10. Denel Rooivalk

The South African Rooivalk is based on French A茅rospatiale SA 330 Puma. As such, the design is highly dependent on French technology and spare parts. With the bold intention of manufacturing one of the best attack helicopters globally, Denel Aviation succeeded in producing an aircraft on par with its rivals. Armed with highly sophisticated indigenous Mokopa anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs), the Rooivalk outmatches everything South Africa could potentially face in its geopolitical region.

Following the conclusion of the Cold War, the Italian design underwent a transformation to align with NATO‘s changing strategic objectives. With the diminished likelihood of encountering a Soviet armor onslaught, the aircraft was streamlined, resulting in reduced ballistic protection. During its prime, it was regarded as a viable counterpart to the American AH-64 Apache.  

Equipped with standard NATO armaments like Hellfire and TOW ATGMs, the A129 boasted compatibility with allied forces. A total of , with over 30 of them still in active service to this day. 

6. Kamov Ka-52

Probably the most unique attack helicopter in service today, the , with tandem side-by-side seating, ejection seats, dual contra-rotating main rotors, and no tail blades. It is one of the most maneuverable helicopters of any kind in the world today.  

With an advanced battlefield management system, the Ka-52 can serve a command and control role for a larger helicopter group of Mi-24s and Mi-28s as a target detector and designator. In addition to its unique characteristics, the Ka-52 employs all the firepower expected from a modern attack helicopter, albeit its autocannon is mounted in a fixed position, lacking the flexibility of a turret. 

There are currently over 196 units manufactured, with , North Macedonia, and Russia serving as the current operators. 

5. TAI T129 ATAK 

A Turkish modernization of the Agusta A129 Mangusta, the T129 shares only the fuselage with its Italian counterpart. The internals are proprietary Turkish technology with upgraded avionics, airframe, and weapons.  

78 units have been built as of 2022. With interest from multiple nations, such as , , and , T129 is a seemingly more successful international version of its Italian predecessor. Its current operators are , , and Turkey.

4. Eurocopter Tiger

A joint Franco-German development, the Tiger is the second and the most recent attack helicopter to emerge from Western Europe. With more than 180 units produced, it is the most successful and widespread European design. Employing a composite layout, 80% of the airframe is made of carbon laminates, Kevlar, and honeycomb-shaped structures.

Configured with a plethora of Western missiles, rockets, and a French cannon, the Tiger is employed by German, French, Spanish, and Australian forces. However, Germany is planning to retire all the Tiger models between 2031 and 2038. 

Initially scheduled for the , the Tiger Mk3 upgrade was supposed to encompass several significant enhancements. Notably, the upgrade was to include the adoption of a standardized anti-tank missile, along with additional improvements to the communication system. However, due to Germany’s planned divestment, the standard was reformed under a more conservative Mk2+ standard.

3. Bell AH-1Z Viper

The American Viper is a third-generation descendant of the venerable Bell AH-1 Cobra, the predecessor of all modern attack helicopters. The US Marines Corps鈥� asset traces its lineage back to 1965. 10. Lockheed Martin F-16 Block 70/72: $63 million

The F-16 was created as a light and maneuverable fighter jet that would offer an affordable alternative to the F-15. Its older variants cost roughly $30 million apiece 鈥� cheaper than the vast majority of contemporary fighters 鈥� but the most advanced ones are really quite pricey. 

The Block 70 and 72 configurations are the most up-to-date iteration of this venerable fighter, which was even renamed F-16V to mark the upgrade. The advancements are most likely very similar to the F-21, a jet Lockheed Martin has offered to India. While we may never know the price of the F-21, the cost of a single F-16 Block 70 gives an insight into how much a top-of-the-line jet, based on the venerable F-16 airframe, may cost.

9. Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet: up to $66.9 million

The F/A-18 Super Hornet came in the late 90s, replacing older Hornets of A, B, C, and D variants. Although originally 鈥� and primarily 鈥� a carrier-based aircraft, it has found a fair share of interest from countries that intend to use it only as a ground-based one.

The latest upgrade of the F/A-18, the Block III configuration, features vast improvements to avionics and weapon systems. It brings the Super Hornet in line with the latest 4.5 generation fighter jets but drives the price up as well.

The most expensive variant of this jet is the EA-18G Growler though, a dedicated electronic warfare aircraft with a price tag of up to $125 million. While it can be equipped with both air-to-air and air-to-ground munitions, it is much too specialized to be considered in the same vein as regular fighter jets.

8. Shenyang FC-31: $70 million

The Shenyang FC-31, also known as J-35 or J-31 is a multi-role fighter aircraft developed by the People’s Republic of China. It is primarily designed for military purposes and intended to serve as a fifth-generation combat aircraft. The FC-31 is intended to be used for various missions, including air superiority, ground attack, and reconnaissance. The FC-31 incorporates stealth technology, advanced avionics, and other features commonly associated with fifth-generation jets. 

In 2019, the People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) turned down the Shenyang FC-31 “Gyrfalcon” in favor of its rival, the Chengdu J-20 “Mighty Dragon.” Despite this setback, the FC-31’s development continued, and there are indications that it could potentially be converted into a carrier-based fighter for the Chinese Navy.

According to U.S. military and industry officials, it is believed that once the J-31 becomes operational, it will likely such as the F-15 Eagle, F-16 Fighting Falcon, and F/A-18E/F Super Hornet. However, its effectiveness against the latest fighters like the US-made F-22 and F-35 would depend on various factors including the quantity of J-31 aircraft deployed, the skill level of pilots, and the capabilities of its radar systems and other sensors. 

7. Saab JAS 39E/F Gripen: $85 million

The Swedish JAS 39 Gripen, of variants C and D, is notorious for being one of the cheapest new 4 or 4.5 generation fighter jets around. Its cost could go as low as $30 million per piece, a bargain for such an advanced machine. 

Its latest variants, the E and F, changed that. While they are still much cheaper to operate than 5th generation fighter jets, the cost of one such jet has more than doubled. An explanation of that lies in jets鈥� differences: almost everything, except for the airframe, got upgraded. New radar, engine, avionics, improved weapons systems 鈥� very little remained of the old Gripen.

In 2012, the new-generation JAS 39 was expected to cost over $100 million. It is only in the latest years that Saab managed to reduce the price, and with the reduction, the Gripen once again became a sought-after jet on the international market.

6. Chengdu J-20: $110 million

Very little is known about the Chinese 5th-generation jet. Its price tag is, too, mere speculation. Nevertheless, the J-20 is not for sale though, as China never intended to export its top weapon.  

A recently unveiled J-20 prototype bearing the serial number 2052 at the Chengdu Aircraft Corporation in China on June 29, 2023. Notably, it is now equipped with two WS-15 turbofan engines. Looking ahead, there is a high likelihood of continued advancements and refinements to the WS-15, with potential variations intended to propel the People’s Liberation Army’s sixth-generation fighter program.

5. Dassault Rafale: around $115 million

There are varying reports about the price of the Rafale, ranging between $100 and $120 million per piece in the most basic configuration. The French Air Force definitely bought the fighter for much less. In comparison, the deal reached by the Indian Air Force 鈥� reportedly, full of minute, but pricey enhancements 鈥� was more expensive, and is often criticized for that.

Being one of the most advanced aircraft of its generation and manufactured in one of the most expensive regions of the world, the Rafale is not cheap. 

4. Boeing F-15EX: $117 million

The F-15 itself was not supposed to be cheap, and its latest variant, the F-15EX, demonstrates that. It is supposed to replace older C and D models while being more affordable than the most advanced 5th-generation jets. That affordability comes mostly from operational costs. 

Its operating cost is 鈥渙nly鈥� $29,000 per hour. This cost represents one-third of the total operating cost of the F-35. That, as well as its similarity to previous models of the F-15, makes the F-15EX an attractive aircraft for many countries. 

3. Eurofighter Typhoon: around $124 million

Another European fighter jet, the Eurofighter Typhoon may cost as cheap as $50 million for countries within the European Union that participated in its development, but the export price is much higher. In 2018, Airbus reportedly offered Eurofighters to India for as much as 鈧�138 million per piece, which is still cheaper than what was paid for Rafales. 

2. Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor: $143 million

Praised as one of the best fighter jets in the world, the F-22 Raptor holds a prominent position. Developed by Lockheed Martin for the United States Air Force, this fifth-generation, single-seat, twin-engine, all-weather stealth air superiority fighter boasts top-notch attributes.   

It incorporates highly dependable stealth technology, earning it recognition as one of the best in its class.

1. Lockheed Martin F-35: $177 million

The F-35 went down in history as the most expensive weapon system ever. Operational costs of the newest fifth-generation fighter jet are some of the highest in the world, making the aircraft relatively expensive to buy and maintain. From 2022, the unit cost of F-35 has further increased because of inflation, lower quantities, and improved capabilities. 

In a report published in late May 2023, the US Government Accountability Office (GAO) wrote that 鈥渢he program attributes the increased procurement cost to , along with support costs for equipment, technical data, and training.鈥� 

The A, B, and C variants of the F-35 are, for all intents and purposes, different aircraft. The most expensive is the F-35B, designed for short take-off and vertical landing (STOVL). 

With a price tag of approximately $177 million per unit, it also claims the title of the most expensive aircraft on this list.

First, let精东影业 take a brief look at what is meant when we refer to the speed of an aircraft. 

The speeds reported in this list have usually been achieved during test flights involving special test aircraft in clean configurations (carrying no weapons or external fuel tanks). These tests show what the aircraft is capable of. However, in their day-to-day operations, the jets tend to fly significantly slower. 

The top speeds are also usually measured at an optimal altitude, typically above 30,000 ft (9,000 m), and many of the aircraft mentioned below are much slower when flying at lower altitudes.  

Additionally, this list only contains fighter aircraft that are currently in service. The General Dynamics F-111 Aardvark, the Panavia Tornado ADV, and the Convair F-106 Delta Dart among other jets have already been retired and have not been included here.  

The same applies to the Lockheed YF-12, the fighter related to the legendary SR-71 Blackbird. While it is the fastest fighter jet to ever exist, it was an experimental aircraft that never reached service.

10. McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II

The Phantom is one of the most famous Cold War jets. While it has been retired by most of its operators, the air forces of Turkey, Greece, South Korea, and Iran still fly the aircraft. 

Notable for its un-aerodynamic shape, the F-4 can reach high speeds thanks to the raw power of General Electric J79 engines, invoking a saying popular among Phantom pilots and fans alike: 鈥渁 brick can fly if you stick a big enough engine on it鈥�. 

9. Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor 

• Top speed: Mach 2.25 (2,414 km/h / 1,500 mph / 1,303 kn at 40,000 ft / 12,000 m) 

The F-22 is the first 5th generation fighter, and the only stealth aircraft to be included on this list. Fewer than 200 Raptors have ever been made, and the type has never been exported. The US Air Force (USAF) remains its only operator. 

Despite being very fast at high altitudes, many of the older jets on this list can barely break the sound barrier while flying low. But the F-22 is different: it can fly faster than Mach 1.2 at sea level and reach high speeds even with full armament, which does not cause additional drag due to being stored in internal weapons bays. 

The Raptor also boasts the ability to supercruise, reaching more than Mach 1.8 without using afterburners. Supercruise is a signature tactic of 5th generation fighter jets and leads to greater fuel economy and longer ranges, as afterburners are very fuel-hungry. 

8. IAI Kfir 

• Top speed: Mach 2.3 (2,440 km/h / 1,520 mph / 1,320 kn at 36,000 ft / 11,000 m) 

The Kfir is an Israeli upgrade to the Dassault Mirage 5. This aircraft is currently operated by Colombia, Sri Lanka, and the private military corporation Textron.  

Its numerous upgrades include the General Electric J79-J1E turbojet engine which is considerably more powerful than the Mirage 5精东影业 original SNECMA Atar 9C.  

There are some conflicting reports that indicate that the Kfir精东影业 top speed is a more modest Mach 2. Furthermore, since the existing Kfir airframes are quite old, there is a chance that the aircraft can no longer achieve these speeds. However, much of the available information indicates that the Kfir精东影业 top speed is Mach 2.3. It also suggests that the model has likely reached this speed in the past, which is why 精东影业 has included the aircraft in its ranking. 

7. MiG-29 

• Top speed: Mach 2.3 (2,450 km/h / 1,520 mph / 1,320 kn at 36,000 ft / 11,000 m) 

Designed in the Soviet Union as a lighter counterpart to the Sukhoi Su-27 and a response to the F-16, the MiG-29 has been widely exported and is currently in the inventory of Russia, Ukraine, North Korea, Poland, India, and many other countries. 

Despite often being described as a rival to the F-16, the MiG-29 mainly performed the role of point-defense interceptor and, as such, had a relatively small range and high speed. 

The aircraft has some limitations, though, and it can鈥檛 go supersonic while carrying a fuel tank. Nevertheless, a clean MiG-29 is said to be capable of reaching Mach 1.2 at sea level. 

6. Grumman F-14 Tomcat 

• Top speed: Mach 2.3 (2,485 km/h / 1,544 mph / 1,342 kn at 40,000 ft / 12,000 m) 

The F-14 is the world精东影业 first 4th generation fighter jet, designed primarily as a naval fighter for the US Navy. Retired by the Navy in favor of the F/A-18, the F-14 is currently operated by only the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force. 

Some reports suggest a clean F-14 could reach an even higher speed of Mach 2.5, although this claim has not been confirmed.  

5. MiG-23

Another swing-wing fighter, the MiG-23 was designed in the early 1960s and is still operated by North Korea, Syria, Ethiopia, and several other countries. 

Built as an interceptor, the MiG-23 is far less maneuverable than newer 4th generation jets and has relatively poor low-altitude performance. Nevertheless, it was an extremely sophisticated jet for the late 60s and remains one of the most iconic Soviet aircraft of the Cold War. 

4. Sukhoi Su-27 family 

• Top speed: Mach 2.35 (2,500 km/h / 1,600 mph / 1,300 kn at 36,000 ft / 11,000 m) 

The Su-27 was one of the most prolific late-Cold War jets, giving rise to an entire family of aircraft that includes the Su-30, the Su-34, the Su-35, the J-11, and J-16 among others.  

It is one of the most widely operated aircraft in the world. A number of models, derived from the Su-27, have often been described as having top speeds between Mach 2 and Mach 2.35, although the most recent variants are unlikely to be as fast. Check out the section at the end of this list to find out why. 

Unlike some other 4th generation jets, the Su-27 can鈥檛 reach Mach 1.2 at sea level, and with external ordinance, its top speed is also significantly lower. However, it was not intended to work as a dedicated interceptor, and high speeds at a high altitude are more of a byproduct of this aircraft精东影业 powerful engines, designed to give it high payload capacity and acceleration. 

3. McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle 

• Top speed: Mach 2.5 (2,655 km/h / 1,650 mph / 1,434 kn at 40,000 ft / 12,000 m) 

Probably one of the most well-known US-made aircraft, the F-15 is operated by the USAF, Israel, Japan, Qatar, South Korea, Saudi Arabia and Singapore. 

The jet was developed as a response to the MiG-25 interceptor (which makes an appearance later in this list). While the Eagle is slightly slower than the aircraft it was designed to rival, the American jet makes up for this by also having tremendous low-speed maneuverability. 

It is also the only fighter jet to ever shoot down a space satellite, and the only one to experience no air-to-air losses while scoring over 100 aerial victories.  

Despite the base model being more than 50 years old, the F-15 is still in production as a vastly upgraded F-15EX. 

2. MiG-31 

• Top speed: Mach 2.83 (3,000 km/h / 1,900 mph / 1,600 kn at 70,538 ft / 21,500 m) 

The MiG-31 was based on the legendary MiG-25 and was also intended to replace it. The performance of the two aircraft is actually similar, except for the fact that the MiG-31 has superior sensors, electronics and armament. 

The MiG-31 was initially designed to be more adaptable than the MiG-25, offering several variants, including a multirole fighter, a bomber and a reconnaissance aircraft. These variants were later scrapped but plans to produce them still resulted in the MiG-31 having a decent low-level performance. The aircraft can reach Mach 1.25 at sea level, something earlier interceptors were incapable of doing.  

The MiG-31 is primarily operated by Russia精东影业 Aerospace Forces, although Kazakhstan also has a small number of these jets. Of the more than 500 MiG-31s manufactured, fewer than 100 currently remain operational. 

However, despite many modernizations, the aircraft does have problems that severely limit its speed.  

During parliamentary hearings in 2013, Victor Bondarev, head of the Russian Aerospace Forces, that the MiG-31’s new cockpit glass, which provides better visibility, has also limited the aircraft精东影业 speed to Mach 1.5. 

But the jet might not need to rely on faster speeds due to its vastly expanded modern armament, which includes hypersonic missiles.  

1. MiG-25 

• Top speed: Mach 2.83 (3,000 km/h / 1,900 mph / 1,600 kn at 70,538 ft / 21,500 m) 

Designed in the late 1960s the MiG-25 was arguably the most feared fighter jet of the Cold War, and is responsible for the US scrambling to develop the F-15. 

However, whether the MiG-25 can really be considered operational is debatable.  

Retired in almost all countries that had it, the MiG-25 officially remains in the arsenal of just one country: Syria, where it has been grounded for years, according to multiple reports. Algeria demonstrated some flightworthy MiG-25s in mid-2022. However, it has since gone on to officially retire the aircraft. 

However, at least theoretically, the MiG-25 remains the world’s fastest fighter jet. It and reached the speed surpassed by no other airbreathing jet except for the SR-71 and its derivatives. 

The MiG-25 was designed first and foremost as a high-altitude interceptor. Just like many other aircraft of this type, it had poor maneuverability and could not break the sound barrier at sea level while carrying missiles.

This ranking includes speeds reached by test aircraft. But what about deployed jets? 

With the MiG-25 having been practically retired, and the MiG-31 facing a speed limit of Mach 1.5 imposed by the latest modernizations, the F-15 is the fastest fighter jet in service in terms of deployed aircraft.  

Its latest variant, the F-15EX, is officially faster than any variant of the next fastest jet, the Su-27. Some reports have that the F-15EX reached the speed of Mach 2.4 during testing, although this information has not been officially confirmed. Boeing also claims that the top speed of the F-15EX is Mach 2.4. 

However, does this matter? Not really. 

Why are modern jets slower?

You may have noticed that most jets on this list are rather old. Meanwhile, the latest generation, except for the F-22, is rarely reported as capable of reaching even Mach 2. 

Fast speeds have long stopped being a subject of bragging rights for aircraft manufacturers, and the newest aircraft are indeed, on average, significantly slower than their predecessors. This is because speed stopped being as important in air combat and was sacrificed in favor of maneuverability, stealth, and fuel efficiency among other factors.  

have shown that fighters rarely reach speeds of more than Mach 1.2 during real air combat, and higher speeds are only important for long-range interceptions, a role that the top aircraft on this list, the F-15 and the MiG-31, are perfectly capable of fulfilling. 

New medium- and long-range missiles further the speed advantage. As a result, Cold War-era interceptors remain the fastest jets ever designed, and the newest aircraft are, in comparison, very slow. They really 鈥�don鈥檛 make them as they used to鈥� 鈥� and for a reason.

10. Airbus A350-900 

The Airbus A350 is a long-haul passenger aircraft with a range of up to 15,000 km and a capacity of 300 to 350 passengers. Within the market, it competes with the Boeing 787-10 and 777 series, as well as the new Boeing 777X that will arrive with customers in 2025. Singapore Airlines (SIA1) (SINGY) is the largest operator of A350-900 aircraft. 

As of January 2024, the A350 Family had received 85 planes worldwide, making it one of the most successful wide-body aircraft ever.听听

During the COVID-19 pandemic, some A350s were converted into cargo aircraft to transport medical equipment and other supplies. The A350 freighter can carry a cargo of up to 104 tonnes. 

9. Boeing 747-400

The Boeing 747-400 is a passenger aircraft manufactured by Boeing in the US, with a capacity to accommodate up to 416 passengers in a three-class configuration, 524 in a two-class configuration, or 660 in an all-economy cabin. It has a travel range of 7,260 nautical miles or 13,446 kilometers.  

The 747-400 was a major development of the 747 series, with several structural and electronic improvements, and it made its inaugural flight on April 29, 1988. 

In 2020, the coronavirus pandemic significantly impacted the aviation industry, and many airlines, including British Airways, retired their entire fleet of Boeing 747 aircraft. As a result, the largest operator of the 747-400 has now become Lufthansa, which has (they are set to be replaced with the Boeing 777X in 2025).   

8. Airbus A340-500 

The Airbus A340-500 is a wide-body passenger aircraft manufactured in France. First introduced in 2002, it was designed to carry up to 372 passengers in a single-class configuration and 313 passengers in a typical two-class configuration.  

The aircraft was primarily operated by Emirates and Singapore Airlines (SIA1) (SINGY), with the latter using the A340-500 to operate the from Singapore to Newark. 

As of April 2023, there are no A340-500s in commercial airline service. The last two of its type were retired by Azerbaijan Airlines in 2019. 

7. Airbus A340-300

The Airbus A340-300 is a long-range French-manufactured passenger aircraft that first entered service back in 1993. It has a seating capacity of 295 passengers in a single-class configuration and 267 passengers in a typical two-class configuration. 

The largest operator of the A340-300 is Lufthansa (LHAB) (LHA), with a . However, Iberia, which previously operated 21 A340s, announced the retirement of the type in June 2020 due to the high costs and unsuitability of four-engine aircraft.听

6. Airbus A330-300

Airbus A330-300 is a widebody aircraft that first entered service on November 2, 1992. It has a passenger capacity that ranges from 250 to 440, depending on the seat configuration chosen by the airline. Some of its main users include Turkish Airlines, Air China, China Eastern Airlines (CIAH) (CEA), China Southern Airlines (ZNH), and Cathay Pacific. 

In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic led to a significant decrease in passenger traffic and a corresponding increase in air cargo demand and pricing. To meet this demand, Airbus introduced a new cargo conversion solution for its A330, which can handle cargo of up to 61 tonnes. 

5. Boeing 777-200

The Boeing 777-200 is a passenger plane manufactured in the United States (US). It can accommodate up to 440 passengers in a single-class configuration and 400 in a typical two-class configuration. It has a travel range of up to 7,700 nautical miles or 14,260 kilometers, depending on the version.
