Two climate activists have been arrested after breaking into London Stansted Airport (STN) spraying two jets with orange paint.

The incident occurred early in the morning of June 20, 2024.

The activists, identified as Jennifer Kowalski and Cole Macdonald of British environmental activist group Just Stop Oil, gained access to the private airfield at around 05:00 local time.

Just Stop Oil recorded how the two activists managed to get into the airport and pull off their stunt, and shared it on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).

The video shows the activists using an angle grinder to cut through the metal fence that leads to the private runway. They then cover at least two parked private jets with orange paint, before hugging each other in front of the camera.

Just Stop Oil captioned the post, 鈥淛ust Stop Oil paint private jet hours after Taylor Swift lands鈥.

The group said that it is demanding an 鈥渆mergency treaty鈥 to end fossil fuels by 2030.

However, a Stansted Airport representative told media outlets that Swift精东影业 private jet was not at the airport when the incident occurred.

In a press release by Just Stop Oil, Kowalski, a former sustainability manager, said that she felt she had to take 鈥渄esperate measures鈥 to be heard.

Kowalski is quoted as saying: 鈥淥ver the years, I鈥檝e had to realize that even working in sustainability provides me with essentially no ability to make the necessary changes to prevent the complete collapse of our natural systems. I have to take desperate measures to make my voice heard.鈥

The pair were later arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and interference with the use or operation of national infrastructure.

Thousands of passengers were left stuck in long queues after passport e-gates at major UK airports suffered a nationwide outage on May 7, 2024.

According to the UK Home Office, a wider system network issue was detected at 19:44 local time and a 鈥渓arge scale鈥 contingency response was activated within six minutes. All e-gates were back online shortly after midnight.

The Home Office also said there was 鈥渘o indication鈥 of malicious activity behind the outage and border security was not compromised.

E-gates use facial recognition to check a traveler精东影业 identity and allow them to enter the country without having to be processed or spoken to by a Border Force officer.

During the outage, airport staff resorted to manually processing passengers. The incident came at a peak travel period with many travelers returning home from a long weekend.

A number of passengers took to social media to upload photographs and video footage of the almost-five hour ordeal and the chaos experienced at airports across the country.

Airports affected by the outage were London-Heathrow Airport (LHR), London-Gatwick Airport (LGW), London-Stansted Airport (STN), Edinburgh Airport (EDI), Birmingham Airport (BHX), Manchester Airport (MAN) and Bristol Airport (BRS).

In an effort to demonstrate Ryanair精东影业 continued commitment to achieve net zero by 2050, Europe精东影业 busiest airline has announced the purchase of 1,000 tons of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) from Shell.听

According to Ryanair, the SAF, which will be supplied to the airline at Stansted Airport (STN) in the United Kingdom (UK), is enough fuel to power 200 flights to Madrid.听听

The latest purchase is part of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) agreement between Ryanair and Shell signed in 2022 to provide the airline with 360,000 tons of SAF between 2025 and 2030.

Ryanair says this volume of SAF could save up to 900,000 tons in CO2 emissions.

As well as using SAF, Ryanair is investing heavily in new technology aircraft, including a $22 billion investment in Boeing 737-8200s which reduce CO2 emissions by 16%, and a further $40 billion for 300 Boeing 737 MAX 10 aircraft which reduce CO2 emissions by 20%.

The carrier is also working with in the Ryanair Sustainable Aviation Research Centre to advance its decarbonization commitments.听

鈥淩yanair continues to lead the way in sustainable aviation. As demonstrated today at Stansted, by using SAF, the latest engine technologies and electric ground handling equipment, we are making significant investments to decarbonize our operations and achieve our commitments of net zero carbon emissions by 2050 and 25% less CO2 emissions per passenger/km by 2031,鈥 said Ryanair精东影业 Director of Sustainability and Finance, Thomas Fowler.

Fowler added: 鈥淥ur partners at Shell and MAG are key enablers of these goals, and today精东影业 announcement of Ryanair精东影业 purchase of 1,000 tons of SAF from Shell is testament to that. We will continue to work with our partners across the network to make every Ryanair flight as environmentally efficient as possible.鈥濃

London-Stansted Airport (STN) has just recorded its busiest-ever October, with record numbers of passengers passing through the airport精东影业 single terminal.

Almost 2.6 million passengers passed through the airport during the month, surpassing the airport精东影业 previous record, which was set back in 2018.

The airport, often referred to as 鈥淟ondon精东影业 third airport鈥 (after Heathrow-LHR and Gatwick-LGW), has explained that due to the popularity of the facility精东影业 extensive European route network, alongside the autumn half-term getaway, ensured that it saw more 28,000 more passengers in October 2023 than in October 2018. The total passenger number was also up 9.7% on the same month last year.听

The three most popular countries during the month were Spain, Italy, and Germany, while the busiest routes were to Dublin, Istanbul, and Edinburgh.听

Looking at the wider picture, the number of passengers using the airport in the 12 months ending October 2023 stands at 27.6 million, representing an increase of 27% over the previous year.

Operational performance during October was stable, with 96% of passengers passing through security in 15 minutes or less. The average queue time for security was just over five minutes during the busiest periods of the day.

鈥淎fter a very busy and positive summer season at London Stansted, we have seen the rapid growth in passenger numbers continue into the autumn as we recorded our busiest October ever,鈥 said the airport精东影业 Managing Director, Gareth Powell. 鈥淲e know our position as the number one UK airport for destinations to Europe, coupled with the ease and efficiency of using the airport, helps make Stansted the natural choice for so many passengers from London to Cambridge, and right across the wider eastern region.鈥

He added: 鈥淎s has been the case all year, our extensive and unique route network continues to be extremely popular with many overseas visitors seeking convenient and great value direct access to the UK.鈥

Looking ahead

In October 2023, the airport also received planning permission to extend its terminal building.

Stansted精东影业 owners (MAG) said that the extension will transform the airport experience, improving every step of a passenger精东影业 journey, from check-in on departure through to when they arrive at immigration.听听

London-Stansted Airport

The work will also provide capacity to accommodate forecasted passenger growth towards the airport精东影业 approved limit.

鈥淲e also achieved a very significant milestone last month as we secured planning permission to extend our terminal building,鈥 Powell said. 鈥淭his project will help transform the airport journey while maintaining the simple, efficient, and reliable experience we know our passengers really value when they choose to fly from Stansted.鈥

鈥淎s we enter a new phase of growth in the years ahead and serve more passengers each year than ever before, they can be confident our plans will build on this success and make every airport journey even better in the future,鈥 he added.

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) has issued a special bulletin after the windows of a Titan Airways Airbus A321 were damaged by high power lights that had been used during filming.

The bulletin was published on November 11, 2023, to raise awareness of the potential issue, only discovered while the aircraft was in flight.

News of an aircraft suffering damaged windows first surfaced in October 2023, when the (BEA) in France declared that the AAIB was investigating an incident in which three windows had become 鈥渕issing and loose鈥.听

The latest information from the explains how the incident occurred.听

In its bulletin, the AAIB detailed that the Titan Airways Airbus A321-253NX, registered G-OATW, was on a 鈥渕ulti-day charter away from base with a flight crew consisting of three pilots, an engineer, a load master and six cabin crew鈥. There were also nine passengers on board, all employees of the tour operator.听听

The aircraft left London Stansted Airport (STN) on October 4, 2023, at around 11:50 am local time, heading to Orlando International Airport (MCO) in Florida.

According to the report, once the seat belt signs had been switched off, the load master at the rear of the plane 鈥渘oticed an increased cabin noise as he approached the overwing exits and his attention was drawn to a cabin window on the left side of the aircraft鈥.

He could see that the window seal was flapping, and the windowpane appeared to have 鈥榮lipped down鈥. He described the sound as 鈥渓oud enough to damage your hearing鈥.

Flying at just under 14,000 feet, the third pilot and engineer checked the window, and the decision was made to return to STN.

After only 36 minutes in the air the A321 landed, and when the plane was inspected two further cabin windowpanes were found to be 鈥渕issing and a third was dislodged鈥. However, the cabin remained pressurized throughout the flight.听

What caused the damaged windows?听

The AAIB believes that the damage was caused on October 3, 2023, when high power lights were shone through the windows during a filming exercise designed to create the illusion of a sunset.

鈥淭he lights were first shone on the right side of the aircraft for approximately five and a half hours, with the light focused on the cabin windows just aft of the overwing exits. The lights were then moved to the left side of the aircraft where they illuminated a similar area on the left side for approximately four hours,鈥 the AAIB said.

On close inspection of the windows, the AAIB discovered that the 鈥渇oam ring material on the back of the cabin liners was found to be melted in the areas adjacent to the windows that were damaged or missing鈥.

In total, four of the aircraft精东影业 windows were found to be damaged.

鈥淭he windows appear to have sustained thermal damage and distortion because of elevated temperatures while illuminated for approximately four to five and a half hours during filming activity the day before the flight,鈥 the AAIB observed.

The AAIB concluded that it was likely that the lights had been positioned less than ten meters away from the plane.

The concern for the future is that there could be 鈥渕ore serious consequences鈥 if window integrity is lost at a higher altitude.

The AAIB investigation now continues with the support of the BEA, the aircraft manufacturer, and the aircraft operator to understand how a similar occurrence could be prevented from happening.听

The United Kingdom精东影业 (UK) Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) is investigating an incident in which a Titan Airways Airbus A321 climbed to 10,000 feet with three windows missing and loose.

Details surrounding the incident were released by the (BEA) in France.听听

According to the BEA, the aircraft climbed to approximately 10,000ft, where the flight crew noticed excessive cabin noise.

The decision was subsequently made to return to London-Stansted Airport (STN) as a safety precaution.

An inspection of the Airbus A321 discovered the windows missing and loose plus a damaged left stabilizer.听

The BEA described the episode, which happened on October 4, 2023, as a 鈥渟erious incident鈥 which will undergo a full investigation.听

In a statement on October 15, 2023, Titan Airways said: 鈥淭he crew became aware of increased noise in the cabin and an issue with one of the windows. The pilot did not declare an emergency and landed the aircraft safely, according to normal operating procedures. Emergency services at the airport were not activated.鈥

The airline added: 鈥淭he 21 staff members on board, who were being positioned for their next scheduled flight, were unaffected and disembarked the aircraft in the normal way. Following the landing it was discovered that the outer panel in 3 of the windows was missing. The matter was immediately reported to the relevant authorities and an investigation is now taking place.鈥

The two-and-a half-old Airbus A321, registered G-OATW, was due to land later that day at Orlando International Airport (MCO) in Florida.

The BEA said: 鈥淚n the climb at approximately 10,000ft, crew noticed excessive cabin noise and aircraft executed a turn back to London Stansted. It was discovered that 3 windows were missing and loose, and damage to LH stabilizer.鈥

According to Aviation Safety Network, the aircraft was formally used by the British government for 18 months in a VIP configuration.听
