Progress has been made in Finland’s investigation into the territorial violation in the sea area off Loviisa on June 10, 2024.

Initial reports indicated a single Russian aircraft was involved, but authorities now suspect a flight group was implicated.

鈥淭he area violation is suspected to have occurred by a four-aircraft division, which included two bomber and two fighter-class aircraft,鈥 the Finnish Border Guard said in a statement.

The incursion occurred in the eastern Gulf of Finland, near Loviisa. It extended 2.5 kilometers (1.5 miles) into Finnish territory and lasted about two minutes.

On the day of the incident, NATO’s Allied Air Command stated that fighter jets belonging to the allies were required to scramble daily over the Baltic Sea because of heightened Russian activities linked to NATO’s Baltic Operations 2024 exercise, which took place in the area from June 7 to 20, 2024.
