The Russian President, Vladimir Putin, has hit it out at the country精东影业 reliance on foreign-made aircraft during the combined 鈥楧irect Line鈥 Q&A session and year-end press conference.聽

Speaking in front of a selected audience and viewers at home, the Russian leader said that the market is currently “overloaded” with planes manufactured by Airbus and Boeing.

To rectify Russia精东影业 over-reliance on foreign-made aircraft, Putin has announced a plan to build 1,000 passenger planes domestically by 2030.

“We need to develop our own aircraft production [鈥 and we plan to make more than 1,000 of our own airplanes by 2030,鈥 Putin said.

According to Russian news outlet , Putin plans to produce Irkut MC-21 passenger jets and switch over to Russian engines for certain aircraft.

On December 14, 2023, the 鈥楧irect Line鈥 Q&A session and year-end press conference were held together rather than separately as in previous years.

According to presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov, this was to enable Putin to summarize the year精东影业 results in all areas at once.

The Russian aviation industry has struggled to operate effectively since Western sanctions were put in place after Putin launched an invasion of Ukraine.

Russian airlines have been unable to legally obtain the Boeing and Airbus parts that are desperately needed to keep their aircraft in good order.

It is understood that, until now, Russia has relied on the black market to source parts and has even set out plans to manufacture replica Boeing and Airbus components.

Russia will push ahead with its civil aviation programs to build the MC-21 and Sukhoi Superjet 100 (SSJ100) passenger planes, in spite of international sanctions.

The country精东影业 deputy prime minister, Yuri Borisov, visited a production site of Aviastar, part of the state-owned Rostec corporation, on March 16, 2022.

鈥淭he key task is to move the implementation of these programs to an earlier date,鈥 Borisov commented according to a statement from the Russian government released after the site visit.

The MC-21, built by Irkut Corporation, is a single-aisle passenger jet designed to carry between 165 and 211 passengers in a single-class configuration.

The aircraft is first expected to be operated by Aeroflot unit Rossiya, which had said in July 2021 that it hoped to start operations in summer 2022.

The SSJ100 regional jet began flying commercially in 2011 and can carry between 87 and 103 passengers.

Russia精东影业 aerospace and aviation industry has been cut off by international sanctions following Russia精东影业 invasion of Ukraine. International manufacturers have said they will stop providing support and services for aircraft, while lessors are trying to cancel contracts and retrieve planes operated by Russian airlines.

Borisov said the situation for civil aviation is complicated, because the projects were initially planned for international cooperation, but he said work had not been halted.

鈥淭here is no pause in the work of enterprises and there will not be. Everyone continues to work. Let me emphasize once again that we are speeding up the implementation of our flagship projects MS-21 and SSJ-100.鈥

Irkut is part of United Aircraft Corporation, which is in turn majority owned by Rostec. Sukhoi is also part of UAC.

Borisov also said that Russia was also considering boosting production of the wide-body Ilyushin Il-96 and the narrow-body Tupolev Tu-214. The two aircraft are currently produced only in small numbers for certain customers.

The first serial production Irkut MC-21, the latest airliner from Russia, has completed its maiden flight.

The aircraft is the first of the type to feature domestically made composite wings and engines.

The flight occurred on December 25, 2021, in the Irkutsk Northwest airport. It went smoothly, and the aircraft performed as expected, state conglomerate Rostec, which owns United Aircraft Corporation 鈥 the parent company of Irkut 鈥 announced.

鈥淭he first flight of the aircraft with the wing made of Russian composites proves: we did everything right, the MC-21 program is consistently and steadily moving forward, despite the sanctions and the unfair competition,鈥 Denis Manturov, Russian minister of industry and trade, is quoted in Rostec press .

The first prototype of the MC-21 completed its maiden flight in 2017. In December 2020 it flew with Russian-made Aviadvigatel PD-14 engines that replaced Pratt & Whitney PW1000G turbofans initially planned for the model.

The assembly of the first MC-21 with domestically-produced wings began in early 2021. The wings were fitted in July of the same year.

According to Rostec, the MC-21 is nearing the end of the certification process. After testing, the first serial production aircraft is going to fly with Rossiya, a subsidiary of Aeroflot. The delivery is scheduled to September 2022.

Irkut MC-21 is a narrow-body airliner under development at UAC, similar to the Boeing 737 MAX and the Airbus A320neo. It is geared towards the Russian domestic market, with the country精东影业 airlines ordering over 150 aircraft.

Rossiya, a subsidiary of Aeroflot, will take delivery of the first Irkut MC-21 airliner in September 2022, making it the launch customer for the new aircraft.

According to Russian news agency , which quoted an unnamed source within the airline, the first aircraft is set to be delivered in September, with a second arriving in November, and two further aircraft due in December 2022.

The news was confirmed by Aeroflot精东影业 CEO, Mikhail Poluboyarinov in an  to the state news agency TASS.

In contrast with some prototypes, the latest MC-21s will be fitted with Russian-made composite wings and Aviadvigatel PD-14 turbofan engines, made to replace the foreign-made parts that were initially planned for the type.

The first MC-21 prototype took off on its maiden flight in 2017, and the aircraft has been performing tests ever since.

The United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) initially planned to start delivering the aircraft in 2019. However, this was delayed numerous times. The aircraft is also yet to be certified by the Russian aviation authority Rosaviatsiya, but current plans suggest that certification will be completed by the end of December 2021.

to Aviation21.ru, the aircraft is ready to be delivered to Rossiya, having exited the assembly line on November 30, 2021. The aircraft was then transferred to the flight-testing division of the Irkutsk aviation plant.

Irkut MC-21 is a narrow-body airliner under development at UAC, intended to rival the Boeing 737 MAX and the Airbus A320neo. However, the aircraft appears to have been built for the Russian market, with almost all orders signed by Aeroflot or other Russian airlines.

The aircraft will be available in two variants: the MC-21-200 and the MC-21-300, and boasts a passenger capacity of 132 and 163 two-class seats and a range of 6,400 kilometers (3,500 nautical miles) and 6,000 kilometers (3,200 nautical miles) respectively.

While visiting the MAKS 2021 Russian air show, a delegation of the cargo group Volga-Dnepr discussed with Irkut the potential to develop a freighter version of the upcoming Russian airliner MC-21.

鈥淎mid the capacity constraints, emerging demand for freighters and increase of cargo volumes worldwide Irkut Corporation is in favourable position to commence the freighter program,鈥 the carrier wrote in a statement. 鈥淰olga-Dnepr Group might become the possible launch customer of the MC-21-200 freighter version.鈥

The MC-21 is a medium-haul plane capable of carrying between 132 and 211 passengers 鈥 a prized market segment. It is destined to replace the Tu-154 and Tu-204 in Russia and aims to compete on the global market with two best-sellers, the Boeing 737 and the Airbus A320.

Deliveries are slated to start by the end of 2021, according to the trade and industry minister Denis Manturov, with its launch customer being the Russian flag carrier Aeroflot. So far, the airliner has attracted 175 firm orders, in their vast majority from Russian airlines. No order was placed during MAKS 2021.

Meanwhile, four Russian carriers have placed orders and options for the Sukhoi Superjet regional aircraft during aishow, for a total of 58 aircraft.

The first composite wings made entirely of Russian composites were installed on an 袦小-21-300 destined to be delivered to Aeroflot.

On July 14, 2021, the Irkutsk Aviation Plant, part of the United Aircraft Corporation, finished installing the left-wing panel to the fuselage of an 袦小-21-300 airliner, completing the assembly of the first composite wings made entirely of Russian material. The right-wing panel and center section had been installed earlier.

The wing panels and center section are made of Russian polymer composite materials by AeroComposite-Ulyanovsk. 鈥淭he use of rigid and lightweight composite materials made it possible to develop a wing with a high aspect ratio and improve the aerodynamics of MC-21, which in turn allowed increasing the diameter of the fuselage to make it more comfortable for passengers,鈥 explained Irkut in a statement. “The wing is manufactured using unique vacuum infusion technology, patented in Russia.”

The next stage of the assembly will be to integrate the aircraft systems. The aircraft is intended for delivery to its launch customer, the Russian flag carrier Aeroflot. Deliveries are slated to start by the end of 2021, according to Russian trade and industry minister Denis Manturov.

The MC-21 is a medium-haul plane capable of carrying between 132 and 211 passengers, a prized market segment. It is destined to replace the Tu-154 and Tu-204 in Russia and will compete with two best-sellers, the Boeing 737 and the Airbus A320.

The program has been plagued with delays that the Russian government mostly attributed to American sanctions. Indeed, the MC-21 composite wing production has been quite challenging. Delivery of parts coming from American Hexcel and Japanese Toray Industries to the Russian company Aerocomposit (part of UAC) was abandoned.

The first MC-21-300 wing made of Russian composite materials was delivered to Irkut, at its assembly line of Irkutsk Aviation Plant.

The 17,5-meter-long wing panel was made by the Russian company JSC AeroComposite, using a domestic fiber developed among others by Moscow State University and Rosatom.

鈥淭he technology used to produce large-scale wing box panels based on infusion technology was developed by AeroComposite and patented in Russia,鈥 Irkut said in a statement. 鈥淭he use of strong and lightweight composite materials resulted in the development high aspect ratio wing and improving the aircraft aerodynamic performance and at the same time increasing  the fuselage diameter.鈥

Russia had to develop its own composite materials after delivery of parts coming from US Hexcel and Japanese Toray Industries were abandoned over soured diplomatic relationships.

The part should soon be assembled on the first MC-21-300 to be delivered to its launch customer, the Russian flag carrier Aeroflot.

In February 2021, the Aviadvigatel PD-14 turbofan engine slated to power the MC-21 airliner was found compliant with ICAO emission standards.

The first prototype of the new Russian airliner MC-21-300 fitted with Aviadvigatel PD-14 engines successfully finished its first flight test.

According to the Rostec press release, the flight took off from the Irkutsk aviation plant airstrip and lasted 1 hour 25 minutes on December 15, 2020.

鈥淭his flight is a joint result of two of the most important Russian civilian aviation programs 鈥 the MC-21 airplane and the PD-14 engine. Thanks to the efforts of the scientists, manufacturers, engineers and workers an airliner of the new generation is being created. It will return our country to the highest league of the world of aviation,鈥  Sergey Chemezov, the CEO of Rostec, is quoted in the press release.

All earlier flights of the airplane, including its maiden flight in May 2017, were conducted with Pratt & Whitney PW1000G engines.

The Aviadvigatel PD-14 turbofan engine has been developed by Rostec, Russian state-owned corporation, since 2012. It is a further development of the PS-90, the engine that powered the majority of Soviet and Russian airliners, such as the Tu-204 and the Il-96, since the 80s and 90s.

The PD-14 is being developed specifically for the MC-21. It has a bypass ratio of 8.5:1, can generate 14.0 tf (31,000 lbf) of thrust and is said to be 15% more efficient than its predecessor the PS-90.

According to Russian minister of industry and trade Denis Manturov, half of the first 630 serial MC-21s are going to be equipped with PD-14s, with the rest being powered by PW1000Gs.

Flight testing of the PD-14 onboard Il-76LL flying laboratory began in 2015.

The Irkut MC-21 is a new Russian narrow-body airliner set to compete with mainline aircraft like the Boeing 737 and the Airbus A320. It is being developed by United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) and is currently expected to enter service in 2021.
