The US Air Force has released the first video showcasing its new experimental drone, the XQ-67A, in flight.
The video, shared by the US Air Force Research Laboratory on June 26, 2024, displays the XQ-67A’s inaugural flight at the Gray Butte facility in Palmdale, California.
The flight, which took place on February 28, 2024, is part of the US Air Force’s Off-Board Sensing Station (OBSS) program. Â
Despite its designation, its role will extend beyond mere reconnaissance. It will also provide insights into operational tactics and strategic planning, potentially influencing the future of aerial warfare.
The XQ-67A is an early model of Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA), a USAF concept envisioned to support manned fighters such as the F-22 Raptor and F-35 Lightning II by operating as a team of unmanned wingmen.
This setup provides increased surveillance abilities and improved operational efficiency, without requiring more sophisticated piloted aircraft.
