Emirates has announced that it has teamed up with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and Airbus to launch an enhanced Competency-Based Training and Assessment (CBTA) program for the A350 aircraft type rating, as the airline prepares for the delivery of 65 A350s from mid-2024.

According to Emirates, the advanced pilot training programme uses CBTA training methodology that combines IATA精东影业 principles and documentation, the carrier精东影业 operational expertise and resources, and Airbus鈥 CBTA training experience on the A350 that spans over 10 years.

The airline has said that an initial batch of 256 pilots will be trained as part of the new course at Emirates鈥 Training college in Dubai, starting from July 2024. The program will run in two phases, including 20 days of simulator training and evaluation over 15 separate sessions.

The A350 CBTA program is driven by pilot competency and behavior, using the CBTA training philosophy to enable instructors to assess the pilots during training and seek immediate improvements in their performance.

The program is one of the ways in which Emirates is gearing up for the entry of its new A350 into service. Other departments within the airline are also preparing for the debut of A350 operations, including their Service Delivery and Engineering teams.

鈥淭he tailored CBTA programme for the A350 supports the integration of the new aircraft to be inducted into our fleet, with 1,000 pilots set to complete the A350 type rating course,鈥 Capt. Bader Al Marzooqi, Emirates鈥 Senior Vice President, Flight Training said in a statement.

鈥淭his latest initiative is part of Emirates鈥 commitment to deliver the highest standards of service and comfort while supporting our operational growth and expansion,鈥 Al Maqzooqi added.

Capt. St茅phan Labrucherie, Airbus Head of Flight Training Worldwide said: 鈥淥ur partnership with IATA and Emirates ensures that Emirates鈥 pilots receive the most comprehensive and effective training, supporting the smooth entry into service of the A350 worldwide.”聽

A pilot for the Yakstars aerobatic display team has been killed at the Beja Air Show in Portugal after colliding with a teammate while flying in formation.

The tragedy occurred on June 2, 2024, in front of thousands of spectators attending the air show which is organized by the Portuguese Air Force and held at Air Base No. 11 in Beja.听听

In footage captured of the incident six Yakovlev Yak-52 can be seen flying in tight formation before one of the aircraft appears to collide with another aircraft.

As white smoke streams from the Yak-52, the pilot appeared to temporarily regain control before climbing steeply and then rapidly descending towards the ground.

As distressed spectators look on, the aircraft crashes, followed by a large explosion.

The other Yakovlev Yak-52 involved in the collision escaped safely and initiated an emergency landing.

The Portuguese Air Force said the collision took place at 16:05 local time during an aerial demonstration by the Iberian Yakstars comprised of Portuguese and Spanish pilots.

The deceased pilot was confirmed as a Spanish national who is understood to have lived in Sig眉eiro in Spain.

鈥淚t is with an enormous feeling of regret and consternation that the Air Force offers its greatest condolences to the family, friends and acquaintances, being deeply in solidarity at this time of loss,鈥 the Portuguese Air Force said in a statement.聽

The other pilot involved in the incident was taken to Beja Hospital due to suffering a slight injury and confirmed to be a Portuguese national.

The Portuguese Air Force added that the deceased pilot crashed outside the air base’s perimeter, but there were no injuries on the ground.

The Office for the Prevention and Investigation of Aircraft Accidents and Railway Accidents (GPIAAF) said that an investigation into the crash had already begun, and a team is already present at the air base.

Following the accident, the Beja Air Show was closed.听听

A former United States (US) fighter pilot has been told by an Australian magistrate judge that he is eligible for extradition to the US over claims that he helped to train members of the Chinese military.听听

Daniel Duggan appeared in Downing Centre Local Court, Sydney, on May 25, 2024, where Magistrate Daniel Reiss concluded that the former marine pilot met the conditions of a US extradition order.聽

Duggan精东影业 fate now rests in the hands of the Australian Attorney General Mark Dreyfus, who must give the final approval for the extradition before it can take place.

Duggan, who will be forced to wait in custody for this decision, has up to 15 days to launch an appeal against the judgement.

According to , the 55-year-old was detained in Australia and accused of breaching arms trafficking and money laundering laws by training Chinese pilots in South Africa between 2009 and 2012.听听

Duggan was arrested in New South Wales 19 months ago, after returning from China to join his family in Australia and has been detained since, according to .听听

The US indictment alleges that Duggan taught Chinese fighter pilots to land aircraft on carriers.

Duggan denies all claims made against him and the allegations that he trained Chinese pilots have not yet been tested in a court of law.

Duggan精东影业 supporters and family members insist that he is the victim of geopolitics, at a time when relations between China and the US are particularly strained.

鈥淭his was no place to battle. There was no opening in the local court for my husband to run his case. Today was simply about ticking boxes, and it is time to move to the next stage. A Southwest Airlines captain has filed a complaint against the airline after he was sacked for speaking to passengers rather than flying the B737 aircraft during an engine fire emergency in 2023.

David Legeros was in command of the B737-700 aircraft that took off from William P. Hobby International Airport (HOU) in Houston, Texas on August 15, 2023. The flight was headed for Cancun International Airport (CUN) in Mexico.

Less than 20 minutes later, the aircraft returned to Houston after flames spewed from the aircraft精东影业 right-hand engine.

Although the plane was able to land safely and no injuries were reported, showed that instead of taking control of the flight, Legeros chose to let the First Officer fly while he communicated with Houston air traffic control for a return emergency landing.

Moreover, the court papers state that Legeros then addressed passengers in Spanish and English to try and reassure them that the situation was under control.

According to a report by , Legeros stated that it was the decision to let the first officer fly during the diversion that 鈥渓anded him in hot water鈥 with Southwest management because the airline精东影业 standard operating procedures mandate that the captain should take control of the aircraft during an emergency situation.

Legeros reasoned that if he had taken control of the plane, the aircraft could have suddenly jolted and detached the burning engine, leaving the risk of it falling to the ground.

鈥淗ad SWA (Southwest Airlines) decided to reward Mr Legeros, or even ignore him, following his heroics, this story would be over, but SWA decided to punish him,鈥 the petition states.

The court documents also allege that Southwest management had criticized Legeros for speaking Spanish to the passengers, despite claims that the majority of the flight passengers were Hispanic.

When investigations concluded on Flight WN307, the airline found that Legeros was engaged in serious misconduct, and, according to documents, was 鈥渇orced鈥 to sign a 鈥楲ast Chance Agreement鈥.

鈥淏ased on the pretense of some 鈥榮erious misconduct,鈥 but in reality due to his status as a person of color, SWA [ Southwest Airlines] has been looking to push Mr. Legeros out,鈥 the complaint alleges.

While Legeros was still grounded from duty, he was advised that the airline needed to conduct a 鈥楩itness for Duty鈥 psychological evaluation in January 2024.

Legeros claimed he could not attend the initial evaluation due to his father being in hospital.

The lawsuit claims that Southwest now wants him to attend a meeting with its Chief Pilot where he would be allowed to resign or be terminated.

Legeros is seeking injunctive relief to prevent Southwest from compelling a psychological exam or the Fitness for Duty evaluation.

A Japan Airlines flight from Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) to Tokyo精东影业 Haneda Airport (HND) had to be canceled after its pilot got drunk and engaged in disorderly conduct at the airline精东影业 layover hotel in Dallas.

According to Japanese news outlet the 49-year old captain engaged in 鈥渄isruptive behavior鈥 at the layover hotel bar, prompting staff to call local police who then questioned the pilot and warned him not to cause further problems.

The Mainichi reported that the pilot had dined with other crew members at the hotel when they arrived in the city. The dinner started at 18:00 local time and continued until 02:00, when the pilot started to act in a disorderly manner.

Japan Airlines told the news outlet that it decided to cancel flight JL 11 on April 24, 2024 because it could not find a replacement pilot for the flight, which was scheduled to depart at 11:00 local time.

The airline made alternative arrangements for the 157 passengers to get to Tokyo.

An airline spokesperson told Business Insider via email that the decision to cancel the flight was due to the need to assess the captain’s physical and mental well-being, and not because the pilot was under the influence at the time of the flight.

“It is true that the captain consumed alcohol,” the spokesperson said, adding that “there was a sufficient interval between alcohol consumption and the scheduled duty time.”

This is not the first incident where an on-duty pilot became inebriated before a flight. In February 2019, an American Airlines pilot was arrested in Manchester, United Kingdom, for consuming alcohol over the prescribed limit before a flight. In March 2024, a Delta Air Lines pilot was jailed in the UK after failing an airport breathalyzer and blood test prior to his flight.

Low-cost carrier easyJet has launched a new online pilot aptitude test as the airline looks to find the next generation of aviators.

The test is part of a pan-European recruitment campaign designed to expel the myths about the type of people that can become pilots and encourage more applicants from underrepresented groups.

The new test is being rolled out online targeting female audiences, who can logon to the easyJet website to take part in a 鈥樷 and 鈥楽鈥 assessment.

The online test assesses some of the key skills required to become an airline pilot and has been designed to encourage more people to consider a flying career.

EasyJet conducted a poll across the United Kingdom (UK) and discovered that 57% believe that a university degree is required to become a pilot and 80% think that 20/20 vision is a necessity 鈥 neither of which is true.

In fact, 50% of British people asked had no idea what qualifications were needed to become an airline pilot and learn to fly a commercial jet.

The new campaign kicked off on April 3, 2024, in Central London where real life easyJet pilot Captain Sarah Ackerley was strapped to a huge billboard to answer questions about flying passenger planes for a living.

More than half (59%) of British adults surveyed still believe there are misconceptions that a pilot is a job for a man.

鈥淭ackling gender stereotyping within aviation has been a long-standing mission for easyJet and I鈥檓 excited to be part of this latest campaign that精东影业 allowing people to get a real insight into what skills are really important to do this job and encourage more women into the profession,鈥 Captain Ackerley said.

She added: 鈥淚t精东影业 an immensely rewarding career that I鈥檓 proud to champion and I hope by more people taking our new interactive test, they can challenge themselves to discover a talent they never knew they had and I hope to see them flying with us in the future.鈥

2024 Pilot Training Program

The test and billboard were launched ahead of the opening of easyJet精东影业 2024 Pilot Training Program in the coming weeks.

The airline精东影业 pilot training program takes aspiring pilots with little to no flying experience to operating a commercial passenger jet in around two years with its intensive, industry-leading training course.

To apply to easyJet精东影业 Pilot Training Program, aspiring pilots need to be aged 18 or over by the time they begin training and have a minimum of five General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) of Grade C or above (or equivalent), including mathematics, science, and English language 鈥 no higher qualifications or degrees are required.

To register interest for easyJet精东影业 Pilot Training Program or to simply find out more, visit

7.5% of easyJet精东影业 pilots in in the UK are women, compared to the UK industry average of 6.5% with around 300 women including 99 captains now flying for the airline.

A pilot for the Portuguese airline TAP Air Portugal has been captured battling with the infamous swirling Madeira winds while trying to land at Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport (FNC).

Madeira is famous for its strong winds, which can challenge even the most experienced pilots during their final approach. This makes it an ideal location for videographers interested in capturing thrilling footage. At the meteorological station in Madeira Airport, the average wind speed is 22.76 knots (42.1 kilometers per hour).

On March 26, 2024, a TAP Airbus A321neo was carrying out a repositioning flight from Porto Santo Airport (PXO), so as well as managing testing weather conditions the pilots were also contending with a much lighter aircraft than usual due to no passengers being onboard.

In the one-minute and 33-second clip videoed by Madeira Airport Spotting, the Airbus A321neo initially appears steady on its approach, but a small wobble escalates into something more.听听

Around 40 seconds into the video, the wind picks up, which can clearly be heard on the camera精东影业 microphone, causing the narrowbody jet to begin to sway from side to side.听听

As the A321neo grows more challenging to control against the winds, the aircraft精东影业 nose begins to tip downwards.聽

At the point of almost landing, the aft end of the aircraft rises up, leading to the A321neo landing with its nose first.听听

During a few more concerning seconds, the aircraft bounces from right to left before the pilot eventually brings the situation under control.聽

After the incident became public, some argued that the pilots should have initiated a go-around.

A Boliviana de Aviaci贸n pilot has been praised by the carrier for maintaining control of an aircraft after it struck a pack of dogs on the runway during takeoff.

The Boliviana de Aviaci贸n Boeing 737-800 was preparing to take off for La Paz El Alto International Airport (LPB) on March 26, 2026, when the unusual incident occurred.聽

According to a statement from the Bolivian flag carrier, the Boeing 737 pilot was at a 鈥渃ritical moment鈥 during takeoff when the aircraft struck the dogs.

The aircraft, registered CP-3138, was due to land at Cochabamba Jorge Wilstermann Airport (CBB) but suffered damage to the landing gear and other parts of the plane.

Local media reported that as many as 12 dogs made it onto the runway at the time of the collision, while witnesses on the plane said they were thrown forward in their seats as the aircraft braked hard.

鈥淲e reiterate our highest commitment to the operational safety and well-being of all travelers,鈥 Boliviana de Aviaci贸n said in a statement.

Following the incident passengers were deplaned and the aircraft was towed away for the damage to be assessed.听听

Six Boliviana de Aviaci贸n flights were subsequently delayed as the airline tried to resume services.

鈥淎n evaluation will be carried out with the operational area to determine where these dogs could have entered and take corrective measures,鈥 a representative of NAABOL (Bolivian Air Navigation and Airports) advised local media.

No details about the condition of the dogs have been released.聽

A Delta Air Lines pilot who was stopped from flying after he turned up at Edinburgh Airport (EDI) to captain a transatlantic flight drunk and with just under one and a half bottle of J盲germeister in his hand luggage has been jailed in Scotland.

At Edinburgh Sheriff Court on March 19, 2024, Sheriff Alison Stirling sentenced Lawrence Russell Jr to 10 months in jail after the Delta Air Lines captain pled guilty to reporting for duty as a pilot while exceeding the prescribed blood alcohol limit.聽

The court was told that the proportion of alcohol found in the 63-year-old pilot精东影业 blood was 鈥渘ot less than 49 milligrams of alcohol in 100 milliliters of blood, which exceeded the prescribed limit of 20 milligrams鈥. The blood alcohol limit for car drivers in the United Kingdom is 50 milligrams.

Details of the events that led to Russell精东影业 arrest on June 16, 2023, were made public in court Sheriff Alison Stirling during sentencing.

“I’m terrified”

Russell was due to captain a transatlantic Boeing 767 flight from Edinburgh to John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in New York, at 10:35 local time and arrived at 09:15 dressed in his Delta uniform and wearing a company lanyard and crew pass.

He was stopped by security after an X-ray machine alerted staff to the pilot精东影业 hand luggage and on inspection it was found to contain two bottles of J盲germeister, one of which was open and just under half full.

Due to Russell being dressed in uniform the police were called and upon arrival the pilot advised officers that he had not drunk recently, but that you had been drinking the previous evening.

Russell failed a breathalyzer test at the airport and a subsequent blood test when he was taken to Livingston Police Station.

When told by officers that he was being charged, Russell responded, 鈥淚鈥檓 terrified鈥.

The court heard that since the incident Russell was diagnosed with severe alcohol use disorder and with support of the Talbott Recovery Skyline Program was now in remission.

Talbott Recovery Skyline Program reported to the court that Russell lost his job and was now on disability.

Russell showed remorse that the flight was cancelled due to his behavior and for the inconvenience the episode had on passengers and his former employer.

The court revealed that Russell was caught driving under the influence of alcohol as a student, and that there was a more recent occurrence of the offence too.

Russell was said to have had a good upbringing, and had the support of his wife, two sons and Delta.听听

鈥淗igh potential for serious harm鈥澛

鈥淒espite the presumption in Scotland against imposing short sentences, custody is the only appropriate disposal, having regard to the serious nature of your offending.  Your offence showed a high level of culpability, and a high potential for serious harm to have been done,鈥 Sheriff Alison Stirling said.

The sentence of 10 months was reduced from the headline sentence of 15 months due to the pilot pleading guilty at the earliest opportunity.

Reasons for the sentence included punishment, protection of the public and deterrence of others who may be inclined to commit similar offences.

The court was told that once Russell completes his sentence, he will apply for a new Aviation Medical Certificate, and he expected that he would be re-instated as a pilot.听听

A student pilot is facing federal charges after he allegedly made multiple attempts to open the cockpit door of a Boeing 737 aircraft he was flying on as a passenger.

Nathan Jones, 19, was aboard Alaska Airlines Flight 322 from San Diego International Airport (SAN) to Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) on March 3, 2024.

According to court documents reviewed by several US media outlets, Jones left his seat multiple times and made three separate attempts to go to the front of the aircraft and open the cockpit door.

Coincidentally, the flight had eight off-duty San Diego Police Department officers who were headed to the east coast of the US for training.

Flight attendants requested assistance from the law enforcers, who restrained Jones and placed him in flex cuffs and sat on either side of the student pilot for the remainder of the flight.

According to an affidavit filed by Federal Air Marshal Thomas G. Pattinson, when flight attendants asked Jones what he was doing, the defendant allegedly said he was 鈥渢esting鈥 them.

Alaska Airlines confirmed the incident to CNN and said that Jones tried to access the cockpit in a 鈥渘onviolent manner鈥 and appeared confused. Jones has since been banned from flying the airline.

Jones鈥 defense lawyer said in a statement to NBC News that he is 鈥渧ery concerned鈥 about his client精东影业 mental health and wants Jones to be psychologically evaluated before any kind of trial.

Jones has been charged with interference with a flight crew, which carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison.
