quality,鈥 Thomas Schuelein, President of Bruker精东影业 , said.听听

GE Aerospace already adopts ultrasound, computed tomography, flash thermography, eddy current testing, fluorescent penetrant inspection, and dimensional metrology to inspect engine components, depending on what can best interrogate a given material or part.

Normally when making a purchase decision, one would always look at the best, or at least one of the best, market options available. The same logic applies in the aviation industry when aircraft精东影业 airframe builders are looking for the right engine or powerplant assembly for their aircraft.  

Considering that the engine is the primary source of power and thrust for an aircraft, its optimal performance is highly desirable. Equally, the efficiency of an aircraft relies on its engine characteristics. From one aircraft manufacturer to the next, the performance requirements for aircraft types and models differ, hence the difference in engine requirements.  

However, despite these variances, most aviation stakeholders agree that there are more notable, 鈥榮uperior鈥 players than others in the business of aircraft engine manufacturing and they include Pratt & Whitney, General Electric, Rolls-Royce, and CFM International.

Pratt & Whitney   

Pratt & Whitney, commonly referred to as P&W or PW, is an American aviation company with headquarters in East Hartford, Connecticut, United States (US). Having been founded in 1925, P&W is one of the big three commercial aviation engine manufacturers, competing with General Electric and Rolls-Royce in gas turbine engine manufacture.

General Electric, commonly known as GE, is another of the world精东影业 largest commercial engine manufacturers. Its headquarters is in Cincinnati, Ohio, US, and the company was founded in 1892.  

GE supplies engines to the world精东影业 leading aircraft manufacturers, including Airbus, Boeing, De Havilland Canada, Embraer, and COMAC. Some of the aircraft types powered by GE engines include the Boeing 737, 777, 747, 787, A320, A330, and A340, plus all the aircraft powered by engines from joint ventures of the company. For example, the previously mentioned joint venture between GE and P&W, the Engine Alliance, manufactures the GP7200 engines.  

Another successful partnership, CFM International, was forged between GE and French engine manufacturer Safran.

CFM International is a joint venture between GE and Safran. Founded in 1974, and with its headquarters in Cincinnati, Ohio, the US, the main purpose of this partnership was to support and build the CFM56 engine, a high-bypass turbofan engine. This was a combined project between Safran精东影业, formerly Snecma, M56, and GE精东影业 CF6 engines.  

To a large extent, the engine powers the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 families. The A-10 Warthog Thunderbolt II, nicknamed the 鈥榃arthog鈥, has proven itself as a mainstay within the world of military aviation, with a service history spanning over half a century. Designed to provide close air support (CAS) to ground forces, this legendary aircraft has managed to withstand the test of time.  

In this article, we’ll delve into its fascinating history, mission, performance, variants, price, current operator, and deliveries, plus the future that lies ahead for this legendary attack aircraft.

History 

The A-10 Warthog story began in the late 1960s when Fairchild Republic Corporation (now part of Northrop Grumman) designed and built an aircraft to answer the A-X program. The tender demanded an aircraft that would fill the CAS role previously held by the A-1 Skyraider during the Korean War and the Vietnam War.

Over the years, the A-10 has been through various iterations and upgrades, from the A-10A to the A-10C and several experimental models. The A-10C is the most modern version, featuring advanced avionics and weapon systems.

A-10 Warthog’s current operators and deliveries听

The A-10 has only been used by the USAF and its two reserve units, the Air Force Reserve Command (AFRC) and the Air National Guard (ANG). In 2017, there were a total of 282 operational A-10C aircraft, distributed as follows: 141 with the USAF, 55 with the AFRC, and 86 with the ANG.

Future ahead听

Following numerous rejections by Congress, the USAF finally obtained congressional approval to initiate the retirement of A-10s in 2023. The projected retirement of all A-10s is scheduled for either 2028 or 2029. Nevertheless, Congress has imposed a temporary halt on any further reductions in the active duty A-10 fleet. This pause will continue until the USAF can demonstrate that other aircraft are capable of effectively taking over CAS missions, which have traditionally been the domain of the A-10. 

This year, the Air Force is projected to retire 21 A-10s. As a result, the Air Force’s A-10 fleet will decrease from 281 to 260 aircraft.听

The United Kingdom精东影业 Serious Fraud Office (SFO) has arrested an individual after launching a criminal investigation into AOG Technics, the British supplier that is allegedly linked to the fake parts aviation scandal.

The SFO announced on December 6, 2023, that a dawn raid was carried out at an address in Greater London alongside officers from the (NGA) and material was seized.

The arrest and raid on the property represents an escalation in the AOG Technics fake parts scandal that has largely been constrained to airlines and engine manufacturers sporadically announcing which carriers have been affected.

鈥淭his investigation deals with very serious allegations of fraud involving the supply of aircraft parts, the consequences of which are potentially far reaching. The SFO is best placed to take this investigation forward vigorously and we are determined to establish the facts as swiftly as possible,鈥 Nick Ephgrave QPM, Director of the Serious Fraud Office, said.

Ryanair was the most recent airline to confirm that it has found unauthorized parts in two of its aircraft engines.

The engines of concern that AOG Technics is said to have supplied parts for are the CFM56, used in older-generation Airbus SE A320 and Boeing 737 planes, and CF6, used on cargo aircraft.

On September 7, 2023, a lawsuit against AOG Technics was filed in the UK by CFM International, a joint venture of General Electric and Safran SA, that make the CFM56 and CF6 engines.

On September 20, 2023, at the High Court in London CFM International successfully argued for AOG Technics to release documents showing sales of any CFM56 and CF6 parts.

According to the SFO, the parts were mostly sold to overseas companies that install airline parts, as well as some UK airlines, maintenance providers and parts suppliers.

The UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), the United States鈥 Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) issued alerts earlier this year to aviation businesses who may have bought or installed AOG精东影业 parts and continue to manage the safety implications involved.

精东影业 has identified eight airlines that have publicly confirmed that they have been impacted by AOG practices, namely Delta Air Lines, WestJet, American Airlines, United Airlines, Southwest Airlines, TAP, Virgin Australia Airlines and now Ryanair.

The SFO said it is working closely with the CAA and other regulators to examine the information obtained as it advances its criminal investigation into suspected fraud at this firm and determines whether there are grounds for prosecution.

UPDATED: Package holiday and travel giant TUI has denied being affected by the AOG Technics parts scandal after it was claimed a component linked to AOG was found in one of its aircraft engines.

A report by The Independent quoting a TUI statement previously claimed that the leisure carrier had been forced to remove a questionable component supplied by AOG Technics from one of its aircraft.

鈥淲e鈥檙e aware of the issue surrounding parts being supplied by a particular agency and we would like to thank the CAA for their swift notification and support,鈥 TUI said in a statement. 鈥淲e can confirm that one installed component was identified and quickly removed, and the company in question has been removed from our approved supplier list.鈥

The airline added: 鈥淲e would like to reassure customers that a full audit has taken place and no other parts supplied by the named company are present in the TUI Airways fleet.鈥

However, a senior spokesperson for TUI told 精东影业 that the airline found no dubious part on its engines.

鈥淚 can confirm that TUI doesn鈥檛 have and never had any relation to that company and that all TUI engines are OEM maintained and go through their shops,鈥 the spokesperson said in an emailed statement, adding that a plane leased to TUI did have an engine with a suspect part, but that it was removed before the airline used the plane.

What is the AOG fake parts scandal?

CFM International, which builds the engines affected by AOG精东影业 falsely certified parts, confirmed on October 4, 2023, that it had identified 95 falsified documents covering 61 CFM56 part numbers and two falsified documents covering two CF6 part numbers.   

According to the engine maker, to date it has identified 126 engines suspected of being fitted with falsely documented parts. However, it is not known if the latest TUI incident is included in that figure.  

In September 2023, CFM declared that 96 engines had been affected.   

It is understood that AOG supplied parts for CFM56 engines used in older-generation Airbus SE A320 and Boeing 737 planes.     

精东影业 has identified seven airlines that have publicly confirmed that they have been impacted by AOG practices, namely Delta Air Lines, WestJet, American Airlines, United Airlines, Southwest Airlines, TAP and Virgin Australia Airlines.听

According to the , Aer Lingus, British Airways, EasyJet, Jet 2, Ryanair, Virgin Atlantic and Wizz Air have all confirmed they have been untouched by the saga. 

On October 4, 2023, CFM, a joint venture between GE Aerospace and Safran Aircraft Engines, announced that, after extensive reviews, it had identified four instances where parts from AOG had even entered its own Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facilities, impacting 16 engines. 

The fake part that first triggered this crisis was discovered by engineers at TAP Air Portugal精东影业 maintenance subsidiary in spring 2023. 

According to an investigation by , the engineers noticed that a component for a CFM56 turbine showed signs of wear, though the paperwork showed that the part was new.  

When Safran was advised by TAP, the French company discovered that the document had been forged, and from there the scandal deepened.  

At the High Court in London on September 20, 2023, CFM successfully lobbied for AOG Technics to release documents showing sales of any CFM56 and CF6 parts. These are currently under review by CFM. 

鈥淲e are working collaboratively with operators so they can promptly remove the unauthorized parts from their engines in accordance with the recommendations issued by the regulatory agencies. We remain united with the aviation community in working to keep unapproved parts out of the global supply chain,鈥 CFM International said.  

On September 21, 2023, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued an Unapproved Parts Notification (UPN) over a bushing part supplied by AOG Technics without FAA production approval.    

In the notification, the FAA declared that associated documentation for the parts had been 鈥渇alsified鈥.    

鈥淚f these bushings are installed or found in existing aircraft parts inventories, the FAA recommends that they be removed and quarantined to prevent installation until a determination can be made regarding their eligibility for installation,鈥 the FAA精东影业 notification read.    

A spokesperson from the UK Civil Aviation Authority recently said: 鈥淲e can confirm that we are one of a number of organizations looking into this, but we are unable to comment further on ongoing investigations.鈥

CFM International has issued an update regarding the number of engines that have now been identified as containing parts sourced from British supplier AOG Technics. 

According to the engine maker, it has identified 126 engines suspected of being fitted with falsely documented parts to date. 

During extensive reviews CFM International even identified four instances where parts from AOG entered its own Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facilities, impacting 16 engines.  

In its update on October 4, 2023, CFM said the 126 affected engines reflected 鈥渓ess than one percent of the 22,600 CFM56 engines in service globally鈥. 

It added: 鈥淲e promptly informed the impacted operators, and we are removing the parts associated with AOG parts at no cost.鈥 

One instance where unverified parts entered its own facilities was through . The other three occasions involved indirect purchases from suppliers who sourced parts with falsified forms from AOG and unknowingly sold them to CFM. A further 110 instances affected engines at non-OEM facilities.  

In September 2023 CFM said that 96 engines had been affected.   

CFM also confirmed on October 4, 2023, that it is reviewing documents that AOG were forced to hand over to the engine maker due to a High Court ruling in the United Kingdom (UK) on September 20, 2023.  

A spokesperson for CFM said: 鈥淐FM is reviewing the documentation turned over by AOG Technics as part of our effort to determine the full extent of their sale of parts with fraudulent documentation. We are working collaboratively with operators so they can promptly remove the unauthorized parts from their engines in accordance with the recommendations issued by the regulatory agencies. We remain united with the aviation community in working to keep unapproved parts out of the global supply chain.鈥 

To date, CFM, a joint venture between GE Aerospace and Safran Aircraft Engines, has identified 95 falsified documents covering 61 CFM56 part numbers and two falsified documents covering two CF6 part numbers. 

It is understood that the 鈥渕ajority of the parts involved are non-serialized items like bolts, nuts, washers, dampers, seals and bushings,鈥 and CFM aren鈥檛 aware of any fraudulent documentation associated with life-limited parts. 

Delta Air Lines and WestJet are the latest airlines to confirm they have been affected by the AOG parts scandal

American Airlines, United Airlines, Southwest Airlines, TAP and Virgin Australia Airlines have all previously confirmed the same.

General Electric (GE) has delivered its 3,000th GE90 engine used to power the Boeing 777 aircraft. 

According to GE, 408 are base engines (GE90-94B), while the remaining 2,592 are growth engines.  

The engine maker also added that the GE90 was one of three choices for the 777 when Boeing initially launched the program, with the powerplant later becoming the exclusive option for the Boeing 777-300ER and Boeing 777-200LR aircraft. 

鈥淲e owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to Boeing, our GE90 customers around the world, and all of the dedicated workers who have made this marvel of an engine one of aviation精东影业 great success stories,鈥 Nate Hoening, the GE90 program manager, said. 

The company also shared some of the GE90 engine精东影业 鈥渇irsts鈥, including that it was the first engine with carbon fiber composite fan blades, as well as the first to be certified for Extended-range Twin-engine Operation Performance Standards (ETOPS).  

ETOPS allowed GE90-powered aircraft, like the Boeing 777, to operate routes with no diversionary airport within one hour of flight at the normal one-engine cruise speed. 

The company delivered the 1,000th GE90 engine to Emirates in November 2009. Meanwhile, the 2,000th GE90 was delivered in December 2014. 

“It took 11 years to build 500 GE90 engines, and in a little more than three years, we doubled deliveries to 1000,” Tony Aiello, the then-general manager of the GE90 Product line, said in November 2009. 

A more powerful derivative of the GE90, the GE9X, will be the only choice for the Boeing 777X. 

Brian West, the chief financial officer (CFO) and executive vice president of Finance at Boeing, said that the 777X is expected to enter service in 2025 when he spoke during the Jefferies Industrials Conference in early September 2023.

GE Aerospace and magniX have revealed the liveries of the hybrid electric aircraft they will fly as part of NASA精东影业 Electrified Powertrain Flight Demonstration (EFPD) project. 

The unveiling was made at the in Wisconsin, United States (US) the world精东影业 largest air show, on July 25, 2023.听听

Under the EPFD, GE Aerospace is developing a megawatt-class hybrid electric powertrain for ground and flight tests in the middle of this decade.听

For the hybrid electric test flights, GE Aerospace is partnering with Boeing and its subsidiary Aurora Flight Sciences using a modified Saab 340B aircraft powered by GE精东影业 CT7 engines.听

The flight test campaigns will be based out of Aurora Flight Sciences鈥 facilities, including in Manassas, Virginia. 

For its demonstration, magniX is partnering with AeroTEC and Air Tindi to test its hybrid powertrain installed on a modified De Havilland Dash 7 aircraft.听听听

The flight test campaigns will be based out of the AeroTEC Flight Test Center in Moses Lake, Washington. 

Each industry partnership will assist with integrating the electric aircraft propulsion systems into the flight demonstrators, as well as help with overall design, modification, and flight tests of the aircraft. 

The project精东影业 goal is to accelerate the transition of hybrid propulsion systems with megawatt (MW) levels of power to short-haul turboprop aircraft carrying 30-70 passengers and regional single-aisle commercial airliners carrying up to 180 passengers. 

EPFD will also inform the development of new standards for next-generation hybrid electric aircraft. 

NASA is targeting at least two flight demonstrations within the next five years to help introduce electric aircraft propulsion (EAP) systems to the US commercial fleet within the 2030-2035 timeframe.听

GE Aerospace has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) to produce fighter jet engines for the Indian Air Force. 

The deal, announced on Thursday, June 22, 2023, will see India精东影业 Tejas Light Combat Aircraft Mk2 engine fitted with GE Aerospace精东影业 F414 engine.  

The agreement includes the potential joint production of GE Aerospace精东影业 F414 engines in India. GE Aerospace is continuing to work with the United States (US) government to receive the necessary export authorization for this.   

The deal has been announced while India精东影业 Prime Minister Narendra Modi is making an official visit to the US, as the two countries look to strengthen defense cooperation.

In addition to potentially generating new work in India, a number of US facilities that currently support work on the F414 engine will see additional volume as a result of today精东影业 announcement. 

Back in 1986, GE began working with the Aeronautical Development Agency and HAL to support the development of India精东影业 Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) with F404 engines.  

Subsequently GE Aerospace精东影业 F404 and F414 have been part of the development and production programs of LCA Mk1 and LCA Mk2.  

In total, 75 F404 engines have been delivered and another 99 are on order for LCA Mk1A.  

Eight F414 engines have been delivered as part of an ongoing development program for LCA Mk2. 

The latest agreement will advance GE Aerospace精东影业 earlier commitment to build 99 engines for the Indian Air Force as part of the LCA Mk2 program.听听听

To date, more than 1,600 F414 engines have been delivered globally.听

General Electric (GE) Aerospace would be keen to provide potential customers of the stretched Airbus A220, known as the A220-500, with an additional engine option. 

to The Air Current at the Paris Air Show, GE Aerospace Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Larry Culp said that the company is considering whether to provide engines for the Airbus A220-500 via its CFM International joint venture with France精东影业 Safran Aircraft Engines. 

鈥淚 don鈥檛 think we would, at this point, rule anything in or out,鈥 added Culp. 

Currently, the only engine option for the Airbus A220-100 and A220-300 is the PW1500G, which has been troubling operators with unexpectedly long turnaround times (TAT) during engine shop visits in the past few months. 

Meanwhile, CFM International provides engines for the Airbus A320ceo, A320neo, Boeing 737 NextGeneration (NG), 737 MAX, and COMAC C919 aircraft families. The CFM56 powers the older generation aircraft, namely the A320ceo and 737 NGs, while the LEAP family provides propulsion to A320neo, 737 MAX, and COMAC C919s. 

Airbus Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Guillaume Faury told FlightGlobal in an that once the manufacturer would offer the stretched Airbus A220 variant, it 鈥渃ould call for dual-sourcing of engines at the right point in time, if engine manufacturers are ready to go there鈥. Faury added that providing two options for airlines to pick from is done primarily for strategic and contractual reasons, rather than to reduce supply chain-related risks. 

Previously, an Airbus spokesperson confirmed in a statement to 精东影业 that the manufacturer will launch the A220-500, saying that the question is 鈥渨hen and not if鈥. 

However, the plane maker精东影业 current priority is ramping up the production rate of the program, and at the same time ensuring that there are no issues with the A220精东影业 supply chain.
