Archer Aviation精东影业 electric vehicle takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft Midnight has completed its first-ever transition flight, successfully moving from vertical takeoff to wing-borne flight.

The flight was conducted at Archer精东影业 flight test facility in Salinas, California, on June 8, 2024, where Midnight reached speeds of over 100 mph before landing safely.

Although the flight represents Midnight精东影业 first airborne transition, Archer initially achieved the feat using its smaller full-scale eVTOL aircraft, Maker, in November 2022.聽

鈥淭ransitioning two generations of full-scale eVTOL aircraft in less than 2 years is another remarkable achievement for Archer精东影业 team. This shows we continue to successfully execute against our plan to create the most efficient path to market with an aircraft that is designed for certification and to be manufactured efficiently at scale,鈥 said Adam Goldstein, Archer精东影业 Founder and CEO.

In a statement on June 12, 2024, Archer said that Midnight is thought to be among one of the largest eVTOLs to complete transition, which it said is 鈥渃ritical to being able to carry commercially viable passenger payloads鈥.聽

Only seven months ago Archer announced that Midnight had successfully completed its first flight.

Archer has already established important relationships with United Airlines and the United States Air Force (USAF) which have both agreed to purchase Midnight aircraft.

鈥淪uccessfully completing the transition from hover to wing-borne flight with a full-scale eVTOL aircraft is a tremendous engineering feat that only a handful of companies in the world have achieved,鈥 Dr. Geoff Bower, Archer精东影业 Chief Engineer, said. 鈥淥ver the seven eVTOL aircraft I鈥檝e built and flown in my career, they have gotten progressively larger as we pursued payloads that made the aircraft platform commercially viable. 鈥

A transition flight occurs when the aircraft takes off vertically like a helicopter, accelerates forward, transitions from thrust-borne to wing-borne flight like an airplane with tilt propellers forward before decelerating and landing vertically.聽

In a major milestone, Archer Aviation has received the final airworthiness criteria for its electric vehicle takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft Midnight from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

The airworthiness criteria, on May 24, 2024, set out the direction in which Archer must now travel to achieve Type Certification and eventually transport paying passengers.聽

鈥淭he FAA announces the special class airworthiness criteria for the Archer Aviation, Inc. This document sets forth the airworthiness criteria the FAA finds to be appropriate and applicable for the powered-lift design,鈥 the FAA airworthiness criteria read.

Archer has become only the second eVTOL aircraft developer to receive final airworthiness criteria. Joby Aviation were provided with similar documentation in March 2024.

The finalization of Archer精东影业 airworthiness criteria unlocks the ability for Archer to work with the FAA to obtain the remaining final approvals on its certification and test plans.聽

This is a critical step as Archer continues to ramp up its 鈥榝or credit鈥 testing with the FAA and prepares to begin its piloted flight testing later this year.

鈥淢idnight is one giant step closer to taking passengers into the sky in the coming years in the U.S. The final airworthiness criteria for Midnight are an important step on our journey to make electric flying taxis an everyday reality,鈥 Billy Nolen, Archer Chief Regulatory Affairs Officer and former Administrator of the FAA, said. 鈥淭hank you to the team at the FAA for their continued hard work in support of making the electrification of aviation a reality.鈥

Archer has made significant progress on the construction of its first three piloted conforming Midnight aircraft.

The first aircraft in this initial fleet will begin piloted flight testing later this year, and subsequently be used in 鈥榝or credit鈥 flight testing with the FAA as the company progresses towards commercialization.

Archer精东影业 goal is to transform urban travel, replacing 60鈥90-minute commutes by car with estimated 10-20 minute flights that are safe, sustainable, low-noise, and cost-competitive with ground transportation.聽聽

For those passionate about the world of aviation and flight, it is an incredibly exciting time to be alive.

The COVID-19 pandemic was a huge, unprecedented body blow to the aviation industry, but the future is looking remarkedly brighter than where it once was, despite Boeing精东影业 current problems over safety.

Only last month India精东影业 biggest budget airline, IndiGo, announced an order for up to 100 Airbus A350s, representing the carrier精东影业 first leap into the long-haul market and a sure sign that the industry is expanding.聽聽

And the United Kingdom精东影业 largest airport, London-Heathrow (LHR) announced that the first financial quarter in 2024 was its busiest start to the year on record and the outlook for the entire year is very much the same.聽聽

What’s more, the aviation sector is on the cusp of new, innovative, and revolutionary concepts that have the potential to reshape the entire way populations travel.

Among the most significant are hydrogen powered aircraft, electric regional planes, electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft and supersonic commercial flights.

However, by far it is the subject and discussion around eVTOL aircraft that is causing the biggest stir with increasing numbers of newspaper column inches dedicated to the advancement of the humble 鈥楩lying Taxi鈥.聽

Why is everyone talking about eVTOLs?聽

Archer Aviation Midnight eVTOL
Archer Aviation

The evolution of eVTOL aircraft taps into the part of the brain that has long dreamt of a futuristic world where everyone is flying around in pods parked on their driveway.

It精东影业 a concept that consumers have been fed for decades in Hollywood movies and science fiction novels, so it is perhaps no surprise that the anticipation surrounding the introduction of eVTOLs is building.

The eVTOL developers are playing their part too with an incredibly efficient publicity machine that ensures every twist and turn of the aircraft精东影业 development is shared with the world.

And the sums of money involved in developing the aircraft and building the infrastructure to support the eVTOL network are staggering.

Only on April 25, 2024, one of the leading eVTOL innovators Archer Aviation announced that it had signed a multi-hundred-million-dollar agreement with Abu Dhabi.

Designed to accelerate Archer精东影业 planned commercial air taxi operations in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the framework agreement includes in-country manufacturing, operations, and training across the region with operations set to commence in 2025.聽

Are eVTOLs for me?

CityAirbus NextGen prototype

What is alarming about the rapid development of eVTOLs is there are still so many hoops to jump through before they can begin carrying passengers.聽聽

Public acceptance is an issue that will become more prevalent as awareness increases and counteracting the idea that eVTOLs are only for the very wealthy will be a tricky obstacle to overcome.

However, there are also positive signs, such as the Chinese developer EHang becoming the first company in the world to obtain type certification for its flying taxi.

But as aviation history has taught us, when all the problems are overcome that will still not be enough to ensure the survival of the eVTOL industry.

Here are just some examples of incredible ideas and concepts that were brought to life but never fully realized their potential.聽

Airbus A380聽

Emirates Airbus A380
Emirates

In February 2019, following the news that Emirates was reducing its order for the Airbus A380 the planemaker announced production of its superjumbo would end in 2021.聽聽

It was an astonishing turn of events for an aircraft that promised so much but, in the end, failed to deliver.

When the project to build the A380 was announced there were critics that said that an aircraft of its size was not viable, but few would have predicted the end would come so soon after its launch.

The Airbus A380 is undoubtably a magnificent aircraft and it is great to see so many airlines increasing its use. But it acts as a perfect example for the eVTOL industry that a vision does not always translate into reality and sometimes critics are proved right.聽

British Airways Concorde
British Airways

It is difficult to comprehend the levels of excitement that surrounded the launch of Concorde or how ahead of its time the aircraft was when it carried its first paying customers in 1969.聽聽

Concorde will always remain synonymous with British Airways and France but during development more than 100 non-binding orders were made for the supersonic jet from major airlines such as Lufthansa, Japan Airlines, American Airlines, United Airlines, Air India, and Air Canada.

Much like the eVTOL industry today many airlines saw Concorde and supersonic flight as the future.

However, 27 years after commercial operations both British Airways and Air France announced that they would retire their fleets.

A fatal crash on July 25, 2000, shortly after an Air France Concorde took off from Paris, a drop in air travel following the 9/11 terrorist attacks in the United States (US), the aircraft精东影业 high fuel consumption leading to lack of profits and restrictions to only use supersonic speeds over the ocean all contributed to its downfall.

For all its promise of being the future of flight, Concorde was unable to live up to the hype and its journey from development to becoming operational certainly chimes with the ambitions of eVTOL technology.

But in many ways, maybe Concorde was just ahead of its time. And with the development of a new era of supersonic passenger aircraft, super speed travel will have its day again.聽聽

Space shuttle聽

Space Shuttle Columbia
NASA

Not strictly aviation, but the space shuttle is another concept that promised a great deal but perhaps did not achieve everything that was planned for it.聽聽

n February 1, 2003, Space Shuttle Columbia disintegrated as it reentered the earth精东影业 atmosphere, killing all seven astronauts on board.聽

The event was the second space shuttle disaster since its inception following the loss of the Challenger crew in 1986.

While the 2003 tragedy was certainly the immediate cause for ending the space shuttle project the cracks were already appearing, placing its future in jeopardy.

When the last space shuttles were retired, they were not even halfway through their flight lifetimes, but the costs involved in operating the spacecraft had spiraled.

While the spacecraft精东影业 many achievements included helping to build the International Space Station (ISS) and transporting the Hubble Space Telescope, the project was sold to the public as a low-cost way of accessing orbit and that turned out being wide off the mark.

“The bottom-line answer is that it was too expensive. Way too expensive,” former Jet Propulsion Laboratory system engineer Mark Adler wrote for Newsweek in 2015. “The shuttle never met its promise for low-cost access to space by virtue of the system’s reusability.”聽

The advent of Space X has helped address many issues around expense but with each space shuttle project costing more than $1.5 billion it’s easy to see why it failed to reach its economical ambitions and alternatives needed to be found.聽聽聽

The jetpack

The jetpack was first thought to have been conceived more than 100 years ago by Russian Alexander Andreev, but it was not until Bell Aerosystems began developing the 鈥楤ell Rocket Belt鈥 in the 1950s that the technology was seen as a viable mode of flight.聽聽

Much of the early thinking was that jetpacks could be used by the US Army, whereas modern versions of the transportation system are also being marketed towards emergency responders, including police and mountain rescuers.

While ultimately the jetpack industry has not failed, it has been an incredibly long journey that精东影业 never truly gotten off the ground due to cost, danger and the training requirements.

However, there is hope with a handful of companies such as Jetpack Aviation, Frank Zapata精东影业 Flyboard Air, Gravity Industries and Maverick Aviation developing the concept.

Maverick Aviation精东影业 jetpack is of particular interest as its patent pending flight control system provides automated stability, making it easier for a non-pilot to operate without extensive training.

It is quite conceivable that with this type of development the jetpack will finally have its moment in the sun after over a century of development and, if it does, it will certainly have been worth the wait.聽聽

The UK government is planning for Britian to be at the forefront of the electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) revolution that is widely seen as the biggest shakeup of the aviation industry in decades.

To ensure that the UK is not left behind the country精东影业 government is pressing ahead with plans to support and boost development of eVTOL aircraft and the infrastructure needed to support it.聽聽

On March 18, 2024, the UK精东影业 Future of Flight action plan was published, revealing how flying cars and drone technology can be harnessed to create a 拢45 billion ($57 billion) industry by the end of the decade.

Under the plans the UK精东影业 Department for Transport (DfT) says that by 2026 the first piloted flying taxi flight will take place with regular services becoming a way of life by 2028.

By 2027, the DfT says there will be regular drone deliveries across UK skies and demonstrations of autonomous eVTOL aircraft by 2030.

The joint plan formed in collaboration between industry and government鈥痵ets out the strategic direction of the sector over the coming years, 鈥渟triking a balance between innovation, security, safety and cutting emissions鈥.

鈥淐utting-edge battery technology will revolutionize transport as we know it 鈥 this plan will make sure we have the infrastructure and regulation in place to make it a reality. From flying taxis to emergency service drones, we鈥檙e making sure the UK is at the forefront of this dramatic shift in transportation 鈥 improving people精东影业 lives and boosting the economy,鈥 Aviation and Technology Minister, Anthony Browne, said.聽

‘Breaking barriers in the sector’

Included in the Future of Flight action plan are details on allowing drones to fly beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS), how underused smaller aerodromes can form the infrastructure for vertiports, the development of standards to improve security for drones to boost public safety, and engaging communities and local authorities in the technology.

The action plan also includes a vision for drone technology which could be used to deliver packages across the country including to remote islands and rapidly find and repair faults on the railway system.

UK drones have already been effectively used to deliver surgical implants between sites and by the police to tackle violent crime and antisocial behavior.

At the forefront of the plan is the UK精东影业 Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) which will fundamentally set out the path for safe operation of eVTOLs and expanded drone technology.

鈥淎viation stands on the cusp of its next, potentially biggest, revolution since the invention of the jet engine. Drones, eVTOL and other different vehicles have the potential to change transportation options forever. The electric vehicle takeoff and landing (eVTOL) developer Archer Aviation has formed a partnership with the flight service operator Falcon Aviation to develop a vertiport network in Dubai and Abu Dhabi in the UAE to enable flights between the two cities.

Under the partnership, announced on March 11, 2024, Archer and Falcon Aviation will develop vertiport infrastructure in the region that will cut the two-hour car journey between Dubai and Abu Dhabi during peak times to 30 minutes by eVTOL.聽聽

The vertiports will be located at Falcon Heliport at Atlantis, the Palm in Dubai and the Marina Mall heliport in Abu Dhabi精东影业 Corniche.

鈥淎rcher believes it is the first to announce a flying car service on this route between Abu Dhabi and Dubai, one of the world精东影业 most prominent and congested commute corridors,鈥 the company said.

The route will prove particularly popular due to the flight operating almost entirely over water with scenic views of both cities.

鈥淧artnering with established operators such as Falcon Aviation, as well as the capital of the Emirates with the Abu Dhabi Investment Office, has been key to quickly building our presence in the region,鈥 Archer founder and CEO Adam Goldstein said. 鈥淲e look forward to paving the way for the introduction of our Midnight aircraft to the region which will set the stage for the UAE to become a global leader in urban air mobility.鈥澛犅犅

On March 8, 2024, Falcon Aviation launched the upgraded Falcon Tours Heliport Terminal at Atlantis, The Palm, which provides helicopter charter service to locals and tourists between Dubai精东影业 top hotel on the Palm Jumeirah to key destinations, including Abu Dhabi and other cities in the UAE.

As early as next year, the companies plan for this hub to serve Archer精东影业 Midnight aircraft, operated by Falcon Aviation, as a quieter, safer, and more affordable option than helicopters.

Falcon Aviation CEO Captain Ramandeep Oberoi commented: 鈥淔or nearly two decades, Falcon Aviation has been at the forefront of helicopter passenger transport in the UAE. Our partnership with Archer is a leap into the future, as we prepare to offer flying car services together in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, continuing our tradition of world-class transportation solutions.鈥

In 2023, Archer and Falcon signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for the aviation operator to fly scores of Archer精东影业 Midnight flying cars.

This venture is part of Archer’s strategic expansion, with the UAE set to be its first international launch market as soon as next year.

鈥淲e have made rapid progress in the UAE over the past three months since announcing Abu Dhabi and Dubai will be home to our first international Midnight flights as soon as 2025. We鈥檙e proud to be the first to announce plans to operate between Dubai and Abu Dhabi, along with vertiport infrastructure at both ends of the commuter journey,鈥 said Archer Chief Commercial Officer, Nikhil Goel.聽
