Air Canada pilots staged a protest at Toronto精东影业 Pearson International Airport (YTO) on September 29, 2023 as negotiations with the Canadian flag carrier continue on.

The Canada Air Line Pilots Association began the talks in June 2023, just one day after fellow union members at WestJet ratified a new collective agreement.

Representing more than 5,000 pilots, Air Canada精东影业 union is demanding job security, safety and better wages.

The Canadian pilots are also stressing the fact that their US counterparts are getting better pay and benefits.

鈥淭here was a point in time back in 2013 when we were pretty comparable 鈥 almost even 鈥 with our fellow counterparts at United. But starting next year, United Airlines pilots will earn 92% more,鈥 head of Air Canada精东影业 contingent Charlene Hudy told Canadian media outlet .

Pilots for US airlines such as United Airlines, Delta Air Lines and American Airlines, secured agreements that included four-year pay hikes ranging from 34% to 40%.

The  Canada Air Line Pilots Association said that the picket is intended to 鈥渟howcase our unity and resolve, as well as our loyalty to our fellow Canadians, who deserve no less than a reliable aviation network with experienced pilots in the flight deck鈥.

The picket was captured on video and uploaded on social media TikTok, where hundreds of pilots can be seen lined up at the entrance of Toronto Airport as a sign of solidarity.

Most professional protest

Reuters reported that Air Canada’s pilots have received a 2% wage increase per year since 2014. In March the country’s inflation rate was running at 4.3%, a 19-month low.

Ryanair CEO Michael O’Leary was smacked in the face with two cream pies as he stood outside the European Commission’s headquarters in Brussels, Belgium on September 7, 2023.聽

Two female environmental activists tossed the pies while shouting, 鈥淲elcome in Belgium!鈥 and 鈥淪top the pollution from your f* planes!鈥

O’Leary was in Brussels to announce Ryanair’s winter schedule and to deliver a petition to Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. The petition aimed to protect so-called 鈥榦verflights鈥 in Europe, which are affected by EU rules preventing airlines from flying over countries when local air traffic control staff are on strike.

He was getting ready to pose for a picture with a life-size cardboard cutout of the Commission President before handing over a petition signed by 1.5 million Ryanair customers when the pie-throwers appeared. O’Leary joked that he had never had “such a warm welcome”.

“Unfortunately, they were environmentalists, and the cream was artificial. I invite the passengers to come to Ireland, where the cream is better,鈥 he later added.

Ryanair’s social media also played along, suggesting that passengers were “so happy with our routes and petition that they鈥檙e celebrating with cake.”

鈥淲e鈥檝e got tasty low fares!鈥 the company wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter).

Low-cost air carrier Ryanair introduced carbon offsetting programs in July 2021, giving passengers a way to offset their flight emissions through such schemes as the 鈥楥arbon Calculator鈥 and the 鈥楶artial Contribution鈥 option.

However, in January 2023, the low-cost air carrier had to revise its carbon offset scheme after the Netherlands Authorities for Consumers and Markets (ACM) found its claims regarding sustainability to be misleading.

Protesters in Haiti have reached Port-au-Prince精东影业 Aeroport International Toussaint Louverture (PAP) in an effort to meet the country精东影业 Prime Minister, Ariel Henry, on January 26, 2023.

The protesters, mostly Haitian police, reportedly blocked the streets of the city and forced their way into Port-au-Prince airport to catch Henry, who was returning from a summit in Argentina.

The protesters initially stormed Henry精东影业 residence, and upon learning that he was not there and was due to land at the airport, made their way to PAP.

that Henry was temporarily stuck in the airport, but was able to return to his residence later, followed by police protesters. No casualties were reported.

Protesters are decrying the killings of several police officers amid widespread insecurity and gang violence in the country.

Six police officers were killed on January 25, 2023, bringing the total number of deaths over the past week to at least 10, according to public statements by the Haitian National Police.

Manpower cut and increased workload, permanent pay cut and reduced rest time – these are just a few of the reasons why Cathay Pacific cabin crew members have 鈥渞eached the edge鈥 and planned to stage a protest on January 18, 2022.

鈥淲hile we always provide service straight from our hearts, our hearts are broken. From tremendous redundancy, huge permanent pay cut, outport allowance cut, manpower cut but increased workload, reduced rest time to reduced outport layover period, we have reached the edge,鈥 the Cathay Pacific Flight Attendants Union said in an published to its Facebook page, addressed to 鈥淗ong Kongers and our valued customers鈥.

Canceled protest

On the evening of January 17, 2023, however, the union announced that the planned assembly or protest for January 18, 2023 after withdrawing its application for a 鈥淟etter of No Objection鈥 from Hong Kong police.

The union had earlier applied for a 鈥淟etter of No Objection鈥 from HK police, along with plans to hold the assembly outside Cathay Pacific City, the airline精东影业 headquarters located at Hong Kong International Airport (HKG).

Cathay Pacific did not consent to the assembly taking place within the premises.

鈥淎s a responsible Union, our first priority is to protect our Members from involving any unauthorized assembly. Therefore, this leaves us no choice but to withdraw our request for the approval for Letter of No Objection from the police,鈥 the union said in a Facebook post on January 17, 2023.

Work-to-rule action

Despite the canceled protest, the union reminded its members to abide by the so-called 鈥渨ork-to-rule鈥 action starting January 19, 2023.

The 鈥渨ork-to-rule鈥 action means employees only do as much work as stipulated by their contracts. This includes employees refusing to work on days off.

According to the union, this action was endorsed by 100% of its members present during its most recent general meeting in December 2022.

The union said that Cathay Pacific had ignored its concerns about long working hours and manpower shortages since 2021.

“If you’re not going to do this the easy way, we’ll have to do it the hard way,鈥, seemingly addressing the airline.聽

Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS) managed to avoid flight disruptions after becoming one of the focal points during a protest organized by Dutch farmers.

The farmers, protesting the government精东影业 plan to impose new emissions standards, started blocking the roads around AMS with heavy equipment. Minor clashes with police have also been reported by local press.

It has been reported that the farmers planned to enter the airport精东影业 premises and block the runway in a move the protesters described as 鈥渟hutting down the country鈥. Both and the Dutch warned travelers about possible flight disruptions.

Some of the country精东影业 other airports, including (EIN) and Groningen Airport Eelde (GAE) also issued warning to passengers. GAE, which had already been blocked by protesters in June, called on the protesters to spare the airport, to news website RTV.

However, as of July 4, the farmers have not entered the premises of any airport, blocking road access instead.

AMS avoided protest-related disruptions and flights are still going to plan, . There have also been no reports of disruption at any other airport.

Numerous traffic jams across the country have been reported by local media, as the farmers blocked the roads and access to various infrastructure.

The Royal Marechaussee, the Dutch military police, have been mobilized and armored equipment has reportedly to prevent the farmers from accessing and blocking certain roads, including those in the vicinity of AMS.

Hundreds of Delta Air Lines pilots have warned of plans to picket, demanding better pay and working conditions. The protest will take place on June 30, 2022, just a few days before the Independence Day (July 4), a busy national holiday in the United States.

The Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA), which represents more than 65,000 flight crew members across US and Canada, has estimated that its nearly 14,000 members across the US are currently work longer hours despite airlines cancelling thousands of passenger flights due to staff shortages.

The aims of the protest are to demand improvements in workload, wage, retirement, and job protection policies, ALPA . The union also outlined that pay levels for flight crews have not changed since 2016.

Jason Ambrosi, a pilot at Delta Air Lines and a member of ALPA, said in the statement that airline pilots are also unhappy with flight cancelations and the resulting chaos in their rosters.

“When delays or cancellations happen, the pilots share in our passengers’ frustration. As long-term stakeholders in our airline, seeing our operational reliability suffer is bad business and puts the Delta brand at risk.” Ambrosi said.

“The perfect storm is occurring. Demand is back and pilots are flying record amounts of overtime but are still seeing our customers being stranded and their holiday plans ruined,鈥 Ambrosi added.

According to ALPA, the planned protest will take place at Delta Air Lines hubs across the US, including airports in Atlanta (ATL), Detroit (DTW), Los Angeles (LAX), Minneapolis (MSP), New York (JFK), Seattle (SEA) and Salt Lake City (SLC).

Russian forces have helped take back control of Almaty airport (ALA), in Kazakhstan精东影业 largest city, two days after the airport was stormed by anti-government protesters.

On January 7, 2022, the Interfax news agency cited the Russian defense ministry as saying military units were being flown into Kazakhstan 鈥渁round the clock鈥 and that they now controlled the airport in Almaty together with Kazakh law enforcement.

Airlines, including Lufthansa (LHAB) (LHA), suspended services to ALA after the protests broke out in cities across the country on January 5, 2022, over a sharp increase in fuel prices. The unrest in the former Soviet state, which has been independent for 30 years, turned into a broader uprising against the government and corruption.

President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev had called on members of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), which includes Russia, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan, for help in restoring peace to the central Asian country.

鈥淎n anti-terrorist operation has been launched. The forces of law and order are working hard. Constitutional order has largely been restored in all regions of the country,鈥 Tokayev said on January 7, 2022, in a statement cited by the Reuters news agency. People he described as 鈥渢errorists鈥 were still damaging property, the president added. 鈥淭herefore counter-terrorist actions should be continued until the militants are completely eliminated.鈥

Flag carrier Air Astana said it would resume international flights from Nur-Sultan Airport (NQZ) in the capital on January 7, 2022. However, it added in the statement that ALA remains closed.

Air Astana精东影业 first flights from NQZ will be to Dubai and Moscow, plus domestic services to Atyrau, Shymkent and Turkestan. The airline said international services to Frankfurt, Germany and Kutaisi, Georgia will restart on January 8, 2022, and to Istanbul on January 9.

Hundreds of workers from San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) will go on a scheduled protest on November 24, 2021 in order to highlight demands for affordable and better health care benefits, according to union officials.

In a press statement, labor union Unite Here says that the protest claims from SFO include workers being denied affordable family health care in the face of increased risk of COVID-19 due to exposure to holiday travelers, and the union keeping workers on part-time status means they cannot qualify for health care coverage.

The SFO workers strike is scheduled from 10:00 AM to 15:00 PM  at the airport精东影业 Terminal 3 on what is typically one of the busiest travel days of the year and will include about 200 workers, some non-union and some members of the Unite Here Local 2 union, who are cashiers and food service employees in airport terminals as well as those who prepare food and drinks served on planes.

鈥淎irport employers are cheating their employees out of health care that workers need more than ever,鈥 said Anand Singh, president of Unite Here Local 2 in a statement.

鈥淭hese greedy companies will stop at nothing just to pad their profits 鈥 even union-busting to avoid giving workers family health care. With COVID on the upswing, airport workers are going to fight back to get the health care they deserve.鈥

SFO spokesman Doug Yakel that the airport has issued a permit to the union for free speech activity to ensure that passengers can continue to move through the airport without being impeded.

Meanwhile, at LAX, airport food workers will stage a day-long protest on November 24, 2021 at Terminal 4 departures area of the airport.

According to Unite Here Local 11精东影业, airport workers plan to demonstrate all day to express frustration that American highway and airport food company HMSHost has dragged out its labor dispute with workers at LAX, resulting in hundreds of long-term workers going without a raise, except for those required by the airport minimum wage, for more than three years.

In Phoenix, Arizona, union airport concessions workers at Phoenix Sky Harbour International Airport (PHX) have been on strike since November 22, 2021. Unite Here Local 11 Phoenix strikers demand a new, comprehensive contract with fair raises, affordable health insurance, a company-paid retirement contribution, protections for workers鈥 tips, and strong contract language for equal opportunity and protection from discrimination.

HMS Host is the largest airport concessions company in North America and at LAX, where the company operates numerous restaurants, all on-airport Starbucks locations, and American Airlines (A1G) (AAL) lounges in Terminal 4 and Terminal 5.

Trade union Unite sent a letter with a strike warning British Airways (BA) over its plan to institute significant pay cuts and change employment terms and conditions.

Union精东影业 letter, obtained by BBC, was addressed to BA chief executive Alex Cruz. It accused the company of arrogance and claimed the union will take 鈥渋ndustrial action鈥 to prevent BA from enacting the plan.

The main subject of the disagreement is BA精东影业 employment of 鈥渇ire and rehire鈥 policy. Unite claims the airline has already planned to fire thousands of employees and then rehire them on worse conditions, effectively forcing all workers into accepting pay cuts and furloughs.

BA responded with a statement saying it is 鈥渄oing everything it can to save jobs鈥 and that union精东影业 criticism is 鈥渄isappointing鈥 in the context of the crisis, when jobs are being lost in every industry.

IAG, BA精东影业 parent company, announced its plans to cut 12,000 jobs back in April. Unite, which represents thousands of BA精东影业 employees, mostly maintenance staff, engineers and cabin crew, has been battling with the company ever since.
